Abstract

This research discussed refusal strategies used by the characters in the movie The Walking Dead in season 9 featuring 16 episodes. This research aimed to find out type of refusal strategies and the mostly used by the characters in the movie. This research focused on Beebe, Takahashi and Uliss-Weltz’s theory about direct and indirect refusal. Then, the data were analyzed by using qualitative descriptive method. To get the data, it used subtitle itself on the movie by watching all of episodes to find out valid data. The research results show that there are 35 data. There were 18 direct refusal, 13 indirect refusal and four data that used two strategies in one conversation. Therefore, the mostly used is direct refusal, 18 times. Direct refusal used non-performative statement and negative willingness while indirect refusal used as giving reason, explanation, attempt to dissuade interlocutor, statement of regret, avoidance (verbal and non-verbal), unspecific reply, and adjuncts to refusal that is appreciation.

Abstract

This study discusses code switching used by society in Baturaja village. This study aims to determine the types of code switching used by Baturaja society and the factors that determine code switching. The theory used in this research is sociolinguistic theory about code switching, types of code switching, factor of code switching. This research is descriptive qualitative. The data collection instruments consist of observation, recording, transcribing data, interviews, and taking notes. Based on the analysis, it was found that there are two types of code switching used by Baturaja society. the first type is internal code switching, the transition of language from local languages to national languages or vice versa. The second type is external code switching, namely the transfer of languages from national languages to international languages or vice versa. There are several factors that affect code switching: a) speaker, b) listener or interlocutor, c) presence of a third person, d) change in situation, and e) change the topic.

Abstract

Low self-esteem is unworthy feeling because of less attention, love, affection and trust. The impact of low self-esteem could make negative feeling. It is not only to their own life, but also to their surrounding society. Low self-esteem can also be triggered by mistakes that came from parents, family, society and also teacher. The worst effect of low self-esteem in adolescence is on their academic score. They will get bad score because they do not have self confidence to do the assignment or try new experiences. This research purposed to find the low self-esteem, the factor of low self-esteem and the problem solving which is found in the action, gesture and utterance of main characters in the movie The Ron Clark Story. This research used descriptive qualitative research, because the researcher described the data that portray of low self-esteem. The researcher analyzed the data by using psychoanalytic analysis approach from Sigmund Freud. The data was analyzed by describing the low self-esteem in the movie The Ron Clark Story based on Tyson’s theory and the problem solving from Lachmann and Ron Clark’s theory. The researcher found 40 data of low self-esteem that showed in the movie The Ron Clark Story. The dominant factor was the academic challenges without caregiver’s support. The problem solving based on the movie The Ron Clark Story were classified into eight components. The most important component was implementing the class’s rules, followed by giving an appreciation, attention, care, trust, motivation, and help when they get difficulties, making innovation teaching method (especially for the teacher). Cooperation between parents and teachers are very important for the growth of the self-esteem and worthy to get the best potential of children’s life.

Abstract

This research is entitled A Morphological Study of Affixes Used by Major and Minor Characters in the Novel Through the Looking Glass. The objectives of this research are to identify the affixes, to find out the derivation and inflection changes used by characters in the novel Through the Looking Glass and to find out the most dominant affixes. The method of this research is qualitative research. The results of this research are: (1) affixes found at major characters are suffix, prefix, and confix. Afterward, affixes found at minor characters are suffix and prefix, (2) this research found 40 derivations and 85 inflection used by major characters. Besides, this research found six derivations and 17 inflections used by minor characters, and (3) the most dominant affix found at characters are suffix. In total of suffixes used by major character, there were 31 –ing, 10 –ly, 42 –s, 3 –y, 3 –able, 2 –ation, - -d, 15 –ed, 4 –er, 3 –es, 1-est, 2 –ful, 1 –ination, 1 –ish, 3 –ment, 1 –ness, 1 –or, 1 –ous, 1 –t, and 1 -th. Afterward, suffix found at minor characters there were 1 –ance, 4 –ing, 2 –es, 10 –s, 1 –ly, and 1 –ed.

Abstract

The study identifies appropriate Mind Mapping techniques to enhance the Tourism and Business Management Students’ writing ability. This particular research was categorized as action research which consists of some steps namely: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. There were two kinds of data used in this research, qualitative data and quantitative data. The qualitative data were gained from classroom observation and interview and transformed into field notes and interview transcripts by using qualitative data analysis. The implementation of mind mapping as one of techniques successfully improved students’ ability and motivation in learning writing. Mind mapping helped the students in generating and developing their ideas and help them easily in way of collecting information in writing descriptive text about tourism destination.

Abstract

Psychoanalysis is the study of human nature and personality. The purpose of this research is to find the personality of main character and the factor of personality development in the Movie Moana. This research used descriptive qualitative method by Creswell. The analysis was started by explaining the id, ego and super-ego by Sigmund Freud in Calvin S. Hall (1954), identifying with the factor of personality development by Kuravati and Malipatil (2017) and making conclusion. The results of the analysis showed that there are eleven data in this thesis which include the structural personality (id, ego and super-ego). The researcher found some factors that indicated to development of Moana’s personality that are heredity from individual factor and physical environment, family environment, cultural environment and social role from environment. Moana can cross the ocean because she wanted to save people of Motunui from economic down turn. This movie has some messages about the desire of child. Therefore, the researcher suggested the next researcher to do further research. This research also expected to enrich the knowledge of the reader about psychoanalysis.
