Communication is a way to interact with others and also a process of delivering information from the speaker to a hearer. In formal communications, Grice's cooperative principles tend to be recommended to be applied in a certain context. This research is aimed at identifying the use of cooperative principles by middle-aged women when having interaction in the kitchen at the wedding party. The research is conducted by using a qualitative approach in 2 regencies in West Sumatera Indonesia. The data were recorded and also note-taken in the field toward 27 women selected by purposive sampling. These women were around 45-60 years old. The interview was conducted with one Bundo Kandung, three customs leaders, and two intellectual people. The aspects related to context and politeness became the consideration in analyzing the data. The results showed that only two forms among the four maxims at cooperative principle used by the middle-aged women when they had communication in the kitchen at the wedding party. They are 1) the maxim of quantity and 2) the maxim of quality. A number of utterances were violating the maxim in cooperative principles. A number of utterances found are categorized as violations of the maxims if it is based on Grice’s theory. However, that does not apply to the utterances in a group of middle-aged women in Minangkabau during the cooking tradition. It is because there are social and cultural contexts that must be considered when understanding and analyzing these utterances.

Abstract

The occurrence of Javanese-Indonesian-English code-switching among people in cities is common since the cities are the melting pot of heterogeneous people from different linguistic backgrounds. However, it is alarming when code-switching is performed by middle-class society in rural areas in their daily communication. The fact indicates that rural dwellers are relatively homogenous communities. Given the aforementioned context related to code-switching, this study, therefore, aims to reveal its types, to seek its factors, and to get informants’ understanding of the English terms used. This study used a qualitative method by applying interviews and a simple test to get the data. The finding showed that there are three types of code-switching they are inter-sentential, intra-sentential, and extra-sentential but the intra-sentential one was mostly used by the villagers. Regarding to factors triggering the occurrences of code-switching, the rural dwellers reported that their action was influenced by the interluctor, topic, setting, and function when the conversation took place. Even though the villagers used some English terms in daily communication, they confessed that they are still lack of English understanding. The use of English terms was for a practical purpose as the terms were ready to use instead of looking for their Indonesian equivalent. In addition, the English expressions were easily understood by the involved parties in a communication. When this phenomenon goes on and on and is passed to successor generations, it is not impossible that the English language emerges to be the threat of ethnic language in the rural area.

Abstract

English teaching at primary school in Indonesia has experienced some changes in its curriculum, the K13 curriculum is the one that is implemented currently. However, there are some challenges that occur such as the time allocated for the English teaching until its textbook design. Henceforth, English teaching at primary school needs a new move. Another significant issue is related to the design of the curriculum that needs to be adjusted to each school context. In Islamic schools, English teaching finds its own issue, mainly on the cultural aspect—Western culture and ideology. Thus, this present research aims at developing an English workbook that is Muslim-friendly for their students. The method implemented in this study was Research & Development (R&D) with ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model. This research has resulted that there were 5 major topics related to Islamic content developed, such as believing in Allah and Rasulullah, salah, al-Qur’an, noble characters, and the Prophets. Further, this research has resulted from a concept of workbook design, comprising brainstorming, short text, and activities that divided into three categories: cognitive activities (matching and listing), kinesthetic activities (drawing, coloring, and tracing), and the last one is vocabulary-based activity (word search and puzzle). All chapters were designed by considering the implemented curriculum at school partners. The finding of this research has shed light that integrating English and Islamic content can be a way for Islamic schools in Indonesia to build Islamic value to their students as well as to find the school's own character.

Abstract

The way people think and perceive things significantly affects their view of the world and their behavior towards it. To gain a deeper understanding of how they construct and interpret meanings, it is imperative to examine how people build and associate a particular concept. In this study, the researchers delved into people’s perception and understanding of the concept of Kalinaw which is a Cebuano term associated with the English word peace. Responses of 100 conveniently selected participants from a researcher-made questionnaire were listed, tallied, and ranked. Moreover, the researchers utilized Kawakita Jiro (KJ) Analysis as a framework to determine relationships of coded items by sorting and clustering based on their relatedness, similarities, and connection to construct themes and sub-themes. Results show that kalinaw is understood as 1) internal, external, relational, and spiritual manifestations, 2) internal and external state of being, and 3) natural, social, self, spatial, temporal, and situational context. This suggests that people’s concept of kalinaw is relative to the varying areas or contexts and is constructed by the combination of multiple social factors at the individual, social, spiritual, political, environmental, and cultural levels.
