Abstract

In this paper, the literal and contextual symbols of Aji Seduluran, a Javanese magical formula were examined. Twelve versions of the ‘mantra’ –Hindu and Islamic- were analyzed by using discourse analysis. The purpose was to understand the meanings of the symbols and put them into the Javanese social and philosophical contexts. The result indicated that the symbols might be classified into three categories: a) symbols of God and gods; b) symbols of human desires; and c)symbols of social tradition. The symbols were also proven to be universal.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find grammatical and lexical cohesion in Javanese magazine Panjebar Semangat included in the rubrics: Wacan Bocah, Manja, and Cerkak.  The study used content analysis with qualitative approach.  Data of this study were  lingual units such as utterances, sentences, and clauses taken from the rubrics. Data were collected using review and note technique.  Data were analyzed using “agih method”, “bagi unsur langsung” (BUL), substitution and elliptisis technique.  The results shows that grammatical aspect used in Wacana Bocah, Manja, and Cekak rubric in Panjebar Semangat magazine included: reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjungtion. Lexical aspects in the disourses comprise of: repetition, synonym, antonym, collocation, hyponym, and equivalency. Theme that found in Wacan Bocah, Manja, and Cekak rubric is agriculture, education, love, friendship, life style, spirituality, law, and culture.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the form and function apreciation speech act in the interaction in the classroom. This study used descriptive qualitative approach. From the research found a form of apreciation speech act in the learning interaction in the form of declarative sentences, sentence introgatif, and imperative sentences. While the function of speech act earned praise for smoothing function apreciation, smoothes warning, advise, and provide reinforcement.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to improve the ability to write poetry with the technique of flow-assisted media said concrete objects. This study uses a classroom action research. The process of the implementation of this action research refers to the spiral model Kemmis and Tagart with four steps include research, planning, implementation, observation, and reflection consisting of two cycles. Results of the research cycle I the average value of 69.70 students with classical completeness 50%. Results of the second cycle the average value of 78.86 with 95.45% classical completeness. These results are supported by the results of the questionnaire statement of the student's interest first cycle of 81.81% increased in the second cycle to 100%. Based on the above results it can be concluded that the use of media-assisted techniques flowing said concrete objects can improve the quality of the processes and outcomes of learning to write poetry.

Abstract

This study used qualitative design. The subject of the analysis is the thematic aspect of Edgar Allan Poe's short stories. The main characteristic of Poe's short stories is the existence of what is so called a single emotional effect: all incidents in the story, the words and details that create the incident, must point toward this single, effect. Poe is known as the possessor of one most original imagination (Cline, 1969). Eight Poe's short stories were selected as subjects. The primary source of data is the eight short stories by Edgar Allan Poe. The secondary source of data is criticism, Poe's biographical note, ideas, theories, basic principles, opinions. The subject matters of Edgar Allan Poe's selected short stories. The themes of the short stories are (1) madness brings harm, (2) drinking too much alcohol cause catastrophic, (3) revenge exist even in a close friendship, (4) people are helpless when confronted to God's power, (5) love gets rid of the memory, (6) true friend will always be at our side,  (7) God shows power through miracle and disaster; and (8) mental disorder can be hereditary features.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the learning procedure to identify deficiencies text guided discovery methods class VIII SMP Negeri 1 Karangploso. This study used a qualitative descriptive study. The results showed (1) model of guided discovery can be used for learning to identify the drawback text procedures, (2) RPP are designed teacher right good basic competencies, indicators, learning objectives, materials, lesson, source, medium, and apparatus as well as the design of attitude assessment and knowledge appropriate to reach KD, (3) determining the allocation of time on the basis of competence and promissory prota less precise, (4) assessment of the results overlap with text revising skills assessment procedure.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to see kinds of corrective feedbacks used by English lecturer in speaking class. The study used classroom based observation as the design, assigning 30 students and one speaking lecturer in English department University of Bantara (UNIVET) Sukoharjo. Data were collected using observation and interview. The study revealed that teacher’s corrective feedback is one factor that influences the progress of students in learning English. It did not bother the students in building a communication. The evidence showed that that the teacher applied recasts, explicit correction, and clarification requests. Recasts was dominated the type of corrective feedback used by the teacher because it did not make the students confused. Three criteria of effective corrective feedback occurred in correction given by the teacher. He was consistent in treating the errors, gave correction without breaking the flow of the communication, and did not ridicule the students in giving correction.

Abstract

This article describes evaluation results of undergraduate theses written by undergraduate EFL students in Universitas Mulawarman Samarinda.  Evaluation was based on the quality of description of sections in every chapter of the theses.  The presentation of the thesis fulfilled standard presentation of academic report, describing five parts of presentation: introduction, review of related literature, research methodology, findings and discussion, and conclusion and suggestions.  However, the substance of each section in the whole thesis was lack of reasoning. In terms of organization and contents, the theses were colored with trivialities in reasoning, coverage of substance to be described in the sections, and details of description.  The trivialities of description resulted some crucial points were missing.  In addition, language uses and mechanics in the theses were also colored with awkward sentences.

Abstract

This study used qualitative design focusing on the errors made by the second year students of MAN 2 Samarinda. The variable of this study was errors on auxiliary verbs. The variable was measured by using an objective test on auxiliary verbs. The instrument of the study was a test on auxiliary verbs. The data were analyzed the kinds of typical errors which are classified into four, they are: omission, addition, misformation, misordering errors. The components of auxiliary verbs test were: to do (do, does, did), to have (have, has), and modal auxiliary (can, could, will, would, may, and must).  The study discovered that kinds of typical errors on auxiliary verbs are classified into four kinds of typical errors: omission errors, addition errors (double marking and regularization), misformation errors and miscellaneous errors.  The typical errors present on auxiliary verbs are classified into four kinds of typical errors: (1) to do, including: errors in adding “do”, “does” and “did”, misuse in using “do”, “does” and “did”. (2) to have including: errors in adding “have” and “has”, double in marking auxiliary verbs, in this case to be and to have, (3) modal auxiliary including: false in choosing the right modal auxiliary.

Abstract

Innovation in education in Indonesia has been at a short span popular but decreased as other issues pursuing other policies dominantly present. The development of teaching models that do not match with the condition in the real implementation has made teachers confused. In addition, the curriculum contents and syllabuses that the teachers should based upon their teaching are other factors that innovation in education seem never consistently exist. This paper is a critical review on how innovation in education in Indonesia has been improperly developed.
