Abstract

This study conducts a content-based analysis of selected BBC Yoruba English Premier League news headlines on Meta (formerly Facebook) social media platform page. The main thrust of this research is to examine the importance of how (language use) to what (information) in new media communication. Data for this research work were gathered from BBC Yoruba news through their Meta (Facebook) page. Twenty news items were identified for analysis from the data gathered between the period of August 2022 to January 2023 of the 2022/2023 football season of the English premier league through a method of simple random sampling and were analyse within the scope of the communicative model of stylistics theory championed by Lawal (2012) and Goffmann (1974) framing media theory. The study found out that BBC Yorùbá news platform through their news headlines on English Premier League Football Clubs can be classify as a satirist who employed the use of Yorùbá language to inform, educate, entertain and banter Yorùbá English premier league football lovers. The study also revealed that out of all the verbal arts which include Slang, Adapted oral literature, Allusion, Hyperbolic-Personification, Word play and Simile adopted by BBC Yoruba, the usage of Slang is the most prominent from the list of data presented for our analysis. It was also discovered that BBC Yoruba idea of using Yorùbá language to relay English Premier League football related news is an answer to the clarion call by Yorùbá language researchers that a native approach should be adopted by all and sundry for the dissemination of information since according to Lawal (2015, p. 2) who asserts that that 80 percent of Yoruba speakers who do not speak English carry on the business of life and living on their farms and in the markets in their mother-tongue.”

Abstract

Cakes represent a convenient and readily consumable baked product, playing a vital role as a significant food item. They contribute to sustainable economic development, employment opportunities, and poverty alleviation, particularly within the baking sector. In Nigeria, fostering the production of cakes that are both nutrient-dense and affordable involves fortifying them with locally available food materials. This study investigates the nutritional composition and sensory attributes of cakes fortified with plantain, soybeans, and sesame seeds, aiming to contribute to sustainable economic development. To achieve this, six distinct blends of composite flours were developed, combining plantain, soybeans, sesame seeds, and wheat flour at varying ratios: 85:5:5:5, 80:10:5:5, 75:10:10:5, 70:15:5:10, 60:10:15:15, and 55:15:15:15. Cake samples were prepared from these blends, with the control being cakes made solely from 100% wheat flour. The samples were coded as follows: WPSS1 to WPSS7. Nutritional and sensory evaluations were conducted on these samples. The nutritional analysis revealed a statistically significant increase (p>0.05) in the nutritional content of cakes fortified with plantain, soybeans, and sesame seed flour across all composite blends. Interestingly, there was no significant difference (p<0.05) in panelist ratings for texture, flavor, taste, mouthfeel, and overall acceptability between the composite cake samples and the control (100% wheat flour cake). The respondents unanimously agreed that composite flours can serve as a means for sustainable economic development. A composite cake consisting of 15% of each fortificant (plantain, soybean, and sesame seed flour) with 55% wheat flour substitution demonstrated the highest nutritional value. Meanwhile, a cake made with 10% plantain, 5% soybean, 5% sesame seed, and 80% wheat flour received the best mean ratings in sensory evaluation among the samples. These results suggest that incorporating plantain, soybean, and sesame seed in the bakery industry can enhance the nutritional profile of cakes, diversify the use of these crops, reduce post-harvest losses, and mitigate the need for foreign exchange spent on wheat importation in regions where wheat cultivation is not viable due to climatic reasons.

Abstract

The paper sought to assess the influence of corporate communication on organizational performance of commercial banks in Kenya. This was motivated by continued decline in the banking sector in the country, where despite the industry having over 39 licenced banks, only seven banks control over 70% of the market share. Moreover, the focus has mainly been emphasised on financial performance, which is only aligned to one section of stakeholders (shareholders) leaving behind other core stakeholders such as employees, customers, the community and regulators. Using a descriptive cross-sectional approach, the study collected data from 394 respondents drawn from the employees in the 39 commercial banks. A questionnaire was utilized, and the obtained data was analysed using SPSS. The findings revealed that corporate communication had a significant influence on organizational performance of commercial banks in Kenya (β = 0.526; P = 0.000<0.05). This implied that lack of effective communication during corporate change was significantly responsible for the decline in performance of the commercial banks. The study recommends the need for commercial banks through the senior management team that is responsible for corporate change, should integrate corporate communication as an essential tool to drive an holistic organizational performance where all the stakeholders’ needs are met. This will see more sustainable performance that can strengthen the banks’ growth and expansion.
