Abstract

The involvement of the elderly in the activities is low compare to younger adult due to their frailty. This paper presents intrinsic motivations for productive ageing where it highlights the factors that motivate the elderly to participate in the activities. There are thirteen elderly respondents came from the people in the urban Klang Valley. The qualitative data analysis approach is used in this study. There are five intrinsic factors, which, consist of Autonomy, Competence, Relatedness, Curiosity and Altruism that motivate the participation of the elderly in volunteering, caregiving and self-development activities in this study. This research focuses on activities that resulted intrinsic values and not on monetary value like most of past researchers. Intrinsic motivation features are significant features in ICT as the identification of the ICT features is based on motivation to use the ICT.

Abstract

The mobile applications (apps) development has been gaining popularity for the past few years. Some mobile apps have been failing in its popularity because of the unattractive user interface and bad interaction with the apps. This was proven by previous researchers who have stated that the interaction between a user of mobile application and a graphical user interface could lead to some misunderstandings, errors and frustration from an inability to achieve a goal and could lead to failure of the mobile application. Most of the mobile application developers have been facing proper graphical user interface design recently. There is a noticeable lack of studies and research in the area of mobile application design compared to web application user interface (UI) design. Therefore, this research was done to evaluate the different gender on the mobile shopping application using eye-tracking technology. This research had proposed guidelines based on gender for mobile shopping application. These proposed guidelines can be preferred in the designing process of a mobile shopping application as it could provide a better user interaction and would prevent failure in its popularity by providing fast and user friendly interface.

Abstract

Segmentation of blood vessels (BVs) from retinal image is one of the important steps in developing a computer-assisted retinal diagnosis system and has been widely researched especially for implementing automatic BV segmentation methods. This paper proposes an improvement to an existing retinal BV (RBV) segmentation method by combining the trainable B-COSFIRE filter with adaptive thresholding methods. The proposed method can automatically configure its selectivity given a prototype pattern to be detected. Its segmentation performance is comparable to many published methods with the advantage of robustness against noise on retinal background. Instead of using grid search to find the optimal threshold value for a whole dataset, adaptive thresholding (AT) is used to determine the threshold for each retinal image. Two AT methods investigated in this study were ISODATA and Otsu’s method. The proposed method was validated using 40 images from two benchmark datasets for retinal BV segmentation validation, namely DRIVE and STARE. The validation results indicated that the segmentation performance of the proposed unsupervised method is comparable to the original B-COSFIRE method and other published methods, without requiring the availability of ground truth data for new dataset. The Sensitivity and Specificity values achieved for DRIVE and STARE are 0.7818, 0.9688, 0.7957 and 0.9648, respectively.

Abstract

Cochlear implant (CI) listeners encounter difficulties in communicating with other persons in noisy listening environments. However, most CI research has been carried out using the English language. In this study, single-channel speech enhancement (SE) strategies as a pre-processing approach for the CI system were investigated in terms of Thai speech intelligibility improvement. Two SE algorithms, namely multi-band spectral subtraction (MBSS) and Weiner filter (WF) algorithms, were evaluated. Speech signals consisting of monosyllabic and bisyllabic Thai words were degraded by speech-shaped noise and babble noise at SNR levels of 0, 5, and 10 dB. Then the noisy words were enhanced using SE algorithms. The enhanced words were fed into the CI system to synthesize vocoded speech. The vocoded speech was presented to twenty normal-hearing listeners. The results indicated that speech intelligibility was marginally improved by the MBSS algorithm and significantly improved by the WF algorithm in some conditions. The enhanced bisyllabic words showed a noticeably higher intelligibility improvement than the enhanced monosyllabic words in all conditions, particularly in speech-shaped noise. Such outcomes may be beneficial to Thai-speaking CI listeners.

Abstract

The paper presents the snake species identification by using natural language processing. It aims to help medical professionals in predicting the snake species for snake-bite treatments based on the patient’s description of the snake. The decision in suitable anti-venom critically depends on the type of snake species. Wrong anti-venom may result in severe morbidity and mortality. This research investigates the human perception and the selection of words in describing a snake based on their visual view. The descriptions were presented in unstructured text, and the NLP processing involves pre-processing, feature extraction and classification. Four machine learning algorithms (naïve Bayes, k-Nearest Neighbour, Support Vector Machine, and Decision Trees J48) were used during training and classification. Our results show that J48 algorithm obtained the highest classification accuracy of 71.6% correct prediction for the NLP-Snake data set with high precision and recall.

Abstract

The conjugancy coefficient is the very basis of a diversity of the conjugate gradient methods. In this research, we derivation a new formula of conjugate gradient methods based on the quadratic model. Our arithmetical findings have revealed that, our new method has the most excellent performance contrast to the other standard CG methods. Also give proof viewing that this method converges globally.

Abstract

Voltage-source converter (VSC) topology is widely used for grid interfacing of distributed generation (DG) systems such as the photovoltaic system (PV). Since the operation of the VSC is essential to ensure quality of active and reactive power injected to the grid, a control approach is needed to deal with the uncertainties in the grid such as faults. This paper presents a non-linear controller design for a three-phase voltage source converter (VSC). The dynamic variables adopted for the VSC are the instantaneous real and reactive power components. The control approach that interface the VSC between the PV system and the grid are subjected to the current-voltage based. PV system injects active power to the grid and local load while utility grid monitors the power compensation of load reactive power. The proposed non-linear control strategy is implemented for the VSC to ensure fast error tracking and finite convergence time. The adaptive nature of the proposed non-linear control provides more robustness, less sluggish fault recovery compared to conventional PI control. The comprehensive numerical model is demonstrated in MATLAB script environment with power system disturbances such as faults in the grid. The simulation of proposed system is being carried out in MATLAB/SIMULINK environment to validate the control scheme. The proposed control system regulates the VSC ac side real and reactive power component and the dc side voltage.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to study and identify various threshold values for two prevalently used edge detection techniques, which are Sobel and Canny. The purpose is to determine which value gives an accurate result for identifying a leukemic cell. Moreover, evaluating suitability of edge detectors is also essential as feature extraction of cell depends greatly on image segmentation (edge detection). Firstly, an image of M7 subtype of Acute Myelocytic Leukemia (AML) is selected due to its diagnosing which were found lacking. Next, apply noise filters for the best of image quality. Thus by comparing image with no filter, median and average filters, useful information can be acquired. Each edge detectors is fixed with threshold value of 0-0.5 but for Cann edge detection the value can increase until 0.9. From the research, it is found that Canny edge with no filter and a threshold value of 0.7 gives a clearer image with less noise reduction.

Abstract

This paper presents a numerical analysis of the specific absorption rate in SAM phantom exposed to electromagnetic field. A two set dipole antenna operating with 1800MHz and 2600MHz were placed parallel to the z-axis and rotated in clockwise from 0o (vertical) to 180o in steps of 30o to investigate the effect of frequency and polarization. The maximum average of 1gram and 10gram of tissue have been presented to show the effect of SAR in SAM phantom model. A comparison of the mass average SAR in head shows the 1g of SAR at 2600MHz is double to 1800MHz frequency. While for 10g of SAR, slightly different for both 1800MHz and 2600MHz.

Abstract

This paper present the influence of pole number on the characteristics of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). This study is devoted to construct three different motors with varying pole numbers and investigating its effect on the characteristics of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). It is a study on an influence of pole numbers on electromagnetic and thermal characteristics of the PMSMs all while maintaining the same motor dimensions, parameters and slot number. The study is conducted to analyse the best slot-pole combination for a given dimension to determine if pole numbers have a role in the motor performance. The analysis for these permanent magnet motors is done via finite element analysis (FEA) in which JMAG Designer software is used. The software is used to analyse the motor performance in terms of cogging torque, speed, power, iron loss, copper loss as well as the efficiency of the motor itself. All three motors were simulated in no load and load condition.
