Abstract

In this paper, we present a multimodal biometric recognition system that combines fingerprint, fingervein and face images based on cascade advanced and decision level fusion. First, in fingerprint recognition system, the images are enhanced using gabor filter, binarized and passed to thinning method. Then, the minutiae points are extracted to identify that an individual is genuine or impostor. In fingervein recognition system, image processing is required using Linear Regression Line, Canny and local histogram equalization technique to improve better the quality of images. Next, the features are obtained using Histogram of Oriented Gradient (HOG). Moreover, the Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and the Local Binary Pattern (LBP) are applied to detect and extract the features of the face images, respectively. In addition, we proposed three different modes in our work. At the first, the person is identified when the recognition system of one single biometric modality is matched. At the second, the fusion is achieved at cascade decision level method based on AND rule when the recognition system of both biometric traits is validated. At the last mode, the fusion is accomplished at decision level method based on AND rule using three types of biometric. The simulation results have demonstrated that the proposed fusion algorithm increases the accuracy to 99,43% than the other system based on unimodal or bimodal characteristics.

Abstract

Plasmodium parasite is identified to confirm malaria disease.  Paramedics need to observe the presence of this parasite prepared on thick and thin blood films under microscope.  However, false identification still occurs which is caused by human factor during the examination.  Thus, malaria identification based on digital image processing has been widely developed to overcome the error possibility.  This paper proposes a scheme to identify and classify the stages of Plasmodium vivax parasite on digital microscopic image of thin blood films based on feature analysis.  Shape and texture features are extracted from segmented parasite objects.   Feature selection based on wrapper method is then conducted to obtain relevant features which may contribute in improving the classification result.  The classification process is conducted based on Naïve Bayes classifier.  The performance of proposed method is evaluated using 73 digital microscopic images of P.vivax parasite on thin blood films comprising of 29 trophozoites, 10 schizonts and 34 gametocytes stages.  By using six selected features including perimeter, dispersion, mean of intensity, ASM, contrast GLCM and entropy GLCM, the proposed scheme achieves the best classification rate with the accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of 97.29%, 97.30% and 97.30%, respectively.  This indicates that the proposed scheme has a potential to be implemented in the development of a computerised aided malaria diagnosis system for assisting the paramedics.

Abstract

This paper proposes an auto-focus Instruction function. The function is derived from Ostu segmentation. It uses class variance of segmentation result to instruct auto-focus process. Compare with the exist functions, class variance function need a small calculation mount. It is immunity to jam coming from camera and other inspection. It responses in a wide object distance range. And the value changes in a large range. All this features make this function is most flexible for microscope real-time auto-focus process. Abstract

A superheater is a vital part of the steam generation process in the boiler-turbine system. Reliable control of temperature in the superheated steam temperature system is essential to guarantee efficiency and high load-following capability in the operation of coal-fired Thermal power plant. The PI and PID controllers are extensively used in cascade control of secondary superheated steam temperature process.The design and implementation of a Model Predictive Control (MPC) strategy for the superheated steam temperature regulation in a thermal power plant is presented. A FOPTD model  is derived from  the dynamic model of the superheater. This model is required by the MPC algorithm to calculate the future control inputs. A new MPC controller is designed and its performance is tested through simulation studies. Compared with the superheater steam temperature control using a conventional PID controller, the steam temperature controlled by the MPC controller is found to be more stable. The stable steam temperature leads to energy saving and efficient plant operation, as verified by the simulation results.

Abstract

A non-dominated sorting Harris’s hawk multi-objective optimizer (NDSHHMO) algorithm is presented in this paper. The algorithm is able to improve the population diversity, convergence of non-dominated solutions toward the Pareto front, and prevent the population from trapping into local optimal. This was achieved by integrating fast non-dominated sorting with the original Harris’s hawk multi-objective optimizer (HHMO).  Non-dominated sorting divides the objective space into levels based on fitness values and then selects non-dominated solutions to produce the next generation of hawks. A set of well-known multi-objective optimization problems has been used to evaluate the performance of the proposed NDSHHMO algorithm. The results of the NDSHHMO algorithm were verified against the results of an HHMO algorithm. Experimental results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed NDSHHMO algorithm in terms of enhancing the ability of convergence toward the Pareto front and significantly improve the search ability of the HHMO.

Abstract

The objective of the proposal is to address the demand on data over the services provided by telecommunication industries during major events held in Malaysia especially in stadiums. Previously, during most of the events, users will experience bad services in both data and voice transactions. It is not only slow or delayed but almost failed to access the network to connect them to the world. Besides a few solutions that have been introduced such as IBC (In-Building Coverage) and Small Cells, this proposed solution Multibeam RF Antenna, is one of them to address the demand. Abstract

Educational data mining has gained tremendous interest from researchers across the globe. Using data mining techniques in the field of education several significant findings have been made. Accurate academic performance estimation has been a challenging task due to the variety of students’ attributes involved. In this study we have developed a novel framework to estimate the academic performance of students. Our proposed model outperformed existing models of students’ academic performance determination and gives a new direction to academic performance estimation. The proposed model can help not only to reduce the number of academic failures but also help to comprehend the factors contributing to a students’ academic performance (poor, average or outstanding). Some of the techniques used were conversion of categorical attributes into dummy variables, instance segregation, classification using an optimised and improved differential evolutionary algorithm.

Abstract

Novel intelligent technique is a combination of fuzzy and neural network techniques that can be used to classify faults in electric power system protection. There have two problems in the protection system, which are: undesired tripping and fail to operate. Loss of power supply to relays and circuit breakers or failure in protective devices may cause failures in protection system. Construction of neural networks to explore fact to identify fault component is from control center. The objective of this paper is to develop novel concept for classification failures protection system are using Fuzzy Neural Network technique. Methodology consists of Neural Network and Fuzzy. The Neural network is also conscientious for estimating degree of membership in system components from corresponding area in classification of disorders. The input variables of neural network formed of binary numbers. Value of 1 indicates if fault occurs and value of 0 indicates no-fault occurs. Fuzzy relations will represent by fuzzy. These Fuzzy relations can be represented by fuzzy diagram consisting of three sets of node that would be considered to represent components, relays and circuit breakers.

Abstract

Cooperative communication has been recently proposed in wireless communication systems for exploring the inherent spatial diversity in relay channels. In this work, we investigate the system performance of the energy harvesting full-duplex (FD) decode-and-forward (DF) hybrid time switching-power splitting relaying TSR-PSR (TPSR) protocol relaying network. In the selection scheme, the best user selection protocol is proposed and investigated. Mainly we derive the closed-form expression for the outage probability, system throughput and the symbol error rate (SER) of the system. Numerical results are also presented by the Monte Carlo simulation to validate the theoretical analysis in connection with the all possible parameters in the comparison between TSPR, TSR and PSR cases. The research results show that TPSR case is better than the others in term of outage probability and SER.

Abstract

Study the impacts of lightning-induced transient overvoltage on a hybrid PV-Wind system has been addressed in this work. Overvoltage that is generated due to lightning stroke travels along the system where it can be very harmful to the expensive equipment of the system such as PV models, inverters, charge controllers, batteries, transformers, generator. etc. The simulation model of a system has been completed by using PSCAD/EMTDC software. The system comprises of 2 MW PV farm, battery system, 2.1 MW wind farm and loads which are all connected to the common AC bus and then to the utility grid through an interfacing transformer. Lightning current is generated by using the double exponential function, From the simulation results, when the lightning current is injected to the AC and DC sides of PV system, the transient current and voltage have appeared at different points of the hybrid system. The results were obtained for 8/20 μs and 10/350 μs standards lightning waveforms with current magnitude of 100 kA.
