Abstract

This study  was designed   to determine the ability  of six  commercial exterior finishes  (2 clear coats  and 4 opaque  coats)  in  protecting wood from   dimensional changes.   Two wood species,  jabon (Anthocephalus cadamba Miq.) and mangium (Acacia mangium Willd.)  were used in this study.   Samples were  seasoned to air-dry condition  (moisture content of 15-17%)and  then  divided into groups on the basis of treatments and groin orientation (radial and tangential).  Application of each exterior finish  was undertaken according to procedures  suggested by the finish  manufacturer. The  effectiveness of treatments to dimensionally  stabilize wood was determined by measurements of wood swelling within 72-hours  immersion and calculation of a.:d-.swelling efficiency (ASE). Results of observations made to this stage showed that the effect  of finishing on wood dimensional stability varied according  to wood species, grain orientation and type of finish  coat. Finishing had a greater dimensional stabilizing effect  on Jabon than mangium.  Reduction of swelling due to finishing was greater in tangential compared to radial boards.  The use of clear coats significantly gave less protection on wood stability than that of opaque coats.  Anti-swelling efficiency of all treatments markedly decreased with increasing period of  immersion.

Abstract

Oyster  mushroom was cultivated on sawdust media  of  damar (Agathis  sp), durian (Durio  zibethinus Murr.),  teak. (Tectona  grandis  L.f),  jeungjing (Albizia  falcataria  (L.)   Fosb.),   rubber  (Hevea  brasiliensis Muell.  Arg.), coconut  (Cocos nucifera L.),  kemang  (Mangifera  caesia  Jack),   manii (Maesopsis eminii Engl.),   meranti  merah  (Shorea  johorensis Foxw.), nangka  (Artocarpus  integra  Merr.),   pulai  (Alstonia   scholaris R.Br.),    sehiye  (Sterculia macrophylla Vent.),   shiega  (Celtis latifolia Planch.),   sihara (Ganophyllum falcatum BL.)   and pine  (Pinus  merkusii Jung  et  De  Vr.). The  composition   of  the media  was  77,5  % sawdust   mixed   with  20  % rice  bran,   0,5 % lime,  0,5 % trisuperhosphate   and 1,5 % gypsum.  Each media  was mixed   with  distilled   water 125  - 150 % per dry  weight  of  media.  The  media  was  cooled  after  autoclave sterilization    before being  inoculated   with  pure  culture   of  the  mushroom. The  mature   mushroom    was harvested   daily after  the growth  of  the  fruiting  body.  Biological  Efficiency (BE) was calculated  based on the yield  of fresh  mushroom   in proportion  with  the  dry  weight  of  material  used  as media.The  higher BE  was obtained  from  rubber wood   sawdust   media  (86.15  %),  nangka (66.26 %),  kemang  (63,85%) and pulai  (63.52).  The  lowest  BE  was obtained  from damar  (28.22 %).

Abstract

Studi dekomposisi daun dan ranting mangium (Acacia mangium) dan ekaliptus (Eucalyptus sp.) yang disterilkan, menggunakan delapan isolat fungi pelapuk yaitu HHBI-204 (Schizophyllum commune), HHBI-302, HHBI-341, HHBI-346-350, dan diinkubasikan selama 30 hari secara laboratoris. Tingkat degradasi contoh uji dievaluasi berdasarkan perubahan kandungan karbon organik, nitrogen total, kadar unsur hara, dan kapasitas tukar kation (KTK). Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa inokulasi fungi berpengaruh terhadap kandungan kimia contoh uji tersebut. Nisbah C/N berkisar antara 24,3-33,4 (untuk mangium) dan 19,5-27,6 (untuk ekaliptus). Nisbah C/N yang rendah dijumpai pada mangium yang diinokulasi HHBI-341, HHBI-346 dan HHBI-350 yaitu masing-masing 25,9; 25,0 dan 24,3; dan pada ekaliptus yang diinokulasi HHBI-302, HHBI-341, HHBI-346 dan HHBI-350 berturutturut yaitu 20,1; 19,8; 19,5 dan 20,9. Pada mangium, kandungan unsur hara berkisar antara: N 0,52-0,86%; P 0,32-0,38% dan K 0,16- 0,21%. Pada ekaliptus, kandungan unsurnya berkisar antara: N 0,66-0,94%; P 0,32-0,38% dan kadar K 0,2-0,30%. Nilai KTK contoh uji masing-masing adalah 23,48 - 28,71 me/100 g (mangium) dan 25,73 - 29,11 me/100 g (ekaliptus).

Abstract

Machining  properties   of  16  wood  species  from   West Kalimantan   and  West Java has been  identified   using the  modified  ASTM   D-1666  which  was described  in the  Forest  Products   Research  Institute  Report   No.  160  (1982).   The  samples (25 pieces/species)    were dried  to  equilibrium   moisture   content   condition   (15  to  18% of MC).  The  machining  properties tested  are planing,  shaping,   boring,  turning  and  sanding.Seven  species  that  have  good   to  very  good  machining  properties   are  kenari  I, kenari II,  kemayau,   belangeran,  ki sampang,  ki  endog  and  surian  bawang.   The  best  machining properties,   however,   were  found   on johar,  gadog and putat. Abstract

Dewasa ini terdapat kesenjangan antara produksi kayu dari hutan alam produksi dengan konsumsinya untuk industri pengolahan kayu termasuk industri pulp/kertas. Atas dasar itu, Departemen Kehutanan menerapkan kebijakan soft landing yaitu mengurangi peran hutan alam produksi sebagai pemasok kayu untuk industri pulp/kertas, dan secara berangsur-angsur diganti peranannya oleh hutan tanaman industri (HTI) kayu pulp antara lain mencakup jenis Acacia mangium dan Eucalyptus spp. Dalam memanfaatkan kayu HTI, perlu dicermati aspek-aspek seperti faktor eksploitasi, karakteristik dasar kayu, sifat pengolahan pulp, dan mutu hasil lembaran pulp/kertas yang baik dan dapat memuaskan konsumen. Terkait dengan uraian tersebut, telah dilakukan penelitian Penentuan Daur Optimal Kayu HTI jenis eukaliptus (Eucalyptus hybrid) untuk Bahan Baku Pulp Ditinjau dari Sifat Dasar Kayu, Sifat Pengolahan Pulp Sulfat, dan Kualitas Lembaran Pulp/Kertas. Contoh kayu jenis tersebut diambil dari Sumatera Utara dengan variasi umur 4, 5, 6, dan 10 tahun. Hasil menunjukkan daur teknis optimum jenis eukaliptus dengan memperhitungkan aspek krakateristik, sifat, dan kualitas tersebut, dicapai pada umur 7.01 tahun. Besarnya faktor eksploitasi pada umur tersebut tidak diketahui. Akan tetapi pada umur 6 tahun, faktor tersebut sekitar 95.5 - 97.0%, maka masih diperlukan penelitian lebih lanjut penetapan faktor eksploitasi pohon pada umur 7.01 tahun. Diharapkan hasil penelitian ini bermanfaat bagi pemerintah sebagai penentu kebijakan maupun pengusaha HTI sebagai pelaksana di lapangan.

Abstract

The penetration of wood preservative of ten wood species from Lampung was studied. The observation was conducted after the timber had been preserved by diffusion method. The BFCA 30% and wood samples of 6 cm by 10 cm by 200 cm were used in this experiment. The results showed that wood species has significant effect on penetration, while duration of diffusion storage period has the same effect only on keruing, damar asam, balam and cengal banglai. Eight weeks of storage was better than 4 weeks on those timber, but not for the other species. According to IUFRO classification, pulai kayu tabu and bintangur can be classified as permeable, while the others were classified as moderate.

Abstract

Abstract

 The  effect of irradiation level i.e.  two megarad (20 KGy), four  megarad (40 KGy) and six megarad (60  KGy) pre impregnated with polyester styrene was investigated on  rubber wood  (Hevea brasiliensis Muell.  Arg.). The samples were obtained from  locally cultivated rubber trees at  Jasinga subdistrict, Bogor, West Java. The treated wood properties tested include airdry density, hardness, compression parallel to the grain, compression perpendicular to the grain and impact bending strength, using the method described in ASTM D 143-52 (Anom., 1976).  The swelling and shrinkage test specimen was 5.0 cm x 5.0 cm x 1.5 cm block and of 5.0 cm x 5.0 cm x 3.5 cm for water absorption determination.The test results revealed that irradiation treatment were highly significantly increase density, hardness, compression parallel to the grain and compression perpendicular to the grain, but  decrease swelling, shrinkage and  water absorption. Meanwhile, shrinkage and swelling on radial direction, and impact bending strength showed non-significant difference (P  ≥ 0.05).It is also concluded that irradiation of two megarad (20 KGy) increase the density, hardness, compression parallel to the grainand compression perpendicular to the grain by one and half  fold compared to untreated specimens. On the other hand, water absorption, swelling and shrinkage for tangential direction decrease to about the same magnitude when treated with the same level of irradiation compared to untreated ones.Impact bending strength showed non-significant difference for all treatment levels.

Abstract

Tujuh jenis  kayu dalam keadaan kering udara berukuran 5 x 5 x 50 cm, diawetkan dengan proses rendaman dingin menggunakan bahan pengawet lmpralit 16 SP dan  lmpralit CKB. Lama rendaman dingin yang digunakan 3 dan 5 hari dengan  konsentrasi  larutan 5 % dan 10 %. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dari tujuh jenis kayu yang diieliti, dua jenis, yaitu sengon  dan tusam, dapat diawetkan bahan pengawet  Impralit 16 SP dengan kondisi yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini, sedangkan Lima jenis kayu lainnya, yaitu damar, gmelina, rengas, sumpung dan suren, tidak ada yang mencapai persyaratan yang ditentukan. Dengan bahan pengawet  Impralit CKB hanya  berhasil baik pada satu jenis  kayu, yaitu pada kayu tusam. Bahan pengawet lmpralit 16 SP dengan konsentrasi 10 % dan lama perendaman masing-masing 5 hari dan 3 hari hanya dapat digunakan mengawetkan kayu sengon dan tusam yang dipasang di bawah atap tanpa berhubungan dengan tanah. Kayu tusam yang digunakan di bawah atap dan di udara terbuka tanpa berhubungan dengan tanah dapat diawetkan bahan pengawet lmpralit CKB masing-masing dengan konsentrasi 5 %  dan 10 %  selama 5 hari dan 3 hari.

Abstract

This paper deals with the results of study on implementing reduced impact logging (RIL) as well as conventional logging (CL), which was carried out in natural production forest under the concession operation of a forest company in Riau in 2001. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of reduced impact logging on possible improvement or securing the stand damage, level of ground exposure, top soil displacement, and cost related skidding productivity.The data collected in this regard were the number of felled trees (stands), number of trees with the diameter of 20 cm or greater, number of damaged trees and poles, ground exposure, top soil displacement, skidding cost, and skidding productivity. The data as such consisted of two main categories, i. e. the one and the other one that resulted consecutively from the implementation of RIL and CL systems. The two-category data were analyzed with respect to their possible differences using at-test.Results of study revealed that the implementation of RIL system brought out more convenient impacts in comparison to the CL, as follows: (1) Level of tree (stand) damage would decrease by about 5.4% (highly significant); (2) Ground exposure decreased by around 9 percent (significant); (3) the decrease in top soil displacement by about 2.4 mm (highly significant); (4) Skidding cost decreased by some Rp 398.98 per m3. With respect to skidding productivity using RIL (compared to CL), there was apparently an increase by about 2.6 m3 per hour. However, such an increase was not significantly different.Based on environmental, technical and economical considerations, the RIL system for future logging operation can be recommended in preference to the CL.
