Abstract

Dome kiln of S-93 model with 1.40 m3 capacity was built for charcoal production of rubber wood (Hevea brasilliensis). Two clones of rubber wood used as raw materials were AVROS 2037 and GT-Twhich were 15 and 25 years old, respectively.Charcoal yield, conversion efficiency from wood 10 charcoal, rate of production and quality between AVROS and GT-T were not significant. the percentage of yield was 26.9 % , efficiency was 39.2 % and rate of production was 1.6 kg/hour. the quality of charcoal showed that volatile melter content was 17.43 %, fixed carbon 78.64 %, ash content 3.92 % and catoriffic value 6582 kcal/kg.

Abstract

An  investigation on the effectiveness of forest  roads was conducted at PT  Siak  Raya  Timber in Riau in 1989.  The objective is to find  out  the  information on construction and  uses of forest roads. The length of main and  branch roads and target and actual productions   during the latest six years (from1983/1984  to 198811989)  were collected.  The investigation  results reveal that: 1.The  length  of  forest   roads  built  annually   by  PT  Siak  Raya  Timber  ranged from  16  km  (consisting  of  10 km  main and  6 km branch  roads)  to 85 km  (consisting  of 65 km  main and 20 km branch roads), with an average of 21.66 km (consisting of 11.68 km  main and 20 km branch roads). 2.The annual  felling area of PT Siak Raya Timber was 2,600 ha. The road densities  ranged from  6.16 m/ha  to 32.69  m/ha with  an  average of 21.66 m/ha. The road density is some what high compared  to that stated  in the Forest Agreement. 3.The actual production of  logs at PT Siak Raya Timber ranged from  21,225.65 m3/year  to 47,199.04 m3/year  with an average of 34,417.03 m3/year. 4.The  differencf  between target and actual production averages was relatively large i.e.  75,500 m3/year compared to 34,417.03 m3/year. The effectiveness of forest roads  ranged  from 268.67m3/km-year to 2,305.86 m3/km-year with  an average of 1,010 m3/km-year.

Abstract

Percobaan pembuatan pulp secara kimia-termomekanik (CTMP) dalam skala laboratorium telah dilakukan dengan menggunakan kayu mangium untuk tujuan kertas koran. Percobaan ini dilakukan untuk modifikasi pembuatan pulp secara termo-mekanik (TMP). Pemberian bahan kimia untuk tujuan pelunakan serpih dilakukan sebelum pemisahan serat pada suhu kamar dengan tekanan atmosflr. Bahan kimia yang digunakan adalah larutan NaOH sebanyak 0, 4 dan 8%. Serpih yang telah lunak diberi perlakuan uap pada suhu 140ºC dengan waktu bervariasi, yaitu 10, 15 dan 20 menit. Pemisahan serat dilaksanakan pada tekanan 2,2 Bar. Pemutihan pulp menggunakan hidrogen peroksida dalam dua tahap. Tahap pertama menggunakan konsentrasi peroksida 2% dan tairap kedua 4%. Pulp putih dijadikan lembaran setelah digiling sampai mencapai derajat kehalusan serat 200-300 ml CSF.Pelunakan serpih dengan alkali sebanyak 4% pada waktu kukus selama 10 menit memberikan rendemen pulp belum putih lebih tinggi daripada penggunaan alkali 0% atau disebut juga proses TMP konvensional walaupun waktu kukusnya lebih panjang (20 menit). Kondisi pengolahan tersebut juga menghasilkan serat yang hancur lebih sedikit dibandingkan dengan proses TMP. Sifat pulp CTMP dari kayu mangium dengan menggunakan alkali 4% dan waktu kukus 15 menit dapat memenuhi syarat Standar Nasional Indonesia (SNI) untuk kertas koran, kecuali kekuatan sobeknya. Dibandingkan dengan pulp TMP, maka pulp CTMP dari kayu mangium dapat memberikan sifat keteguhan yang memadai, bagian serat yang hancur lebih sedikit serta kebutuhan energi lebih rendah.

Abstract

This study was intended to investigate the relation between basic properties and drying properties of five priority wood species, i.e. pulai kongo (Alstonia congensis Engl.), kibawang (Azadirachta excelsa Jack.), salamander (Grevillea robusta A.Gunn), mahoni (Swietenia macrophy/la King), and suren (foona sureni Merr.)from West Java. The air drying methods used were 29 - 35°C temperatures and high temperature drying (JOrJ'C). The basic properties included basic density, shrinkage, modulus of rupture (MOR), compression parallel to grain (Cl/), wood strength and anatomical structures. The drying properties included drying duration and wood quality. The maximum-minimum temperature and humidityfor each species were based on defects resulted in high temperature drying.The results showed that the drying properties were significantly affected by basic density and wood anatomical structure. Following the drying qualities and basic properties, the optimal drying schedules for pulai kongo and mahoni wood at 70 - 95°C temperature and 29 - 75% humidity; kibawang wood at 65 - 88°C temperature and 29 - 78% humidity; suren wood at 65 - 9rJ'C temperature and 29 - 78% humidity; and salamander wood at 58 - 83°C temperature and 27 - 82% humidity. These drying schedules, however, still need further trial prior to their implementation in the factory-scale operation. Based on basic density, strength class, and decorative value, kibawang, salamander, mahoni and suren wood were suitable forfancy furniture.

Abstract

Tulisan ini menyajikan hasil penelitian tentang kinerja pengeluaran kayu tusam dengan sepeda motor yang dimodifikasi dari hutan ke tempat pengumpulan kayu sementara (TPn). Tujuan penelitian adalah mengetahui produktivitas kerja, volume permukaan tanah lantai hutan yang tergeser dan biaya oprasi. Lokasi penelitian di BKPH Sagaranten, KPH Sukabumi Perum Perhutani Unit III Jawa Barat. Sepeda motor yang digunakan untuk mengangkut dolok adalah Yamaha Firz 100 cc dan Suzuki Bravo 110 cc. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa produktivitas Yamaha dan Suzuki masing masing adalah 1,02 m3/jam hm dan 1,12 m3/jam hm. Volume tanah lantai hutan yang tergeser 0,1 m3/m2. Biaya operasi motor Yamaha dan Suzuki berturut-turut adalah Rp 9.850,- /m3hm dan Rp 8.971,-/m3hm.

Abstract

The  effect  of  cooking  condition  on  the  quality  of rattan  is presented in  this article.  Round     fresh   manau   rattan  samples, each  of 100 cm in length and 3 cm in diameter were 80 stems  in all.The samples  were devided  into  4 groups before cooking. Each  group was cooked  with four different oil mixtures and four levels of cooking time.The results  reveal  that  the composition  of cooking  oils has a significant   effect  on  the  cane  color and  compressive strength  parallel to grain. but has no effect  on shear strength  of the rattan.The  mixtures  containing  coconut oil tends to reduce the  rate  of rattan  skin  color change  during  cooking.  Also,  such composition produced  better rattan skin  color in comparison with those treated with others.

Abstract

This paper deals with a study on the properties, quality and uses of charcoal made from pine litter and bark. The study was intended to see the possibility of using pine litter and bark for compost, mixture of compost charcoal manufacturing, and growing media. The abundance of pine litter and bark left on the forest floor initiated this study. Only some of the pine bark was used for fuel.The results revealed that the charcoal made from pine litter and bark showed the following properties: moisture content at 5.23 - 7.81 percent ; ash content 1.88 - 13. 76 percent ; volatile matter 26.19- 32.60 percent; fixed carbon 53.63 - 71.93 percent, and colorivic value 7192 cal/gr. The macro-nutrient content of pine bark was categorized as moderate for N-total, P205, K20 and water-based pH, as high for C organic and C/N ratio, and as low for CaO and MgO. The quality of compost and compost charcoal made from pine litter and bark met the related standard, among others. Pat 1.12- 1.24 percent; K 1.47- 1,62 percent ; Mg 0.67- 1.05 percent; moisture content 55.81 - 56.21 percent; pH 6.8- 7.2 and C/N ratio 18.89- 20.10.

Abstract

This paper deals with reseach results on bamboo preservation using boucherie method. Two bamboo species,  namely andong (Gigantocloa verticillta Munro) and tali  (Gigantochloa apus Kurtz) were treated freshly using Borax (Na2B4O7. IOH2O)  solution with strenght solution of 5% as preservative. One of butt of the 8 length bamboo was immersed 10 cm in borax solution for 2. 4. 6, 8.  and  10  days and  the penetration of preservative were observed. The results showed  that  the  penetration  of  preservative  in  andong  bamboo for 2. 5, 6,  8,  and 10 consecutively  were 131,40 cm, 304,92 cm, 308.42 cm, 469,88  and 315,28 cm, while  in tali, bamboo  were 68,30 cm,  116.83   cm, 141,88 cm  and 128,17 cm,  respectively.  Maximum pnetration of preservative was achived in 8 days immersion for andong and 6 days tali.

Abstract

The result of oleoresin from Cassia vera bark by percolation process is presented in this report. The analyses comprise of the determination of oleoresin yield, essential oil and cinnamic aldehyde. The determination based on oven dry weight revealed that oleoresin yield vary from  6.27- 7.48 percent; essential oil content from 8.10-9.92 percent and cinnamic aldehyde content from 39.53-41.59 percent. The optimum yield of oleoresin was produced at temperature of 25°C and with two hours time of percolation process. Temperature and time of percolation process indicated a non significant effect to the cinnamic aldehyde yield.

Abstract

 An investigation   on   working   conditions   of  three  plywood  factories  in  South   Sumatra   was conducted in 1987; The  objective is to find  out  the  workers judgement   about   their  working  conditions in  terms  of  conveniences.The   total  of  265   respondents   from  plywood  factories employed  in  the  processing  steps  of  wood  preparation, peeling,  reeling, unreeling, veneer  drying, veneer  preparation,   gluing,  pressing, finishing, quality  control, packaging, workshops and laboratories were interviewed.The  results showed that  in  each processing  step, more  than  60%  respondents  felt their  working space conditions were  far  from being convenient   due  to  inappropriate   air circulation, dust, bad  smell noise, and  vibration.
