Abstract

This paper describes the concept of sacred sound in Hinduism as a way for the Hindu to approach and to know the Christian God. Different from Christians who are known as the people of the book, Hindu people are known as the people of the sound. The vocalic syllable Om or Aum and the repeating/chanting of the sacred sound in Hindu worship give a unique room to a new and different way of knowing God. God is no longer perceivable as the powerful figure in the book but as consciousness. The word “consciousness” in this paper refers to the ability of believers to be mindful and responsive to God. This paper will also describe the concept of sonic theology as a different way to perceive God in Hinduism and relate it to the practice of Yoga that is widely practiced in the modern world today.

Abstract

This article discusses the importance of being a neighbor, as understood through Karol Wojtyla’s idea of “the acting person,” in the context and experience of the migrants and humanitarian volunteers on the U.S.-Mexico border. There are three parts to this article. In the first part, I discuss the reality that migrants and humanitarian volunteers face at the U.S.-Mexico border. Migrants live in a liminal and violent space at the border, and the volunteers choose to enter this space to meet the vulnerable others. In the second part, I examine an idea presented by then-Cardinal Karol Wojtyla in his book The Acting Person. In the book─published in 1969 before he became Pope John Paul II in 1978─Wojtyla addresses the importance of being a neighbor through conscious participation in actions “together with others” for the achievement of the common good. In the third part, I present a critical reflection on the connection between migrants’ context and humanitarian work experience at the U.S.-Mexico border and Wojtyla’s idea of the acting person as a neighbor. By putting the idea of a neighbor in dialogue with the context of the U.S.-Mexico border, I intend to broaden Wojtyla’s thought to address the contemporary circumstances at the border.

Abstract

The Indonesian nation with the motto “Bhineka Tunggal Ika” (Unity in Diversity) is a nation that believes in the beauty of pluralism as the primary model to build unity. Therefore, in building relationships that produce social integration, it should be characterized by acceptance and respect of pluralism and a willingness to learn from this pluralism. Unfortunately, the increasing number of conflicts results in the inability of society to tolerate differences, as seen in the nation’s self-identity becoming unstable. It is clear that the national identity needs to be reinforced through strategic steps that are systematic, clear-cut, and integrated, so that the national unity can be strongly united again. One of the ways to accomplish this is by learning from social integration that occurs in various locations in Indonesia. One such place is in Solor Village, Kupang.  In the midst of various conflicts that center on ethnic groups, race, religion, and class issues in Indonesia, the relationship between the indigenous people and newcomers in Solor Village offers an alternative for social integration that can occur in this “Unity in Diversity” nation. This is the focus of this research, which uses a descriptive-qualitative format to analyze social integration strategic issues between newcomers with different religious and cultural backgrounds from the native inhabitants of Solor Village. The research shows that Solor Village residents succeed in building a harmonious life because in facing multiculturalism, religious and cultural values play an important role.Harmonious life in Solor Village confirm that social integration that build on respect to pluralism is possible.

Abstract

Abstract

Infodemic in the middle of a pandemic is a crucial problem because the issue has become a phenomenon that morally harms the quality of human life. The amount of information on social media related to COVID-19 includes hoaxes that lead users to wrong thinking and acting. In Indonesia, many negative cases occur due to consuming scams on social media. Seeing the infodemic amid the pandemic, the authors used Immanuel Kant's ethical theory to analyze the phenomenon. Kant's ethics theory emphasizes the role of individuals as moral agents. The results from this analysis show that individuals' inability to play their part as moral agents allows the development of an infodemic in the middle of a pandemic. Apathy in accepting and disseminating information to others without verification is unethical and ultimately influences the quality of the community's life.

Abstract

This article discusses the theory of speech acts on the impact of radio sermons by Gereja Kristen Muria Indonesia (GKMI) Perjanjian-Nya amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The method used in this research is qualitative descriptive. This article consists of three parts. In the first part, the author discusses the service carried out by GKMI Perjanjian-Nya through radio sermons during the pandemic. In the second part, the writer discusses the speech act theory pioneered by John Langshaw Austin and developed by Anna Cho. The speech act theory used in the analysis of this article is based on the definitions of locutions, illocutions, and perlocutions described by Cho. In the third part, the author describes the data from the research and analyses it using the speech act theory. This article concludes that the radio sermon service carried out by GKMI Perjanjian-Nya fulfills the requirements for locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts, which are the three main parts of speech act theory. Hearing sermons on the radio helps the community's spiritual growth, as seen through the ability to take ethical responsibility in the form of practices that are in line with God's word preached through the radio.

Abstract

Kata-kata kunci: Kekristenan, perbudakan, kebebasan, Gereja hitam, agama, cinta Allah
