Abstract

Anxiety is a major concern in the learning of speaking by EFL learners in an instructed language instruction situation. Speaking anxiety, despite being extensively studied, has yet to be fully understood. Keeping this in mind, this study explores the reasons of anxiety among foreign language learners, with special reference to "speaking" as a skill. Speaking is one of the abilities that appear to represent the students are able to speak English. Unfortunately, the majority of Indonesian students, particularly those at the university level, lack the necessary skills to communicate effectively in English. Students in the 4.0 era are expected to have strong communication skills and the capacity to interact with their peers. Speaking also demands practice and a strong psychological pleasure that must be pleasant. A related study that enhances the efficacy of speaking in language teaching and learning is critical. This descriptive study discusses the significance of good communication in English as a foreign language. The purpose of this study is to look into the speaking anxiety of MTs Roudlotut Tholibin eighth grade students. The specific goal of this study is to look into the variables that affect students' speaking anxiety as well as methods for reducing it based on the students' personal experiences. There were five students were chosen to participate. The researcher interviewed students who experience anxiety when speaking English, using a descriptive qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Two factors were revealed by the results. They are internal and external factors. English teachers need to comprehend the personalities of each of their students in the classroom, as each student's anxiety level can differ from one another.

Abstract

The goal of this investigation is to determine if BSW is an effective model for writing skills. When it was necessary to explain the writing material to the students, the BSW (Building Scholar Writing) model was selected. Unlike qualitative studies in which BSW works as a theory, the study employed quantitative, experimental, pre- and post-test method, among others, using SPSS (statistical package for social sciences) for the analysis. The school used for the research was the Eighteen students from the Eleventh Grade IPA at MA AN- Namirah as the respondents. There was a test which formed part of the quantitative data collection and research, this was a one group Pre-test and Post-test experimental design. The participants were subjected to a test prior to being enrolled, and then again after completion of the course. In this situation, the focus is on analyzing the data from the pre-test and post-test videos. The mean score in the post test was significantly lower than that in the pretest. There was a noticeable increase in writing skills after practice using BSW technique, which the students adopted.

Abstract

This study explores the practice of Inclusive Education in EFL context, especially in English teaching practices in the classrooms, along with the challenges, and solutions provided at one of public junior high schools in Malang, East Java, Indonesia, by showing how students with special education needs are supported. In this qualitative case study research, the tools used in data collection are semi-structured interviews and classroom observations concerning English teachers and students with SEN. The findings point out that the school accommodates SEN students by means of differentiated teaching, special materials, and adapted assessments. Yet, several challenges persist in the areas of lack of infrastructure, inadequate teacher training, and problems in classroom management. The research also encourages some practical solutions, for example, the formation of collaborative teams of teachers and better communication with parents. This study contributes to the insights of inclusive practices in EFL settings with recommendations on how teacher preparedness and resource allocation need to be improved to foster equitable learning environments.

Abstract

In academic communication, politeness in short messages (SMS) from students to lecturers is an important aspect that reflects respect and language ethics. From a pragmatic perspective, politeness in messages is not only determined by the choice of polite words, but also by understanding the context, language function, and prevailing social norms. Based on pragmatic principles, the messages conveyed by students must pay attention to factors such as social status, the relationship between speakers and interlocutors, and the purpose of communication. For example, the use of opening greetings, polite request expressions, and polite closings shows awareness of the principle of politeness in communication. Conversely, messages that are too direct, without self-introduction, or use informal language can be perceived as lacking respect for academic norms.

Abstract

While there has been extensive research on Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) in multimodal textbooks, most studies primarily focus on analyzing culture and gender. However, the investigation of Character Education using CDA still needs to be more extensive. To fill this void, this study aims to examine the representation of Character Education in secondary-level English textbooks in Indonesia, following one of the goals of the latest curriculum to make each individual have character and behave following the values of Profil Pelajar Pancasila (The Pancasila Students’ Profiles). To address this issue, this study conducted a critical discourse analysis by adopting Kress and Van Leuween's (2006) Visual Grammar Theory to analyze the visual image and Halliday’s (1975) and Matthiessen’s (2004) Systemic Functional Analysis (SFL) to elucidate the textual representation of the character education in the selected EFL-multimodal textbook. This research focuses on Thomas Lickona's (1996) six fundamental components of good character: caring, honesty, fairness, accountability, and respect for self and others. This study can assist educators in incorporating character education into their teaching techniques and provide them with the essential skills and information to foster the development of positive character traits in their students.
