Abstract

In Indonesia, the government endorses EFL textbooks for schools, including Islamic Senior High Schools. However, as there is no specific textbook provided that aligns with the religious values needed in these schools, there is potential for a mismatch between the English material taught and the intended educational goals for Islamic Senior High Schools. For this reason, the present critical discourse study aims to investigate the representation of Islamic values in the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture-endorsed EFL textbook for Islamic Senior High Schools. The study examines the textbook's content and evaluates the extent to which it reflects Islamic values according to Indonesian cultural and religious norms. Through the analysis by adopting Martin & White’s (2005) language appraisal theory, Kress & Van Leeuwen’s (2020) visual grammar theory, this research seeks to identify any gaps and areas for improvement in the representation of Islamic values in the EFL textbook. This study will contribute to inform the development of EFL textbooks that align with cultural and religious values. Further studies on Islamic values among Indonesian ELT textbooks used in most Islamic schools are deemed necessary to promote more understanding about Islamic principles applied in ELT context. Keywords: Critical Discourse Analysis, EFL Textbook, Islamic Values

Abstract

Although numerous studies have explored cultural elements in EFL textbooks, there is a lack of research on the inclusion of Indonesian local culture in EFL textbooks following the autonomous curriculum. Thus, this study utilizes the autonomous curriculum English as a Foreign Language (EFL) textbook employed in Indonesia to examine the portrayal of local culture within it. Through Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) (Fairclough, 2013), researchers want to know the extent of local cultural representation contained in EFL textbooks. This research employs systemic functional analysis, a method that Halliday and Matthiessen (2014) originally devised, to analyze textual data (dialogue, worksheet instruction, and article) contained in EFL textbooks. In addition, visual data is analyzed in accordance with Kress and Van Leeuwen's Visual Grammar Theory (2021). The scope of this research is limited to the depiction of Indonesian local culture in a selected Indonesian EFL textbook that is officially published and utilized within the nation. The results show that local Indonesian culture is integrated in EFL textbooks visually and textually, with elements of local culture that are often found in textbooks, as it mainly focused on the traditions, values and symbols of Indonesian life.

Abstract

In numerous studies conducted worldwide researchers, academics, and educators have been drawn to the environmental values present in English Language Teaching (ELT) textbooks. This study employs Eco-Critical Discourse Analysis (ECDA) to scrutinize the representation of environmental issues in ELT textbooks for secondary school affect Indonesian students’ environmental awareness. The verbal data was analysed using Halliday’s Systemic Functional Analysis. Kress and Van Leeuwen’s Visual Grammar Theory was implemented to explore, comprehend, and investigate visual representations from selected ELT Textbook. This investigation assists in the development of ELT textbook that is consistent with environmental education principles. It is regarded necessary to conduct additional educational on environmental issues in Indonesian ELT textbooks that are used in the majority of Secondary Schools in order to foster a greater understanding of the application of environmental awareness principles in the ELT context.

Abstract

This study aims to critically examine and deconstruct gender stereotypes embedded and hidden within the EFL textbook. Through analyzing various visual images and illustration, this study will focus on identifying benevolent and hostile sexist values (Glick & Fiske, 1996) within the newly published autonomous curriculum EFL textbook. In doing so, Critical Discourse Analysis (Fairclough, 2003) will be employed in order to unearth hidden biases and depict the representativeness of each gender based on benevolent and hostile sexist values. Meanwhile, to analyze the hidden value within visual images, this study employs visual grammar theory (Kress & Van Leeuwen, 2021) and textual analysis (Halliday., 1978). The findings of this study indicate that EFL textbooks effectively incorporate sexism values against gender stereotypes, including Benevolent and Hostile sexism (Glick & Fiske, 1996), consistently throughout the visual and verbal text. Both visual and verbal texts illustrate how these values are integrated into current topics that are associated with gender stereotypes in the form of prejudice contained in EFL textbooks. The implication of this study is a more concrete application for improving educational materials and practices by trying to represent gender stereotypes in EFL textbooks towards ELT. The results of this study will hopefully become empirical evidence within the huge body of gender representation studies. Additionally, the result of this study will hopefully provide valuable insight for students, teachers, and curriculum developers, and broaden their outlooks concerning the hidden benevolent and hostile sexist values within the EFL textbook.

Abstract

While there has been extensive research on Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) in multimodal textbooks, most studies primarily focus on analyzing culture and gender. However, the investigation of Character Education using CDA still needs to be more extensive. To fill this void, this study aims to examine the representation of Character Education in secondary-level English textbooks in Indonesia, following one of the goals of the latest curriculum to make each individual have character and behave following the values of Profil Pelajar Pancasila (The Pancasila Students’ Profiles). To address this issue, this study conducted a critical discourse analysis by adopting Kress and Van Leuween's (2006) Visual Grammar Theory to analyze the visual image and Halliday’s (1975) and Matthiessen’s (2004) Systemic Functional Analysis (SFL) to elucidate the textual representation of the character education in the selected EFL-multimodal textbook. This research focuses on Thomas Lickona's (1996) six fundamental components of good character: caring, honesty, fairness, accountability, and respect for self and others. This study can assist educators in incorporating character education into their teaching techniques and provide them with the essential skills and information to foster the development of positive character traits in their students.
