Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) has now been positioned as a crucial technology for sustainable environmental governance. However, the narratives constructed within it still tend to focus on technical benefits and rarely examine its political aspects critically. The purpose of this study is to reanalyze the socio-political sustainability narratives constructed within the discourse of AI technology. This study uses a qualitative, philosophical approach and draws on the literature for data collection. Literature data were collected from books, journal articles, and other relevant websites. The literature data were then analyzed interpretively and reflectively using a meta-philosophical approach. The results of this study show four main findings: (1) AI needs to be understood as a socio-technical system that is loaded with value and political aspects; (2) The discourse constructed on AI in environmental governance has three main dimensions: technical dimensions related to efficiency, political dimensions related to power aspects in technology, and philosophical dimensions related to how technology participates in shaping human views of the environment; (3) The use of AI has limitations, including in the form of environmental sustainability paradoxes, as well as epistemically being able to narrow the diverse knowledge space; (4) The planetary justice approach is offered as a more just alternative for both humans and the environment. The conclusion is that AI use in environmental governance must be bottom-up and involve democratic public participation to build an inclusive and just technology governance framework.

Abstract

The Kajang indigenous people in Bulukumba Regency, are known for their principles of Kamase-masea (simplicity) and adherence to customary law and the teachings of Pasang ri Kajang. This article analyzes how the Kajang people’s cultural resilience is built through customary law, rituals, and Kamase-masea values in the face of social change and modern crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the pressures of modernization. The research used a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews. The results show that customary law functions as an instrument for conflict resolution and a deterrent against external intervention. Customary rituals play a crucial role in strengthening social solidarity and maintaining community cohesion. Kamase-masea values serve as the foundation for a simple lifestyle that is adaptive to crisis situations. This study concludes and confirms that the cultural resilience of the Kajang people is not a form of absolute rejection of modernity, but rather a strategy to slow the pace of change to prevent the erosion of fundamental customary values. These findings make an important contribution to the sociology of disaster studies by demonstrating that customary law, ritual, and the values of a simple lifestyle can serve as community resilience mechanisms in the face of the pressures of change.

Abstract

Consumption activities in the global era are no longer carried out to meet basic needs and become a place to display identity and social status. Jean Baudrillard refers to the phenomenon as a consumerist society where consumption activities are carried out based on the symbolic value inherent in a product or goods. This article examines the practice of a minimalist lifestyle as a form of resistance to consumer culture through a study of the Lyfe With Less community. This study uses a qualitative method, specifically netnography. Data were collected through netnographic observations, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study show that minimalist living practices carried out by members of the Lyfe with Less community, such as decluttering, using goods to the end, being wise in consumption, and choosing environmentally friendly products, reflect a conscious effort to escape the logic of excessive consumption. This study concludes that although the minimalist lifestyle can be trapped in a system of new signs and symbolic commodifications, this community suggests that minimalism restores the meaning of consumption as a functional and responsible act and can be a strategy of meaningful living that rejects the values of consumerism.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the perceived value of boys and girls within Chinese families in Surakarta during 1998-1999 and to explore similarities and differences across socioeconomic categories: Traders versus Professionals; Single working Fathers versus Working Mothers and Fathers; New Families, Families with Children, Families with Children and Grandchildren; and The Poor versus The Rich. The research employs an emic approach and involves fourteen Chinese families meeting the criteria for these categories. Data were collected through personal observation and in-depth interviews with married couples. Data analysis was conducted interactively through processes of reduction, interpretation, and conclusion-drawing in a circular manner. The results indicate that male and female children are generally regarded as equal in value, differing only in the description of their roles. Traditional views on the superiority of male children are seen as outdated. The perspectives of traders and professionals have shifted from traditional to modern views on gender, while families with both working parents exhibit egalitarian principles. Young couples prefer to have two children, regardless of gender. The study concluded that, there is no significant evidence to suggest that poor families are more likely to experience gender imbalance, while families with sufficient means tend to be more “China-oriented” values.

Abstract

Global warming is a major environmental concern in Bangladesh with social and economic impact, which predominantly affects younger age groups who will suffer from its long-term ramifications. The article looks into the awareness of climate change, perceptions regarding social impacts, adaptive attitudes and behavioral practices, leadership capacity and institutional support among 200 university youth in Bangladesh. Using a mixed-method, cross-sectional approach in which analysis are qualitative and quantitative, our findings indicate almost universal climate consciousness, yet only moderate scientific understanding. Youths have high risk perception and pro adaptive attitude while engaging in resource conserving, tree for planting as well as climate communicating. Leader trust and institutional trust were the most important predictors for pro-environmental behavior, and no predictive value of knowledge (awareness) was found, while attitudinally no to be helpful on predicting pro-environmental behavior. Key barriers to integration include structural limitations (e.g. lack of space), knowledge and awareness gaps, financial obstacles, a lack of vocational education training as well as indicators for youth-led projects such as green activities. The findings emphasize the need for curriculum that injects concepts of climate change into it, leadership development programs and bolstering university sustainability frameworks. This study concludes about the importance of youth empowerment through supporting institutional environment for fostering climate change adaptation and engagement in Bangladesh.

Abstract

Online shopping fraud is one of the most prevalent crimes in Indonesia. This study aims to uncover how someone experiences online shopping fraud using the conceptual framework of desire and the flow of desire by Deleuze and Guattari. Digital ethnography methods were used in this study to collect data through interviews with 42 online shopping fraud victims and participant observation in online shopping fraud victim communities on Facebook and other e-commerce platforms. The results of this study indicate that desires are produced by a desire machine, namely s-commerce, with various values, namely low prices, practicality, branded goods, which are decoded by online shopping fraudsters to trap victims. In addition, desires are channeled through an algorithmic work system that controls shopping behavior and decision-making by victims through the structure of online store’s trust values constructed through the number of followers, attractive displays, number of likes, online store visibility, and the influence of influencers. This study concludes that victims of shopping fraud crimes are brave not because of negligence, but rather the victims have been targeted through the s-commerce infrastructure, namely the algorithms and values that are built to influence the victim’s behavior and decisions.

Abstract

This research explores teachers’ preparedness to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) into education by examining the mediatory role of knowledge, competence, and trust in developing teacher agency. This research was conducted at MAN 2 Ngawi through observation, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and reflective narratives written by 55 participating teachers. The findings show that teachers’ knowledge of AI initially operates at a functional level, primarily associated with efficiency in administrative tasks. However, through training and collaborative reflection, this understanding evolves into a more critical awareness of ethical issues which include bias and inacurracy. Teachers’ competence is shaped by technical skills, adaptability, social interaction as well as contextual conditions. Therefore, competence is seen as both technical and social capital. Meanwhile, trust emerges as the most dynamic and contested dimension. Although some teachers acknowledge the benefits of AI, their trust remains conditional and influenced by their concerns over reliability, ethical implications, and the opacity of AI systems. This research further highlights that the enhancement of teachers’ agency lies in knowledge, competence, and trust that facilitate teachers’ exercise of autonomy and critical development of technology integration in education.

Abstract

To achieve the 2030 SDGs, this study will examine the acceleration of social development through the use of digital technology. This is done in an effort to reduce the disparity between urban and rural areas. Using qualitative methods and data analysis assisted by NVivo 12 Plus software, this study analyzes available digital infrastructure, digital literacy, access to services, and digital economic opportunities. The results show that digital infrastructure is a crucial component in equalizing access to information and public services. However, uneven availability remains a problem, especially in 3T (remote and underdeveloped) regions. Digital literacy in rural communities also needs to be strengthened so that technology can be optimally utilized to support improvements in quality of life. In addition, digital services such as e-government, digital payments, and e-commerce have been proven to open more efficient service access and new business opportunities for local MSMEs in supporting inclusive economic growth. However, this study has limitations in the scope of secondary data and does not include an in-depth field perspective. Therefore, further research is recommended to conduct a comprehensive analysis using mixed methods and expand the research object to different rural areas to obtain a more representative picture of the acceleration of digital transformation in Indonesia.
