Abstract

In 2010, the Semarang government normalized the Banjir Kanal Barat River by dredging and widening the river and managing spatial planning by adding a waterfront. The purpose of normalization is to increase the water discharge capacity so that it can accommodate water flow from three rivers (the Kreo River, the Kripik River, and the Garang River). The focus of this study is to identify social and ecological impacts after the normalization of the BKB River. This study uses qualitative methods with data collection techniques carried out through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The informants in this study numbered seven people, consisting of officers (managers of the BKB Weir and cleaning officers), RW heads, the community, and visitors. The results showed the impact on social aspects, namely that the community has new public spaces, brings economic opportunities, strengthens social solidarity through river mutual aid activities, and, after normalization, the BKB River area becomes prone to crime because the streets are quiet plus there is poor lighting. The ecological impact is the use of land on the banks of the BKB River for fish farming and agriculture. People’s behavior in seeing rivers is formed from the interactions they carry out at the individual level, so people have various perceptions in looking at the river, as mentioned above.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has not only brought major changes to the survival of society at large. The spread of this virus also specifically has an impact on university students who are at home during the quarantine period. This study aims to identify the level of family support among the University of Malaya students. This study used a quantitative research method, with 103 respondents/university students from eight faculties at the University of Malaya. Researchers used a quantitative approach to analyze the information data obtained from respondents. In this study, the collected data were analyzed through descriptive analysis methods to determine the level of family support. The results showed that the level of family support was moderate. This shows that the role of the family is also very important for university students during the COVID-19 pandemic. The family is the basis on which individuals depend for survival, where their basic functions include preparing an environment and situation that is suitable for the development of healthy family members physically, mentally, socially, and so on. This study concludes that family presence not only directly influences various aspects of child socialization but also has an important influence on individual mental health.

Personality and habits that exist in the group will shape ethnic identity, especially in shaping experiences and leadership roles in the group. Ethnic identity was used to investigate how behavior correlates in terms of leadership style and teacher efficacy when in organizations (schools). This study aims to determine the various influences that appear in all research variables. This study uses the Smart PLS 3 program. The data collection technique uses a questionnaire. Based on the findings of the ethnic identity variable at the Huaulu Interior Elementary School, it shows that only the relationship between ethnic identity and teacher efficacy has a positive and significant effect of 0.755. Ethnic identity has no significant effect on leadership style 0.669. Ethnic identity has no significant effect on student learning outcomes, which is 0.943. Leadership style has no significant effect on student learning outcomes, namely 0.83. Teacher efficacy has no significant effect on student learning outcomes, namely 0.560. This study concludes that ethnic identity has the most significant effect on improving teacher self-efficacy. In the future, this study can become a reference for the development of effective cross-ethnic leadership by adding diversity to develop leader-follower relationships.

Abstract

The Generation Z student revolutions in Myanmar that fight for democracy against the military coup in 2021 present challenges that limit the rapidity of the revolution. The research aims to explore Generation Z students' movements and challenges in anti-coup protests, armed struggle movements, and click movements as well as the impacts on the rapidity of the revolution. The study used a qualitative method by applying the social movement theory and revolutionary concept of Charles Tilly which reveal that Generation Z students are confronted with deaths triggered by violent crackdowns, illegal arrests, and imprisonment, difficulties with the environment and livelihoods, financial matters, weaponry issues, and internet outages in conducting movements against the coup. Challenges, however, simply dragged down the protest movement's rapidity; armed movements and online click movements are still escalating on their own rapidity. The research concludes that the outcome of the revolutionary movement is unpredictable except the conflict between the military and armed resistance is gradually expanding day by day during a two-and-a-half-year post-coup period.

Abstract

The recurring flash floods in Ijen District, Bondowoso, has caused damage to houses and villages infrastructures. Flood handling requires coordination from multiple stakeholders, social enterprises and Non-Governmental Organizations. This study explores the stakeholders' involvement in the emergency response of flash flood disaster handling in the Ijen District. This study used qualitative and quantitative approaches. The study found that these stakeholders have their own aims and interests. The analysts predict that the power index value is 0.74, while the interest index value is 0.94. These two figures show that both the power and the interests of the stakeholders are very high in dealing with flash flood disasters. Despite the high values, until August 2020, the recovery process had not been completed yet. These findings are important as an evaluation of the emergency response in disaster handling and a warning that it is important to sustain the environmental condition of mountain slopes

Abstract

The change in community occupation to dairy farmers and the increase in the number of livestock have caused environmental problems. This research focuses on the program’s function on changing the behaviour of the community in disposing of dairy cow manure from the phase of throwing it into the ditch to the phase of processing the manure into the biogas. This research was conducted using qualitative methods, with data collection techniques carried out through in-depth interviews, observation, documentation and literature review. The biogas problem launched by the government has proven to be able to change communities behaviour in the disposal of dairy cows manure. After receiving the biogas program, the community processed the cow dung into biogas. Interestingly, the factor that contributed the most to this behavioural change is economic. This shows that the social, environmental, and economic system have related functions and cannot be separated from each other in society. There is not much research on community behaviour change that is affected by environmental sanitation and motivated by economic factors. This study also alludes to the potential for corruption in the program. This study concludes that the biogas program is able to provide opportunities for the community to save on purchasing household fuel and minimize the waste of dairy cow waste into rivers. Apart from that, the biogas program could be a consideration for the government in creating new programs related to environmental sanitation, especially in the rural livestock industry.

Abstract

Aesthetic labor is a job that involves the display of aesthetic body appearance and emotions by the workers. Aesthetic labor practices are performed by service workers who interact directly with customers, including Sales Promotion Girls (SPGs). This qualitative research aims to reveal how aesthetic labor practices are carried out by SPGs and what burdens that they carry. A total of 10 SPG informants who have at least one year of work experience were involved. This research found that SPGs always have to maintain their body appearances and emotions to attract customers’ attention and convince them to make purchases. They even spend money to maintain their body appearances, such as for buying healthy foods, cosmetics, skincare products, and going to the salon. SPGs are also expected to always display positive emotions in any situation. Furthermore, SPGs often experience sexual harassment at the workplace. It can be concluded that while performing aesthetic labor practices, SPGs actually experience the practices of being a docile body too. In addition, SPGs have a double burden, namely physical and emotional burdens, in doing their jobs. However, there are still many who underestimate SPGs and ignore the difficulty they face as aesthetic labor workers.

Abstract

Korean street food in Indonesia is part of the ‘Korean Wave’ (hallyu) that hit Indonesia in the early 2010s. It is not difficult to find Korean street food in Indonesian cities. Korean street food has become part of urban culture in Indonesia. This research aims to analyze the existence of Korean street food in Indonesia using the concept of glocalization according to Roland Robertson. This research also analyze the glocalization of Korean street food in the local context in the form of halal Korean street food so that it is accepted and consumed by Indonesian people. This study uses a qualitative method with a case study approach as a research strategy. Data collection was carried out by means of observation, interviews, and documentation. The result of this study has shown that through various forms of glocalization, Korean street food has become part of Indonesian society. Korean street food has carried out relative syncretism of food through a process of particularization as universalization. This process is carried out by adopting the halal concept in Korean street food. The results of this research contribute to understanding the glocalization of street food in adopting the halal concept.
