Abstract

The policy of forming and strengthening farmer groups is not a practical solution for advancing agriculture/improving farmer welfare. Strengthening institutions and empowering farmer groups is not merely a matter of agricultural economics, but of political economy. The problem is, there are many technical and non-technical obstacles that place farmer groups as actors in sustainable agricultural policy and development in accordance with SDGs #2. This study discusses the complexity of agricultural problems in Watu Lanur Village, Poco Ranakan Sub-District, East Nusa Tenggara. The less than optimal natural carrying capacity, the socio-economic conditions of rain-fed farmers and the lack of intensive assistance from the government are among the causes. Empowerment of farmer groups is hampered by subsistence ethics and socio-cultural issues (customs/traditions). This study uses qualitative methods with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews and observations of farmer groups. This study shows that the community is trying to empower itself by helping farmer groups. However, in the process, technical and non-technical obstacles are still found that do not support the community's innovation movement. The conclusion of this study is that farmer group institutions are weakened and less oriented towards implementing sustainable agriculture as a result of the establishment of farmer groups simply to fulfill formal aspects of empowering farmers in order to improve farmer welfare and less use of local knowledge in empowering farmer groups.

Abstract

Women’s membership in the Muhammadiyah organization is based on the Islamic view of men and women as ethical agents in inviting goodness and avoiding evil. This theology indicates the importance of women’s role in the public sphere. This study aims to analyze and explore Muhammadiyah’s gender doctrine and agency dynamics in its implementation at the local level by Muhammadiyah women. The ethnomethodology approach was used in this study. Research data was obtained through observation activities, in-depth interviews, and direct involvement in the activities of the Muhammadiyah women’s movement for gender justice. This study was conducted in Malang City, taking into account the dynamics of gender implementation in the Muhammadiyah women’s movement in its efforts to realize gender justice. This research found that there has been gender segregation since 1939 which is reflected in the Muhammadiyah gender statute. In addition, it is written in Muhammadiyah’s gender demands book that there has been a domestication of gender issues, although later developments show that publications represent the spirit of gender equality. This study concludes that the Muhammadiyah women’s movement is not only about adjusting women’s roles in all activities as long as they are within Islamic parameters. In fact, the Muhammadiyah women’s movement has made many contributions to the public interest, from building educational facilities, health, to humanitarian activities.

Abstract

This study was motivated by river water pollution which has an impact on the health of residents who live along the Brantas River Watershed (DAS). Aim of this research is to determine the health awareness and vulnerability of women and their families who live in the Brantas Watershed. An ecofeminist perspective is used to explain women's awareness and participation in protecting the environment and river water. This research uses a descriptive method with a survey research type. The research was conducted in Surabaya City and Sidoarjo Regency. The number of respondents was 200 housewives aged 19 to over 55 years. The research results show that there are still 11.50% of women in Sidoarjo Regency, and 3.40% from Surabaya who use river water and consider it suitable for household needs. Women and their families are also vulnerable to disease, where 35.30% of children from respondents in Surabaya have experienced skin diseases, and 34.2% of children from respondents in Sidoarjo have experienced diarrhea. However, it turns out that women also care about protecting and preserving the environment. This study concludes that efforts are needed to increase women's awareness so that they can avoid behavior that is not beneficial to health, especially in their interactions with polluted river water.

Abstract

The national ideology is often utilized as a tool to legitimize governmental actions. This study seeks to examine how government elites use the Pancasila ideology to legitimize public policies in the era of the COVID-19 pandemic. Employing a grounded reflective interpretive methodological approach within the framework of postfoundational discourse, this study shows that several controversial policies implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic tended to be bolstered and justified by their alignment with the Pancasila ideology. These endeavors are chiefly undertaken by governmental actors who espouse these policies. Representing the ruling regime, these government actors consistently assert adherence to the fundamental tenets of Pancasila or self-identify as the most "Pancasilaist”. This strategy is the main characteristic of the utilization of Pancasila in legitimizing public policies during the pandemic era. Nonetheless, it is imperative to note that the prevailing political regime tends to interpret the tenets of Pancasila in accordance with their own interests. The results of this study confirm that within the context of policies aimed at managing the COVID-19 pandemic, the resultant measures have tended towards being pro-capitalist, anti-democratic, and even anti-intellectual. Nevertheless, for the ruling regime, these policies are perceived to be congruent with the Pancasila ideology. This study concluded that Pancasila is predominantly employed as a means of legitimizing actions that uphold these values.

Abstract

This article discusses the development of the study of “political engineering” and the theoretical discourse used to formulate the continuity and novelty of future studies. It begins by identifying previous studies that serve as the theoretical foundation, and a literature review method is employed to identify the similarities and differences among existing studies, which are then used to formulate new conceptions. The findings indicate that the perspective of “political engineering” has a strong basis and foundation to be developed as a major field of study in Political Science. This is not only due to the variety and development of studies in recent decades, but also because the needs for political science to transform into applicable, practical knowledge capable of addressing contemporary challenges are increasingly urgent. The conception of “new political engineering” focuses on behavior engineering, using psychological mechanisms referred to as hope and fear, directly targeting actors (with or through institutions) and no longer making political institutions the main object of study. Instead, it extends to campaign messages, marketing management, system functions, political institutions, policy products, and policymakers to explain and direct voter behavior.

Abstract

The conflict in the Poboya mining area has not ended due to the large number of parties involved in the conflict and conflict resolution has not been achieved optimally when the parties involved continue to risk strength for the struggle for living space. Social conflict mapping is needed as a conflict resolution step. This research aims to identify conflict patterns and analyze conflict relations between actors in the Poboya gold mining area of Palu City. A descriptive qualitative approach was used to extract empirical data through observation methods, in-depth interviews, and news searches related to conflict phenomena. Data were analyzed interpretatively through an interactive analysis model including data reduction, data display and data verification. Meanwhile, data validity was carried out through the triangulation method. The results showed that conflict patterns stemmed from the continuous struggle for territory. Conflict has two characteristics, namely latent and manifest. The existence of conflict follows the existence and relations between actors in the conflict scheme. It is concluded that the mining industry creates social conflict vulnerabilities that are difficult to end. The findings of this research indicate the need for conflict management and resolution in mining areas.

Abstract

This article endeavors to present findings on the strategic positioning of career development through DIY music by young people as they confront the late capitalism configurations inherent in the creative economy of the provincial city of Purwokerto. Drawing on data collected with a qualitative method, utilizing a biographical approach from October 2022 to January 2025, the study profiles two youth collectives in Purwokerto: Heartcorner Collective and Voicehell. Both employ strategies such as “catch-all” and “non-stop musicians” to advance their careers. However, these strategies fail due to the inadequate development of a comprehensive creative ecosystem in Purwokerto, especially in the music sector. The lack of infrastructure and support leaves DIY musicians struggling to articulate and sustain their careers. This situation places them within the global risk generation, as they navigate the challenges of developing a DIY music career amidst the unfinished creative city framework. Consequently, their efforts to resist established economic patterns and maintain the authenticity of DIY practices become increasingly precarious, reflecting broader issues faced by young people in the creative economy.

Abstract

This study examines the symbolic and aesthetic construction of the coffee shop Ada Apa Dengan Kopi as a simulacrum—a representation that mediates and dominates social reality—and its implications for consumption practices and identity formation among Generation Z. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, the research seeks to understand the subjective meanings that Gen Z visitors construct through activities such as socializing, studying, working from the café (WFC), and taking personal “metime” within the café space. Drawing on Jean Baudrillard’s theories of simulacra, simulation, and hyperreality, the analysis highlights how aesthetic elements (interior design, product presentation, atmosphere) function as signs that not only reflect reality but also shape and precede the café’s social reality. The findings reveal that Ada Apa Dengan Kopi provides a representational space in which Gen Z individuals perform their social and aesthetic identities, experience existential fulfillment and prestige amid the fragility of everyday reality. This space constructs a hyperreal condition where coffee becomes not only a commodity but also a symbol of status and identity and a stage for lifestyle performance. Thus, this coffee shop becomes a simulacrum, namely, the social reality of Gen Z is constructed through signs and aesthetics that paradoxically produce consumption and social interaction in the context of contemporary urban culture.
