Abstract

This study examines the role of Christian Religious Education (CRE) in shaping student character at GKST Tiu Christian Junior High School amid the pervasive use of digital technology. Employing a qualitative case-study design, the research drew on semi-structured interviews with six participants comprising the principal, CRE teachers, and students, together with classroom observations and an analysis of school documents. The data were subjected to thematic analysis through reduction, categorization, and interpretive meaning-making, while source and method triangulation was used to strengthen credibility. The findings show that CRE is implemented through classroom instruction, school worship, and the habitual enactment of values. Its impact, however, remains concentrated in the cognitive domain (moral knowing) and has not consistently extended to the affective and behavioral domains (moral feeling and moral action). Insufficiently guided digital-technology use manifests in learning distractions, weak self-regulation in social-media use, and declining academic responsibility, exposing a persistent gap between the teaching of values and their embodiment in students' daily lives. The study's distinctive contribution is its pneumatological account of character formation: Christian character is shaped not merely through moral regulation, but through inner transformation effected by the Holy Spirit. The findings therefore call for an integrative CRE model that combines spiritual formation, critical reflection, and ethical guidance for digital engagement.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines how Christian Religious Education (CRE) can cultivate tolerance at SMP GPID Sumbersari, a school characterized by religious diversity. Employing a qualitative design, data were generated through in-depth interviews with one CRE teacher and three students from Christian and Muslim backgrounds, supplemented by participant observation. The data were analyzed inductively and validated through triangulation. The findings reveal concrete patterns of social exclusivity: restricted peer interaction during recess, cynical remarks about the religious practices of others, and emotional distance arising from the school's perceived identity as a "Christian school." These dynamics produce reciprocal forms of withdrawal and rejection between Christian and non-Christian students. The study argues that cognitively oriented CRE has not yet translated adequately into transformed social conduct. CRE therefore needs to move beyond predominantly theoretical instruction toward contextual, dialogical, and encounter-based pedagogies, including interfaith dialogue, structured cross-religious encounters, and collaborative projects. Such practices can create safer relational spaces, deepen empathy, and shift tolerance from passive coexistence to an actively embodied ethic of love.

Abstract

Transhumanism increasingly relocates the human longing for salvation from the religious sphere into technological projects. Among its most radical proposals is mind uploading: the claim that human mental structures, memories, personality, or consciousness could be transferred to, or reconstructed on, a non-biological substrate, allowing some form of existence to continue beyond biological death. This article subjects the promise of digital immortality to a Christian soteriological-eschatological critique. Using a constructive-systematic theological approach, it combines literature review, conceptual analysis, and critical engagement with recent scholarship on transhumanism, personal identity, artificial intelligence, and Christian eschatology. It argues that mind uploading cannot be identified with salvation or resurrection because informational persistence is not the same as personal continuity, disembodiment is incompatible with a resurrection-centered anthropology, and Christian salvation is not achieved through technological preservation but through God's action in Christ. The article's contribution lies in formulating “resurrective-continuity criteria” comprising four interrelated elements: divine agency, embodied personal continuity, Christological participation, and cosmic renewal. These criteria show that technology may extend, represent, or simulate life, but it cannot produce the eschatological mode of life that Christian faith names resurrection. The decisive problem raised by transhumanism, therefore, is not merely the limit of technological capability. It is the redefinition of salvation itself: from gift to engineering, from resurrection to informational replication, and from new creation to the persistence of a system.

Abstract

Psalm 137 preserves the collective trauma of the people of Judah in the aftermath of the Babylonian exile. This article analyses Psalm 137 through a postcolonial hermeneutical approach in order to disclose the dynamics of imperial hegemony, cultural resistance, and the preservation of communal identity under conditions of domination. Employing a qualitative library-based method, the study proposes that Babylon's demand that the Judean exiles sing the "songs of Zion" may be read not as a neutral request for entertainment, but as a practice of cultural domination that sought to appropriate and control the identity of the colonised community. Conversely, the refusal to sing, the vow to remember Jerusalem, and the lament articulated in the psalm are interpreted as forms of symbolic resistance against imperial power. The article then brings this reading into dialogue with documented struggles for customary land among the Toba Batak community in North Sumatra. Since this is a library-based study, the contextual discussion draws on scholarly literature, advocacy reports (e.g., AMAN, KSPPM), and documented legal cases rather than on ethnographic fieldwork. In this comparative light, the psalm illuminates analogous patterns in the defence of ancestral land, collective memory, and cultural identity amid contemporary forms of marginalisation. The article therefore argues that Psalm 137 is not merely a historical record of suffering, but a text of resistance that remains theologically and ethically relevant for communities confronting domination, dispossession, and injustice in the present.
