Abstract

Economic development is an effort to improve people's living standards through expanding job opportunities and directing the distribution of income evenly. However, in reality there are still many problems that occur, especially in unemployment. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the variable Human Development Index, Investment, and Provincial Minimum Wage on the open unemployment rate in East Java in 2013-2020. The method used in this study is a quantitative method with multiple linear regression analysis model. The data used are secondary data obtained from BPS. This study shows that the HDI and Investment variables have a positive influence on the open unemployment rate. However, the UMP variable has a negative effect on the open unemployment rate in East Java in 2013-2020. This study contributes to the existing literature that it is not always the HDI, Investment, and UMP variables that can affect the open unemployment rate which can hinder economic growth.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the causality relationship between variables, impulse response and variance decomposition of sources of development financing for a country in Asia from macroeconomic variables, namely government debt, foreign investment (FDI), exports, inflation and economic growth using the Panel VAR method and the operation of the STATA software. The impulse response results show that the shock of the government debt variable and inflation was responded positively by the economic growth variable. FDI and export variables responded negatively by the economic growth variable. The results of variance decomposition show that the export variable is a driving factor for economic growth in the Asian region.

Abstract

Deontological economics is a value-based approach to economics which is originated and inspired by Kant’s deontological theory of ethics. It has come to us to challenge the mainstream economics by proposing the view that economics is not value free. It views that ethical value plays an important role in economics, and ethics must be incorporated in economics. Exploring this economic school of thought is very interesting. It will present a new nuance, in the sense that economics will not get into the right path, if it does not know about ethics and does not practice it. It warns the mainstream economics that economics is not only about maximization of profit and satisfaction, but it is about the realization of value.Since Deontological economics and Islamic economics both proclaim that morality and ethical values cannot be separated from economy, as they will guide human behaviour in their doing economy to achieve social bliss, happiness and social harmony as well as their economic development, this research tries to discuss and investigate the incorporation of ethical values both in Islamic and in Deontological economics. The ethical value advocated by Deontological economics of human existence in this world such as to prosper on earth and to heal the world to make it better place to seek the pleasure of God and to keep the balance in economy between satisfying individual needs and social needs, and between satisfying material needs and spiritual needs, to respect others, to preserve the human’s dignity and many other values which are similar or even the same as that of what Islamic economics advocates is very interesting and it is worth to have our attention and discussion. Despite the ethical value of an Islamic economics is departing from the Quran and the Sunnah, this research comes to the conclusion that there existed similarity between both of them or even the same, except the value of usury (riba). Another outcome is that both of them could be grounded in the real economic activities, and it is not merely theoretical construct.

Abstract

Since the 1980s, surveys have portrayed East Java Province as an economic success story, with high levels of growth spread across all major sectors in rural as well as urban settings. East Java appears a victim of its own success with large-scale investors in the processed food sector considering relocating to Central Java where minimum wages are lower. In terms of domestic investment, housing, industrial estates and offices (27 per cent), transportation and warehousing (14 per cent) and food (8 per cent) were the main destinations in Q1 22. In Q2 2022, the principal sources of foreign investment were the United States (43 per cent, comprising mainly PT Freeport Indonesia’s Rp 5 trillion realised investments in its Gresik copper smelter), Hong Kong (19 per cent), Singapore (15 per cent) and Japan (9 per cent). Another aspect of the balanced development thesis was that trade was not the driving force in growth. That still seems to be so. Input-output analysis appears to show that the province’s surplus is actually not very large – suggesting a high degree of complementarity between East Java’s agricultural, manufacturing and export sectors. While the balanced development thesis was never meant to imply that East Java’s regions had experienced a uniform stage of development, it is possible to identify ‘winners’ and ‘losers’ within the province. So, what is East Java’s future trajectory and does it continue to deserve a reputation for balanced development? In terms of investment, balance may still be the hallmark of provincial development. In order to navigate through the ‘middle-income trap’, the province will need to invest more in human capital to foster entrepreneurship, productivity and wellbeing. Management of the provincial economy will be increasingly difficult as the intricate and complex nexus of politics and business in the province evolves.
