Abstract

The global environmental crisis poses multidimensional challenges that demand integrated spiritual, social, and ecological responses. Islam views humans as khalīfah fi al-arḍ (vicegerents on earth) responsible for maintaining balance and prosperity within creation. In this context, green waqf (eco-waqf) emerges as an Islamic economic innovation oriented toward environmental conservation and community empowerment. This study aims to analyze the concept of green waqf from the perspective of Islamic economics and maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah, examine its role in realizing ecological piety, and identify its practical implementation and challenges in Indonesia. Using a qualitative approach through literature review and a case study on the Bogor Forest Waqf Foundation (YWHB), the study finds that green waqf is not merely environmental philanthropy but a manifestation of ecological piety integrating spiritual, social, and economic dimensions. The YWHB has successfully implemented sustainable green waqf practices through conservation, community empowerment, and eco-da’wah programs grounded in maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah, which expands the objectives of Islamic law to include ḥifẓ al-bi’ah (environmental preservation). Theoretically, this study broadens the horizon of Islamic economics toward a spiritually grounded green economy; practically, it provides a sustainable and worship-oriented institutional model for green waqf development.

Abstract

Indonesia’s current ecological condition is highly alarming, primarily due to human behavior and the way of thought in interacting with nature. A spiritual void characterizes the ways in which nature is enjoyed, managed, and exploited. The floods and landslides that occurred in Sumatra and Aceh in late 2025 serve as a serious indication of the disharmony between human and the natural environment. The environmental crisis thus reflects a deeper spiritual crisis. This study aims to reconstruct Al-Ghazali’s eco-theological thought and to position his spiritual–ethical framework as a conceptual foundation for responding to the modern ecological crisis, which tends to exclude the spiritual dimension of nature. Methodologically, this research employs a descriptive-analytical method with a philosophical approach to Al-Ghazali’s works related to nature, particularly Al-Hikmah fī Makhluqāt Allah, Ihyā’ ‘Ulūm al-Dīn, and Mishkāt al-Anwār. The findings reveal that: (1) the relationship between God, nature, and humans constitutes an inner spiritual interconnectedness between God, His manifestations (tajallī), and His vicegerent (khalīfah); (2) as God’s vicegerent, humans bear the trust (amānah) to preserve the sustainability of nature, including mountains and vegetation; (3) Al-Ghazali’s eco-theology emphasizes ecological simplicity (zuhd) and environmental preservation (hifẓ al-arḍ) as ethical principles in managing nature; and (4) the 2025 Sumatra–Aceh disasters may be interpreted as expressions of a spiritual crisis in humanity’s treatment of the environment. This study concludes that the human–nature relationship is not based on domination, physicality, or power, but rather on stewardship (trust), spirituality (inner awareness), and the harmony of the earth’s ecological system.

Abstract

Abstract Compulsive buying disorder has become a serious threat to the economic and psychological resilience of Muslim families in Indonesia. Data from the Financial Services Authority (2024) records a significant 23.4% year-on-year increase in household consumer debt, with 38% related to impulsive shopping behavior triggered by e-commerce and fintech platforms. This study aims to formulate a financial literacy model based on Maqasid Shariah with the hierarchy of dharuriyyat, hajiyyat, and tahsiniyyat to overcome this behavior. Using qualitative library research with an interdisciplinary approach, this study analyzes normative Islamic texts, contemporary consumer psychology literature, behavioral economics, and Ministry of Religious Affairs policy documents to build a holistic intervention framework. The results show that overcoming compulsive buying requires a tiered approach: (1) The dharuriyyat level in the form of emergency interventions to save the five basic principles (al-kulliyat al-khams); (2) The hajiyyat level in the form of cognitive barrier mechanisms and substitution activities to prevent relapse; and (3) The tahsiniyyat level in the form of building qana'ah character, wealth spirituality, and transformative financial literacy. This article concludes that this model has strategic implications for the Directorate General of Islamic Community Guidance, particularly in developing Marriage Guidance (Bimwin) modules, Islamic Family Counseling programs, mosque-based sharia financial literacy movements, and the "Wealth as Trust, Sakinah Family" digital campaign.

Abstract

Coastal abrasion and environmental degradation pose serious challenges to sustainable development in Indonesia. Mosques, as centers of worship and social life, hold strategic potential in fostering ecological awareness among communities. This study explores the implementation of ecotheology at Jami’ Al-Ilham Mosque, Bakalan Village, Pati, which integrates Islamic values with environmentally friendly practices and coastal community empowerment. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and analyzed thematically. Findings reveal that ecotheology at Al-Ilham Mosque is grounded in scriptural texts (Qur’an, Hadith, and scholarly views) as well as ethical principles of Islam emphasizing compassion and sustainability. Implementation is realized through the Sedekah Rongsokan (scrap donation) program, employing spiritual, cultural, and structural approaches that transform waste into both religious charity and economic empowerment. Plastic and shell waste are recycled into useful products, reinforcing synergy between ecology, economy, and spirituality. Al-Ilham Mosque has become a national model, receiving the AMPeRa Green Mosque Award from the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs in 2024. The study highlights the mosque’s role as a socio-ecological agent, linking Islamic spirituality with concrete environmental preservation efforts, while supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Academically, this research strengthens Islamic ecotheology literacy and provides a reference for policy development on environmentally sustainable mosques in coastal regions.

Abstract

This article examines the gap between the implementation standards for Marriage Guidance (Bimbingan Perkawinan, Bimwin) established in Decree of the Director General of Islamic Community Guidance No. 172 of 2022 and the effectiveness of implementation at Offices of Religious Affairs (Kantor Urusan Agama, KUA). It aims to explain Bimwin as an adult-education program and to assess how regulatory provisions interact with managerial capacity through planning, organizing, leadership, and supervision. The study uses a descriptive qualitative approach and document analysis of the 2022 decree and 23 accredited scholarly journal articles published between 2021 and 2025. The documents were analyzed by inventorying regulatory provisions, coding evidence according to the four management functions, comparing policy standards with recurring implementation patterns, and conducting a cross-source synthesis. The findings show that the decree provides an operational framework covering participant eligibility, three delivery modes, instructional duration and sessions, organizers, facilitators, financing, and administrative reporting. Substantive effectiveness, however, remains uneven. In planning, national standards are not consistently translated into needs assessment and measurable learning outcomes. In organizing, facilitator availability, budgets, partnerships, and facilities vary among KUA. In leadership, learning quality depends on facilitators’ capacity to apply adult-oriented, dialogical, and contextual methods. In supervision, reporting remains more effective at documenting program delivery than at measuring changes in participants’ knowledge, attitudes, and marital readiness. The article’s novelty is an integrated learning-governance model in which the four functions mediate the relationship between regulation and Bimwin outcomes. The practical implication is that KUA should institutionalize needs assessment, facilitator competency standards, cross-sector coordination, pre- and post-assessment, and proportionate follow-up so that administrative compliance develops into educational effectiveness and stronger family resilience.

Abstract

The principles of Ulum al-Qur'an operationalize the concept of Madanī as verses that abrogate (naskh) the Makkī revelations. This perspective gives rise to various problems, particularly concerning verses addressing interreligious relations, in which verses advocating peace and coexistence with adherents of other religions are considered abrogated by the so-called “sword verses” revealed subsequently. The reconceptualization of the Makkī–Madanī framework has therefore become urgent in order to generate an interpretation more compatible with the modern world. Accordingly, this study seeks to reformulate the Makkī–Madanī principles by employing the theoretical framework of the historicity of the Qur’an. The findings demonstrate that the concept that should be foregrounded is “prioritizing the Makkī and deferring the Madanī,” since the Makkī constitutes the fundamental principle, whereas the Madanī represents its derivative branch

Abstract

In Indonesia, the determination of Islamic holidays remains a controversial issue that goes beyond methodological debates between hisab and rukyat. This study aims to analyze: (1) the genealogy of authority regarding the determination of holidays in Islamic tradition; (2) the legitimacy of key actors—the state, religious scholars, and Muslim communities—in contemporary Islam; and (3) the structural factors driving the fragmentation of authority. This study employs a qualitative approach, utilizing a critical literature design for the review and analysis of critical documents through a sociological-phenomenological approach. The analysis employs Max Weber’s typology and Michel Foucault’s genealogy to trace the historical production of religious authority and map the positions of each actor. The results of this study indicate that religious authority for determining holidays is historically constructed, never monolithic, and always contested. While Muslim communities increasingly demonstrate religious autonomy, the state claims rational-legal legitimacy through isbat hearings, and religious scholars and organizations maintain epistemic-traditional legitimacy. The fragmentation of authority is a feature of modern Islam, which demands adaptive dialogue rather than unification. This study employs only a qualitative methodology based on document review and analysis. Furthermore, the findings cannot be generalized as they are limited to the Indonesian context. Consequently, additional research is needed to expand the data and broaden the scope of the analysis.
