Jurnal Ilmu Komunikasi diharapkan menjadi wadah pengembangan ilmu komunikasi, baik dari hasil penelitian maupun analisis-reflektif. Abstract

The Mobile Legends game application has virtual communication features, including Voice Chat, Chatbox, and Quick Chat. This study aims to observe variations of virtual communication used by the Moba Analog Team when playing the game. This study uses a qualitative method with a virtual ethnographic approach. The results show that virtual communication produces a variety of distinctive languages or odes) that is understood and interpreted by members of the Moba Analog Team. A variety of languages with unique codes has been produced due to the virtual conversations intensity and the need for tactics to run the game. Moba Analog Team members play games together almost every night. Virtual communication features facilitate communication between members when acting as a player in the Mobile Legends game. The virtual conversation while playing the games is not merely talking about playing tactics, but it extends to wider topics such as lectures, friendship, family, viral issues on social media, and politics.

Abstract

The development of internet technology opens up opportunities for the development of citizen journalism. This study discusses how the construction of news of the backpack journalist “Expedition Indonesia Biru” on social media. The purpose of this study is to find out the construction of news carried out by citizen journalists with the concept of the blue Indonesian expedition of backpack journalist in their documentary film on the YouTube channel. The research method used is the semiotic analysis of Roland Barthes. The results of the research show that there is news construction by backpack journalists against the feud of the Samin people and the cement factory. It is unavoidable that the news is only seen from one point of view of the Samin people, so that the reporting is not balanced. There is denial of journalistic ideology, where a journalist must be disciplined in verifying, comprehensively, proportionally, and maintain independence from news sources. This element of journalism cannot be carried out by backpack journalists because they do not represent certain media institutions.

Abstract

The newcomers within an organization must carry out a socialization process, therefore, employee onboarding into organizations is seen as essential for the process of adaptation to the organizational culture. One of the things newcomers can do during the socialization process is to adapt and get to know the organization and the actors in the organization through adapt communication. This study seeks to find out how newcomers in MAX Academy and PT ARISTA organizations manage self-disclosure in the organization through the socialization process; early socialization, encounter, and metamorphosis.  The results have revealed that in the newcomer self-disclosure practice there are limitations in self-disclosure to colleagues, such as age gap and educational status. However, the lack of self-disclosure does not prevent newcomers from continuing to carry out the socialization process with various predetermined stages. Additionally, the observed companies have different styles in fostering new employees in the socialization process, namely MAX Academy provides a program called onboarding to help newcomers in the socialization process, meanwhile PT ARISTA gives fully authority to newcomers to use their own model in the socialization process into the new organizational culture

Abstract

Children's books that use graphic design are currently in great demand by children. Mizan Publisher has published a book that utilizes the concept of graphic design as a way to attract children's reading interest. Graphic design elements in children's books are the key to successful persuasion.This study aims to measure the extent to which graphic design as a propaganda medium affects reading interest. The research uses a quantitative method through parametric statistics with a Likert scale. The correlation analysis is examined by using simple linear regression analysis, Pearson correlation test,  and coefficient of determination test. Based on the simple regression test the result has revealed that the value of r = 0.767 and has a coefficient of determination of 17.7%. Which shows that there is a positive and very strong relationship between the influence of visual communication on graphic design of Mizan's book on reading interest by 17.7%.

Abstract

This paper aims to describe the symbolic reality of higher education based on journalists' viewpoints.  This study focuses on uncovering the framing of news stories conducted by Jawapos.com, Detik.com, and Suarasurabaya.net pertaining to the educational issues of five public universities in Surabaya. Using quantitative content analysis and a thematic qualitative approach, the findings illustrate that Airlangga Univerity (Unair) is the university with the highest media visibility with 27 news articles published by those three news media, followed by Institut Teknologi Sepupuh November (ITS) and Universitas Negeri Surabaya (Unesa) with 12 news stories respectively. Meanwhile, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Jatim (UPNVJ) and State Islamic University of Sunan Ampel (UINSA) are in both fourth and fifth rank, with each respective news article is 5 and 2. Further, in framing news, those three news media tend to frame campus reputations on aspects of leadership, academic performance, emotional appeal, social responsibility, innovation, and campus attitudes toward consumers.

Abstract

Sexual harassment is an issue that has long been a social problem, especially in Indonesia. The number of sexual harassment cases is increasing every year and most of them are dominated by verbal sexual harassment such as catcalling. One of the social media that campaigns for the issue of catcalling is the Instagram account @dearcatcallers.id. This study discusses how the catcalling campaign for women on the Instagram account @dearcatcallerd.id. This study aims to find out the discourse behind the @dearcatcallers.id campaign content using Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis. This study resulted in the finding that @dearcatcallers.id created and shared its content in response to harassment events that occurred in the form of survivor narratives or videos from third parties, not in the form of content that was intentionally made about catcalling. The story is rewritten or disseminated by emphasizing several meanings so that the essence of catcalling can be accepted by netizens. For example, making Bold Style writing, using exclamation points, emoticons, everyday language, and terms that have positive connotations.

Abstract

This study discusses the involvement of text and social elements in producing texts used for mass communication through a sociolinguistic perspective. The purpose of this study is to elaborate on sociolinguistic factors of the Surabaya Mayor's appeal in handling Covid-19. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative. The primary data of the research is the recorded audio of the appeal of the mayor of Surabaya. The results have revealed that the communicator uses a specific diction that aims to bring social distance closer to the communicant. Various dictions are used with the pronouns Kita/Kami, Saya, Kulo, and Jenengan. In addition, communicators also use Javanese as a form of ethnic solidarity and, in a certain part, communicators use Arabic to show aspects of religiosity.
