Abstract

As long-life learners, teachers should not stop learning and evaluating their teaching-learning process. One of the ways to evaluate or reflect a teacher’s teaching is by conducting reflective practice. Reflective practice or sometimes called reflective teaching is not a new concept. In the education field, reflective teaching has been enforced as a means to develop teacher professionalism. This study aims at reviewing some reflective practice tools utilized by in-service teachers in reflecting their classroom performance as an attempt to improve their teaching. Two in-service teachers with teaching experience ranging from 3-10 years are concerned with this research. Data gained through interviews. The data collected are compiled by applying Miles, Huberman, & Saldana’s (2014) interactive model data analysis. The results of data analysis reveal the individual differences among in-service teachers’ preference in doing reflection toward their teaching. The finding of this study leads in-service teachers to know kinds of tools used in reflective practice in their teaching-learning process to improve their teaching quality and learning outcomes.

Each class consisted of two groups based on the level of critical thinking (high and low). To gain the data, two instruments were used namely writing test and critical thinking test. The data were, then, analysed by using Multifactor Analysis of Variance ANOVA 2X2 and Tukey test. Before conducting the ANOVA test, pre-requisite test namley normality and homogeneity test were conducted. The findings of this research are: (1) SAVI is more effective than TSTS (2) The students with high critical thinking have better writing skill than those having low critical thinking; and (3) There is an interaction between teaching methods and students’ critical thinking in teaching writing. Therefore, it is recommended for English teachers to implement SAVI in teaching writing activities because this method gives positive contribution in improving the students writing skill and facilitating the students’ critical thinking to produce a good text.

Abstract

English for young learners (EYL) studies have dealt with quiet number of teaching methods and strategies. However, researchers have not conducted adequate analyses of EYL teacher candidates‟ creativity in integrating the local context into their lesson plans. This writing, therefore, address this issue by analyzing the teacher candidates‟ portfolio when they take English for Children course. Limitation of accessibility, however, have led this study to only focus on analyzing the portfolios submitted by the teacher candidates pursuing their S1 degree in an English Language Teaching Department of State Islamic College of Metro Lampung, Indonesia. This study will contribute to filling the gap of the stakeholders‟ expectation toward the possibility of integrating the local context, particularly Islamic values as they are the prominent characteristic of the college, into the arena of ELT within Indonesian context. The analysis shows that local and ideological features are inseparable in ELT and that those are commonly integrated with songs and pictures.
