Since Covid-19 Pandemic, World Health Organization (WHO) conducts regular press briefs to provide the development of various aspects of the pandemic. During the press brief, the use of war terms is pervasive, both in literal context and in metaphorical use. This study investigates the use of war terms metaphor in the press briefing of WHO on Covid-19 development from February 4 2020 to August 31, 2020. The aim is to identify the peak of its use and what it implied in comparison with the context of case development. Corpus analysis is conducted to seventy-eight transcripts of WHO press briefing and the data concordance is conducted using Antconc concordance software. The Conceptual Metaphor Theory of Lakoff and Johnson is used as the theoretical framework. The result shows that the peak of the war metaphor usage is in March 2020. Even though the case is increasing after March but the use of war metaphor keeps declining in the following months which suggests the shifting of the focus of communication as more has been known about the virus. Furthermore, the data shows that WHO is not only fighting the virus of Covid-19 itself, but also the infodemic and fake news at the early stage of the spread.

The discourse of interpersonal communication in social media group contains of turn adjacency and simultaneous feedback of communication. Especially in WhatsApp group, the model of communication constructs a discourse by using a certain ideological mode through linguistic features. The communication model in the WhatsApp group involves participants directly, so that it is analyzed through mental and cognition with the semantic aspects that participants use. This study aims to reveal the contention of meaning in WhatsApp group by using cognitive semantic analysis. Cognitive semantic analysis is used to examine social cognition that affects contention of meaning among participants in the group. Contention of meaning in WhatsApp group communication is analyzed in three aspects; (1) the underlying social cognition, (2) the scheme of meaning in the group, and (3) the effects of the interaction scheme. The identification of semantic elements in interpersonal communication is based on microstructure analysis of van Dijk’s model i.e., linguistic features, such as background, coherence, detail, lexicon, pronominal, and graphic elements. Based on the research findings, the dominant aspect of social cognition that underlying participants in WhatsApp group communication are knowledges, attitudes, opinions, and concerns of the group members. The contention scheme of meaning in groups produces a discourse interaction model that tends to overlap and be structured. Effects that arose from the contention of meaning is ideological dominative groups and spread of knowledge on the topic of debate on all members of the group. This study reinforces the necessity of ideological construction through the contention of meaning in cognitive semantic studies and critical discourse especially in computer-mediated discourse analysis.

The reading process, especially in reading English texts, is a matter of extracting information from the text and a knowledge-sharing dialogue activity between readers and writers. Students admit that it is not easy to distinguish different texts that they must understand. In many cases, students often have difficulty understanding the content of the text and the context due to a lack of vocabulary and grammar. The lecturer then tried to apply several reading strategies to overcome these problems. One of them is by using the scaffolding method to help students. Then, the emergence of technology and digital sources increases the challenges of addressing the problems. Therefore, this study involved 139 students of the Multimedia Engineering Technology Study Program at the State Polytechnic of Creative Media, where the text used is mainly digital. After applying the scaffolding method, this research method uses a qualitative descriptive method describing the impact of changes on students' digital reading skills. The study carried out six types of scaffolding at three reading steps using the scaffolding method to improve students' digital text reading skills, especially students of the Multimedia Engineering Technology Study Program, which mainly use the digital text. The study results show that study result scaffolding techniques highly contribute to enhance students’ reading skills. By applying the scaffolding technique, students are able to overcome the difficulties experienced by students and get scores above the passing grade, in an average of 85, which is 20 points higher before applying such scaffolding methods in the reading activity. In addition to this, most students showed positive responses to the increasing skills and comprehension of reading the digital text through the application of the scaffolding method.

Studies on the rhetorical structure and linguistic features of research article published in reputable international journals, and a genre-based approach to teaching writing have received considerable attention from scholars in the last decade. However, little research has been conducted on writing RA abstracts based on the standard of international journals by combining the genre-based approach and mentoring process. Therefore, this study intends to address such a gap by applying the genre-based mentoring method to help improve the rhetorical moves and tenses usage of RA abstract drafts written by lecturers in social and humanities in Bengkulu. The participants of this study consisted of 20 lecturers. This study used the frameworks of Swales and Feak (2009) for move structures and Swales and Feak (2012) for tenses usage. These framework were used to evaluate the RA abstract drafts of the participants. The findings confirm that the quality of RA abstract drafts showed a better improvement viewed from the frequency of the rhetorical moves and the use of appropriate tense. It indicates that the RA abstract drafts of the participant have complied with the structure of international journals in terms of rhetorical moves and the use of appropriate tenses. Moreover, genre-based mentoring is effectively used in teaching academic
