Abstract

This study examines the multicultural contents in two international textbooks entitled New Interchange Fifth Edition used in Indonesia for English foreign language (EFL) students to underlying the multicultural values. Applying Kachru and Nelson’s model of English and their categorization into Inner, Outer and Expanding circles. This study also implemented both quantitative and qualitative analysis. The quantitative analysis refers to the quantitative data and to what extent multicultural values of race/ethnicity, gender/sexuality, social class, and people with are represented. The result showed that the representation of culture from three circles countries were unbalanced and stereotypical. The percentage shows from materials representation of inner, outer and expanding circles were 74,1 %, 23,3 % and 2,6% respectively. There were highly dominated inner circle culture even though these textbooks are used in expanding circles (e.g., Indonesia). Anchored from the research finding, it suggest that both textbook writers and designers should emphasized on balance multicultural values in international textbook materials particularly in expanding circle country (e.g. Indonesia) in order to help students recognize the cultural diversity.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of implementing a project-based learning model (PjBL) with an ethnoscience approach on the level of understanding of elementary school students' concepts and to determine student responses to the application of a Project Based Learning Model (PjBL) with an ethnoscience approach. This study was a quasi experimental research design with a post-test only group design. The samples used were two classes of fourth grade students as the  experimental class consisted of 27 students and the control class consisted of 23 students. The sampling technique used was multiple purposive sampling. The data collection method used was the test and non test method. The instruments used are multiple choice post-test questions and student response questionnaires to the application of a project-based learning model (PjBL) with an ethnoscience approach. The normality and homogeneity test as the initial test showed the data were normally distributed and homogeneous. This study used the average difference test with the parametric statistical test Independent-Sample T Test. The t-test results showed that the t-count value is 2.452 t-table 2.011 so that there is a significant difference in the post-test mean of students in the experimental class and the control class. The average score of student responses to the use of the Project Based Learning Model (PjBL) model with an ethnoscience approach is 89.6 with very good criteria. The application of the Project Based Learning (PjBL) model with the ethnoscience approach affects science conceptual understanding.

Abstract

Each ethnic group has its own local wisdom, which serves as a compass for their life, including in the education sector. Beguru is local wisdom of the Sasak community, Indonesia in education that is rich with principles. This study aims to explore principles of beguru in relation to the learning process and evaluation. The study applied an ethnography-type naturalistic approach. Data was collected by means of ethnographic interviews and observations. Data analysis employed interactive models proposed by Miles, Huberman, Saldana, comprising three stages: data condensation, data display, and conclusion. Based on the method, the study identified 4 principles related to the learning process and 2 principles related to learning evaluation. The four principles of beguru related to the learning process include 1) ethics principle, 2) mastery learning principle, 3) individual learning principle, and 4) learning acceleration principle. While the two principles of beguru related to learning evaluation, include: 1) holistic principle, and 2) concurrent principle. The principles are strongly adhered to during beguru resulting in effective, efficient learning processes and optimum realization of expected competencies. The above principles are very appropriate to apply in contemporary education for improving the quality of learning processes and outcomes.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of learning creativity on student learning outcomes in Al-Quran Hadith subjects at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Nurul Yaqin Pekanbaru. This research is a quantitative research by testing hypotheses or solving problems on the basis of theoretical deduction, with measurements using statistical data. This research was conducted at Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) Nurul Yaqin Pekanbaru with a population of 350 people. The sampling technique used in this research is proportional stratified random sampling. The total number of sample population is known to have a set precision of 5%, then the number of samples in this study is 175 students. The data collection techniques in this study were questionnaires, tests and documentation. The data analysis technique in this study can be divided into three major stages, namely 1) Research Instrument Test Phase (Questionnaire/Questionnaire), 2) Classical Assumption Test Phase (Test Data before being analyzed by Parametric analysis), and 3) Research Hypothesis Testing Phase ( Statistical test to test the research hypothesis). Based on the results of research on the effect of learning creativity on student learning outcomes in the subjects of Al-Qur'an Hadith at MTs Nurul Yaqin Pekanbaru, which is associated with theory, it can be concluded that learning creativity (X) with student learning outcomes (Y) obtained tcount of 4.320 while ttable with a significance level of 5% and degrees of freedom (dk) = nk = 175–2 = 173 is 1.960. In this case, tcount (4,320) ttable (1,960), so that it is obtained in the area where Ho is accepted (Ha is accepted, Ho is rejected). In addition, from the table above, it can be seen that the probability value is 0.006, which means this number is smaller than the significance level (0.006 0.05), meaning that it can be concluded that the variable of learning creativity has a positive and significant influence on student learning outcomes

Abstract

With the change in the learning system from conventional to online in the current pandemic, it is a challenge for teachers, especially early childhood educators, to find interactive learning methods. Therefore, in this paper, we will focus on the Learning Management System (LMS) strategy used by educators to continue to provide quality interactive learning to early childhood education level students. Because until now, the problem faced by Early Child Education (ECE) teachers is that there is no research on dual-function learning applications, both for communication and giving learning assignments. The research will be conducted using the slovin method and surveys of 70 teacher respondents who have experience using learning applications and 30 of them are experts in assessing the visualization of a system. interviews were conducted with a time span of one month from February - March 2021. Aim of the research is to provide learning application solutions that have dual functions and are interactive for early childhood targets. An Interactive learning application for the main target of early childhood, where from the learning media studied ranging from Class Dojo, Whatsapp, Google meet, Youtube, Worksheets, and email, Class dojo which received high votes from 70 respondents by getting 72% results became findings study. This dojo class application can be a recommendation for educators' learning media because it has complete features and can be improved communication between educators and guardians of students through the additional contact feature of the student guardian group of the dojo application.

Abstract

Previous research to diagnose problems in Javanese language teaching was not well organized. As a result, there was no adequate formulation of recommendations for educational policies. This research was conducted to overcome this weakness. Thus the objectives of this research were: (a) to reveal trends in Javanese language teaching problems in the last 10 years, (b) to explain the causes of these problems, and (c) to develop recommendations for solving the problems. Using literature review design, this research examines 32 empirical studies on the problem of teaching Javanese. The literature that meets the criteria is analyzed thematically-qualitatively. The findings of this research reveal three categories of problems, namely: managerial, individual-social, and instructional. By tracing the sequences, the causes of the series of trouble are the managerial problem, such as curriculum design, teacher competencies, and the quality of teaching materials. Curriculum design issues, for example, affect minimum standards of achievement. Likewise, the problem of teacher competence affects the use of methods and media selection, which has an impact on motivation, attention, and learning achievement. This prevalence occurred in almost all research locations (Central Java, Special Region of Yogyakarta, and East Java). Especially in Central Java and East Java, individual-social issues are also very influential concerning students' dialect, culture, and ethnicity. In conclusion, complexity of Javanese teaching issues in the last 10 years come from managerial aspect. As part of the conclusion, this research presents academic contribution for scholars and stakeholders by proposing four eligible recommendations related to the development of teacher competencies and the granting of authority to developers of teaching materials (and curriculum) at a lower level.

Abstract

Education partnerships (EP) between local education authorities (LEAs) and universities including teacher training institutes (LPTK) are seen as sine qua non to improve and develop the service and quality of education. EP is one key strategy to leverage education improvement initiatives in the current education reform and decentralisation. This paper presents the description of EP that exists between Makassar State University as LPTK and all LEAs in the province of South Sulawesi as well as to see the constraints and needs for partnerships in developing and improving education services and quality at local level. A quantitative method by using survey design was employed. A total population sampling was applied to 24 LEAs in the province of South Sulawesi who completed a 21-item questionnaire regarding the research variables. LEA in general have positive perception and attitude towards the importance and power of EP in their efforts to develop and improve education in their regions. The findings reveal EP between LEAs and LPTK have existed and manifested in various education improvement activities. However, there is a discrepancy between the actual needs of LEAs and the existing activities/programs in the current EP. In conclusion, EP is a promising strategy for education improvement, but it is undeveloped in its process and implementation.

Abstract

This study aims to develop local content reading books for the history of Wajo in an effort to add insight for educators and students from aspects of local history in Wajo Regency. The development of reading books follows 3 (three) stages from 4 (four) stages of development in the Four D development model. The research subjects consisted of validators as media experts and material experts, two history teachers as practitioners, and 60 students as a test subject. Data collection techniques used questionnaires and interviews, which were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The results of the study showed that: students needed interesting history learning and motivated students to learn more about history so there was a need for reading books that support learning the history of local content in the Wajo Region. Local history was seen as more interesting because it was more contextual than national history. The development of teaching material for the history of Wajo was realized into a digital book (e-book) through the stages of validation and testing to determine the level of practicality. The validity of reading books was carried out by validation by teaching material experts, media experts and Wajo historians. The practicality of this reading book reaches 75.22% in the good category so that it is suitable for use and does not need revision.

Abstract

The dichotomy of retention versus promotion in education is persistent. It is a high stake decision teachers, administrators, and policymakers have to make. This article critically reviewed the die-hard retention factors and looked at alternative ways to deal with them. It emphasizes that the approach to repeating grades cannot be taken frivolously. Teachers, administrators, and policy makers' decisions will not only have life-long effects for the individuals upon whom they are placed, but they will undoubtedly affect the future societies as a whole. This article suggested that both teachers and administrators have the vital and deciding power to elect which approach to take, contextualizing curricula and professional development training sensitive to grade retention issues. Educational administrators and teachers must have the insight to recognize the failures and the courage to accept new ways to deal with old problems.
