Concept: Community Concern for English Pedagogy and Teaching is a blind peer-reviewed and open-accessed journal which welcomes both local and global scientists to share and raise principled approach to research on English language teaching and learning. Contribution in such areas of linguistics, language in literature, language in tourism, art, and culture are also welcomed (more on focus&scope). This journal is published twice a year in June and December, with ISSN 2337-8735 (Print) and ISSN 2337-8735 (Online). Only sent manuscripts that followed the guidelines will be proccessed. Submitted papers will initially be reviewed by editors and for further review will be done by reviewers.

Abstract

The main problem of the recent study is how the concept of English teacher Continuing Professional Development is reviewed from Everett Rogers’ Innovation Diffusion Theory. So, the research aimed at finding the review of the Innovation Diffusion Theory of Rogers toward the concept of Continuing Professional Development of English teachers in Indonesia. This study employed library research as the method and the researcher himself as the instrument to collect data deriving from books as a primer resource and ministry regulation and journal articles as secondary resources. It was conducted through several stages ranging from selecting topics based on the problem; exploring information related to the topic; determining research focus; reading the books, regulations and articles as data resources; recording what was found as research data; and, processing the recorded data. Data were analyzed through induction and interpretation. The result showed that teacher continuing professional development is an implementation of innovation diffusion. It forms a cycle or an endless chain, in which, firstly, innovative work is invented and adopted by innovative teachers; next, it is reported, reflected and published in the form of scientific book, paper or article; then, the scientific work is presented in functional or technical education and training or teacher collective activity as a channel of communication with early adopter teachers; and, the adopter teachers are inspired to make another innovation. Abstract

This study focuses on the analyze the generic structures and language features the editorials of the Jakarta Post to classify the type of exposition text and to know the appropriateness of being teaching material examples in studying a kind of text types. As the subject, six of editorials of the Jakarta Post published in August, 2020 were chosen randomly. The object is the generic structures of the editorials. Then, documentation is used as a technique of data collection to be analyzed and classified by using a book entitled “Text Types” by Mark and Kathryn, and a book entitled “English for Social Purpose” by Jenny Hammond to determine the appropriateness to be teaching material of genre. The results showed each editorial of the Jakarta Post consist of three generic structures, (1) thesis that introduces the topic, (2) series of arguments, (3) Summing up or recommendation as a conclusion that restate editorial writer’s point of view. Based on the features of the generic structures the two editorials belong to Hortatory Text and the rest belong to Analytic Text. All of the editorials also contain four features of a good argument, (1) clearly expressing point of view, (2) using reasons to support the argument, (3) using evidence to prove the argument, (4) showing cause and effect (conclusion) and appropriate to be teaching material. Abstract

The objectives of the study are to describe and analyze the types of presupposition and the belief of those candidates. This study utilizes qualitative descriptive method. The writer picked archive document analysis research procedure in breaking down the information. This research applied the types of presupposition by Yule (1996) and Belief by Van Dijk (1998). The analysis showed that there are six types of presuppositions such as: Existential, Factive, Lexical, Structural, Non-Factive and Counter-Factual Presupposition. When delivering their belief, both candidates using conjunction, context, coherence and also cohesive. First candidate’s belief, Hillary Clinton, showed her personal beliefs because Hillary knew everything how to be a president, how to lead the country, how to work with other country and how to get new jobs to make American be better because Hillary had sufficient experience. Apart from that, Hillary takes the name of President Obama to strengthen the belief that all people have more confidence in her because she presents the facts in accordance with the actual situation. While, the second candidate, Donald Trump examines social beliefs because he explores what happens to their country, including the greatest financial crisis. Donald claims of his own great deeds as a result that had given birth certificates for president. Besides, Donald also claimed that Hillary who had experience as the secretary of the state was not so astute in leading this country and it was evident from the phenomenon occur, many failures made by the present government that making a loss for the country. Abstract

This study used weblog to improve the students’ writing skill and took the second-grade students at junior high school Sentosa Bhakti Baturaja. Then, to take the data, the reserchers used the pre-experimental design. The objective was to find out whether there was any significantly effective to improve students in writing skill by the use weblog to the eighth-grade student of SMP Sentosa Bhakti Baturaja. This study took VIII.B that consisted of 18 students as the sample by applying cluster random sampling. The data was collected by using test. The test was in from of writing test. The data obtained through test and analysis was done by using statistical analysis (paired sample t-test). The result it was found the mean score of pretests was 50 and the mean score of posttests was 73,55. Based on the data analysis the researcher concluded there was significantly effective to use weblog to improve students writing skill descriptive text at SMP Sentosa Bhakti Baturaja before and after treatment. Since, the sig. (2-tailed) =0.000 less than significant level (?=0.05), the writers concludes that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. It means that there is significant effect in using a weblog to improve students writing skill at SMP Sentosa Bhakti Baturaja. Keywords: writing skill; weblog; descriptive text

Abstract

This study aimed to find out EFL students’ speaking ability in a descriptive text. This research was a descriptive survey. The participants were chosen by using cluster random sampling technique where there were twenty students at the eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 4 OKU. The data were collected through oral test in the form of online test and telephone survey. WhatsApp application was used as an online platform in data collection. The result of the study showed that the total of students’ score was 1142 and mean of the students’ score was 57,1. There were 1 student (5%) who gains score 80-100 in very good criteria, 2 students (10%) who gain score 66-79 in good criteria, 10 students (50%) who gain score 56-65 in enough criteria, 5 students (25%) who gain score 46-55 in low criteria, and 2 students (10%) got score 45 in fail criteria. Based on the data, there were only 13 students (65%) who passed the students’ speaking ability. In conclusion, the frequency of criteria of students’ speaking ability is in enough criteria.
