Abstract

This research is motivated by the phenomenon of religious diversity among Generation Z students who live amidst the development of digital technology, rapid information flow, and increasingly plural campus social dynamics. The main issue in this research is how Generation Z students understand, interpret, and express their religion in a digital era that often leads to overlapping religious information. The aim of this research is to describe the forms of religiousness among Generation Z students and to uncover the factors influencing it, both from the digital environment and the campus environment. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a phenomenological method, focusing on the subjective experiences of students in practicing their religiousness. Data is obtained through in-depth interviews with several students from the Religious Studies Program, light observation, and literature studies. The phenomenological approach is used to understand the meanings of religiousness as experienced directly by the students without making normative judgments, allowing the researcher to capture their patterns of religious commitment clearly and authentically. Research findings indicate that the religiousness of Generation Z students is adaptive, selective, and reflective. Social media has become one of the main sources of religious knowledge, but it also presents challenges in the form of information.Non-credible religiosity. On the other hand, the campus environment plays a significant role in shaping moderate, inclusive, and critical religious attitudes through scientific dialogue and cross-background interactions. Overall, the research results affirm that the religiosity of Generation Z develops through a combination of digital experiences and social experiences on campus, thus forming a dynamic pattern of religiosity that meets the demands of the times.

Abstract

Thesis,This study aims to reveal the meaning of symbols in the process of acculturation between Malay and Chinese Islamic cultures in the architecture of the Old Mosque on Gang Bengkok Street in Medan, as well as to understand how these symbols are interpreted by the community and Generation Z. The main issue examined is how architectural elements resulting from the encounter between these two cultures function as signs and form meaning at the denotative, connotative, and mythical levels according to Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method through in depth interviews, field observations, and documentation, which are then analyzed using Barthes' semiotic framework. The results show that architectural elements such as temple style roofs, hanging bee ornaments, green and yellow colors, main pillars, and circular motifs form a system of signs that reflect harmony, egalitarianism, and the collective identity of the Malay and Chinese community. The discussion also found that the local community responded positively to this acculturation and turned it into a social myth about cross ethnic harmony, while Generation Z interpreted these symbols as part of a relevant cultural heritage that needs to be preserved. This research confirms that the architecture of the Old Mosque of Gang Bengkok not only functions as a place of worship but also as a representation of a living multicultural narrative that is passed down from generation to generation.

Abstract

The socio-cultural friction experienced by Salafi women often leads to misconceptions about Salafi concepts. This study aims to determine how Salafi women view religious traditions and how they adapt their religious activities to the tide of modernity. This study uses a case study approach with qualitative research. Data collection techniques were carried out through non-participant observation and in-depth interviews. The results show that 1) Salafi women in the Kisaran Mengaji Movement view local religious traditions through a strict categorization between practices that are considered in accordance with the Sunnah and practices that are considered bid'ah, there is a negotiation between Salafi manhaj commitment and social harmony, participation in the Mengaji Movement contributes to the formation of the religious identity of Salafi female congregants, and the dynamics of the relationship between Salafi female congregants and the social environment that still strongly holds on to local traditions; 2) Salafi women in the Kisaran Mengaji Movement adapt religious activities to the tide of modernity by utilizing digital technology to strengthen religious practices, negotiating time between domestic demands, work, and studies, forming a religious-modern lifestyle in public spaces and the world of work, parenting, digital literacy, and control over the tide of modernity
