Abstract

Asceticism, which is often identified as the act of mortification, is an attempt by a Christian to achieve Christlike perfection. In this act of asceticism, they are willing to abandon worldly pleasures and continue to strive for perfection. Asceticism is often associated with monastic practices to evoke behaviors or attitudes such as maintaining speech, restraining the soul, lack of food, seclusion, and limiting needs. The philosophy of contemporary asceticism is more dominant than the application of Max Weber's theory. The purpose of Asceticism was used by Weber as a potential transformation toward the "empowerment of monastic power". Lastly, Weber created Protestant asceticism and monastic revival. Weber drew asceticism from religious discussions of a realistic asceticism, derived from metaphysition. Max Weber's perspective on asceticism, is continuous with the education applied at Satya Wacana Christian University. This type of research is a literature review, the type of data collection is qualitative research, the research method is the study of Max Weber's thought figure, and the data analysis technique uses observation, interviews, and documentation. The result of this research is an indicator of one's success in religion depends on one's success in life in the world. This research uses a qualitative approach, with data processing focused on literature and observation.

Abstract

Pastoral ordination or ordination is a part of the church system that has deep theological meaning. The process of giving (ordination) is not only a church rite or ceremony, but reflects God's unique call for someone to serve as a servant of God in the capacity of a pastor. In Christian theology, this calling and ordination is considered an important part of the true and holy structure of the church, where a pastor is sent to nurture, teach, and guide the congregation towards maturity in the faith. This article explains how ministers of ordained pastors believe that God's calling and election of them is their calling and election as God's servants who serve in the church. To achieve the aim of this article, this article will begin by exploring biblical studies regarding the election and calling of God's servants. This is then continued with a theological discussion about ordination theology and how to contextualize God's servants in pastors in the midst of church services.

Abstract

This article examines the phenomenon of nyantri (studying at pesantren) in the digital era as a manifestation of cultural and religious identity in the context of rapid social change. The purpose of this research is to understand the function of nyantri as a means of preserving and shaping personal and social identity amidst the currents of globalization and the development of digital technology. This research also aims to identify and analyze the personal and social identities of students in the digital era. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative with in-depth interview techniques and participatory observation at Pondok Pesantren Al Ikhsan Beji, Banyumas, Central Java. The research results show that although the pesantren have adapted to technological developments, traditional values remain the main foundation in the process of education and character formation of the students. Students utilize social media and technology to broaden their religious horizons, while still maintaining conventional religious practices. The digital era brings challenges for students in managing change, but it also opens up space for innovation in showcasing their identity. In the digital era, being a student remains relevant as a means of forming a strong identity, despite shifts in the methods and practices used

Abstract

A condition or symptom that often arises in adolescents that needs further attention is social anxiety. This contains the fact that there is a need for guidance, including through psychological stages regarding how taskiyatun nafs intervention is always applied. Especially, how this condition affects the mental and physical in adolescents. This research uses an Islamic psychological approach and how it is relevant to taskiyatun nafs intervention in increasing religiosity. The research method, using qualitative literature review research by collecting and reviewing 11 journals regarding taskiyatun nafs intervention, increasing religiosity, social anxiety disorder in adolescents and the concept of Islamic psychology. The results showed that adolescents with social anxiety have a disorder that occurs in the emotional realm, which is characterized by feelings of fear, or continuous worry, this needs good attention. This stage is in the taskiyatun nafs intervention, namely takhalli, tahalli and tajalli which are stages that can help them develop self-awareness, mental quality, religious coping, quality of life and spiritual awareness. As in Islamic psychology regarding the problematic lives of adolescents, there is a need for in-depth guidance in a holistic healing process so that adolescents can find a way to overcome and manage their social anxiety in a balanced and integrated way.

Abstract

This article discusses two major social conflicts in Indonesia, namely the Ambon Conflict and the Tolikara Conflict, with a focus on analyzing the sources of triggers, the role of religion in the escalation of conflicts, and the efforts made to resolve them. The Ambon conflict was triggered by a clash of beliefs between Muslims and Christians, exacerbated by social stratification, ethnic differences, as well as local political provocation and third parties. Meanwhile, the Tolikara conflict began with tensions between Muslims and Christians that culminated in violence, showing the potential for religion-based horizontal conflict. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with a literature review approach, aiming to describe in depth the characteristics and dynamics of the two conflicts. Data was collected through a literature study of relevant primary and secondary sources. The results show that both conflicts have the same roots, namely inter-religious tensions triggered by social, political and economic factors. The resolution of the conflict in Ambon involved a reconciliation approach and interfaith dialogue, while in Tolikara, despite the resolution efforts, the challenge of building interfaith trust remains a major obstacle.

Abstract

This study investigates the transitory experiences of propaedeutic seminarians and their implications for vocation formation within the Holy Infant Seminary in the Diocese of Pagadian. The inquiry is grounded in the significant understanding of the formative dynamics that occur during the propaedeutic stage, a period foundational to the development of priestly identity yet often underexamined in scholarly discourse. Utilizing the phenomenological approach as delineated by Moustakas (1994), the study engaged a purposive sample of sixth propaedeutic seminarians aged 18 to 23.  The researchers served as the principal instruments of data collection, supported by a semi-structured interview guide. Data were analyzed using Moustakas' method of phenomenological reduction and thematic analysis. The findings reveal that the propaedeutic seminarians' initial understanding of the seminary life was predominantly shaped by idealized perception and indirect knowledge acquired through observation of priests, hearing stories, and engaging with fellow seminarians from their parish. This observation is consistent with Bandura's Social Learning Theory, which posits that individuals construct understanding through observation, imitation, and social interaction prior to direct experience. As the propaedeutic seminarians progressed through the propaedeutic stage, they underwent a transformative and meaningful formation process that enhanced their vocational clarity and personal identity. This transformation was facilitated not only through structured seminary programs but also through sustained interpersonal relationships with seminary formators and fellow seminarians, reinforcing the significance of social learning mechanisms. Furthermore, despite encountering various challenges such as personal challenges and adjustment to seminary life, the propaedeutic seminarians exhibited resilience by employing personal spiritual practices and relying on the seminary community for support systems. These coping strategies underscore the seminary's dual role as both a space of spiritual formation and a social learning environment. Overall, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of the formative processes that underpin priestly development, emphasizing the need for integrative and relational approaches in seminary formation.

Abstract

This study offers ecotheology as an approach that considers the reciprocal relationship between religion and nature. This study attempts to build a dialogue between holy books by examining ecotheological narratives regarding the concept of the environment. This research was conducted to answer several academic questions, namely regarding the concept of ecotheology contained in the Qur'an and the Bible, as well as to examine the comparative patterns of ecotheological narratives in each holy book. The results of this study show that the Qur'an and the Bible both teach compassion for nature through spiritual dimensions and the basis of faith.

Abstract

Environmental crises, such as forest and land fires (karhutla) in Central Kalimantan, pose severe ecological, social, and economic threats, demanding immediate and context-sensitive ethical responses. This study asserts that religion, particularly Islamic ecotheology, plays a critical role in shaping environmental ethics and guiding sustainable practices among Muslim communities. Using a qualitative approach through literature review and media document analysis (2019–2025), the study explores how Islamic teachings can be applied to address these ecological challenges. The findings reveal three main points. First, Islamic environmental ethics highlight human responsibility as khalifah (stewards of the earth) to maintain mizan (balance) and pursue maṣlaḥah (public good), yet these values are not fully reflected in community practices, as land burning persists. Second, Islamic ecotheology has been promoted through fatwas, organizational movements, and eco-education programs, though its impact is limited without strong law enforcement and community participation. Third, integrating Islamic principles with Dayak local wisdom and collaborative governance enhances practical solutions for fire prevention and ecological stewardship. Overall, Islamic ecotheology offers both normative guidance and actionable frameworks, emphasizing the synergy of religion, culture, and policy in mitigating environmental crises in Central Kalimantan.

Abstract

This study argues that the integration of Indonesian cultural values into Qur’anic exegesis can be achieved without compromising the sacredness of the text, as demonstrated in Misbah Musthofa’s Al-Iklīl fī Ma’ānī al-Tanzīl, interpreted through Wilhelm Dilthey’s hermeneutics. The research investigates how Dilthey’s focus on historical understanding, empathy, and cultural context enables Musthofa to interpret Qur’anic verses in a way that incorporates Indonesia’s ethnic diversity, traditions, and customs. The research employs a qualitative method with hermeneutical analysis, covering textual description of the exegesis, interpretation of Indonesian cultural contexts, and evaluation of Dilthey’s principles (Erleben, Verstehen, and Auslegen). Primary data are obtained from Tafsir Al-Iklīl, while secondary data include literature on Indonesian culture and hermeneutic theory. The results show that Musthofa successfully contextualizes Indonesian culture through a holistic interpretation for instance, by connecting Qur’anic verses to social realities during the time of writing, such as his interpretation of Surah Al-Baqarah verse 10 in relation to the Javanese ritual practice of offering sesajen (traditional offerings). This approach enriches Qur’anic interpretation with local dimensions, making it more relevant for Indonesian Muslims. However, a key challenge remains in maintaining a balance between cultural context and the authoritative nature of the Qur’anic text. The study concludes that Dilthey’s hermeneutics offers an effective framework for contextualizing Qur’anic interpretation in Indonesia. It supports inclusive, adaptive readings relevant to contemporary challenges. Future research should examine other regional exegeses.

Abstract

This study analyzes how television da’wah in Indonesia is constructed as part of popular culture through the symbiosis of religion and entertainment. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research examines da’wah programs through observation, content analysis, and literature review. The findings indicate that television da’wah has transformed traditional preaching into mass media communication with a wider audience, especially among urban communities and younger generations. Religious messages are combined with popular entertainment elements such as celebrities, religious music, humor, and modern visualization, making them more accessible. However, the dominance of entertainment also carries the risk of producing a shallow understanding of religion, as entertainment aspects tend to overshadow religious substance.
