Abstract

The development of biohacking within the framework of transhumanism has introduced new forms of bodily modification, such as subdermal magnetic implants, which challenge the boundaries of human existence. Although this phenomenon has been widely examined from technical and social perspectives, ethical analyses based on the thought of Hans Jonas remain limited. This study aims to analyze the ethical problems of biohacking and to assess the limits of technological intervention in the human body through Jonas’s ethics of responsibility. This research employs a qualitative method with a philosophical-normative approach, using literature review and empirical data related to subdermal magnetic implant practices. The findings reveal that biohacking is not merely an issue of individual autonomy but also raises broader ethical concerns, including technological risks and uncertainties, the normalization of body modification, and the shifting understanding of the human body from a biological entity to a technological object. From Jonas’s perspective, such practices demand responsibility for long-term consequences and therefore cannot be justified solely on the basis of individual freedom. The novelty of this study lies in the development of an ethical analysis model of biohacking based on Jonas’s ethics of responsibility, emphasizing the principle of precaution (heuristics of fear) and the sustainability of humanity as key moral considerations. This study concludes that biohacking should be understood as an ethical issue requiring critical reflection to preserve human dignity and future existence.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the limited cross-cultural scholarship linking Western Stoic philosophy with the figure of Yudhishthira in Eastern literature, particularly the Mahabharata. Existing research tends to treat these traditions separately, although Yudhishthira widely regarded as an embodiment of dharma (truth and justice) offers a fertile site for examining the applicability of Stoic virtues in a different cultural and normative horizon. The study aims to identify how central Stoic principles, notably the Dichotomy of Control and Areté (virtue), are reflected in Yudhishthira’s character, and locate points of convergence between Stoic values and traits ascribed to Yudhishthira to assess their relevance as cultural practices. Employing a descriptive qualitative method grounded in comparative textual analysis, the research analyzes passages from the Mahabharata against Stoic ethical concepts. Findings show that Yudhishthira exemplifies three core Stoic virtues justice, courage, and wisdom manifested respectively in his commitment to truth and fairness, his moral steadfastness in warfare and trials, and his prudent deliberation in critical decisions. The study also identifies a notable shortcoming in temperance: during the dice-game episode Yudhishthira wagers the realm, displaying a failure of self-control that undermines Stoic ideals of rational governance of desire. This tension reveals a substantive conflict between Stoic emphases on self-mastery and rationality and the contextual obligations of dharma that govern Yudhishthira’s role as king and moral exemplar. The research contributes to comparative ethics by integrating Eastern and Western perspectives and offers practical grounds for cross-cultural character education. The study connects Stoicism and Dharma to deepen understanding of universal virtues and to propose a framework for integrating them into contemporary curricula.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the contribution of Imam Al-Ghazali's moral education philosophy to the development of character education in a pluralistic social context and contemporary global challenges. Departing from the phenomenon of moral crisis among Indonesia's younger generation, this study highlights the weak integration of ethical and spiritual dimensions in the national education system. The method used is a qualitative approach with literature review as the main technique, analysing Al-Ghazali's major works such as Iḥyā’ ‘Ulūm al-Dīn and verses from the Qur'an related to ethics and education. The results of the analysis show that moral values such as ṣidq (honesty), ‘adālah (justice), raḥmah (compassion), and amānah (responsibility) have universal dimensions and the potential to shape a well-rounded personality, both spiritually and socially. These values can be implemented through spiritual internalisation and moral habituation in the formal education process. This study proposes the Islamisation of the curriculum as a strategic step to integrate Qur’anic values into the national education system. Practical implications include curriculum reformulation, value-based teacher training, and holistic character evaluation. Thus, education based on Al-Ghazali's values not only offers a solution to the moral disorientation of the younger generation but also shapes an inclusive and civilised social order in the face of global challenges

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the representation of the principle of Ahimsa in the thought of Mahatma Gandhi through the character of Desmond Doss in the film Hacksaw Ridge. In Gandhi’s framework, Ahimsa is understood not merely as a prohibition against killing, but as a structure of non-violent ethics grounded in active love, respect for human dignity, and moral courage in the face of conflict. This study employs a philosophical hermeneutic approach to interpret key scenes in the film and to place them in dialogue with Gandhi’s conception of Ahimsa as an ethical praxis. The findings indicate that Desmond Doss represents Ahimsa through an absolute moral commitment to refusing to kill, while simultaneously embodying an active and responsible participation within the context of war. Amid a situation saturated with violence, Doss practices non-violence as an act of rescue and self-sacrifice, thereby challenging the assumption that courage is synonymous with aggression. Philosophically, this representation demonstrates that Ahimsa remains relevant as a transformative ethical horizon in the modern world marked by structural violence and armed conflict. This study affirms that film functions not only as a narrative medium but also as a space of ethical reflection that enables the re-actualization of Ahimsa within contemporary contexts.

Abstract

The urgency of this research is to build cosmopolitan solidarity using a philosophical perspective. This article presents Emmanuel Levinas' philosophy of the face in examining the character of the Good Samaritan and then using it as a principle in building cosmopolitan solidarity. The research method used is a literature review. Emmanuel Levinas initiated a new philosophy, a philosophy for the Other. According to Levinas, the Other is a face that reveals “the infinite” so that it cannot be reduced to any category. He cannot be defined or conceptualized. When faced with the Other, we are required to respond and take responsibility absolutely. In the biblical context, responsibility towards the Other is exemplified by the Good Samaritan in Luke 10:25-37. The results of the study show that cosmopolitan solidarity can be built on the principle of the philosophy of alterity. The figure of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10:25-37 reflects the essence of responsibility for the presence of the Other as a form of cosmopolitan solidarity.

Abstract

The focus of this article's research is to examine in depth the notion of balance in life as reflected in the Confucian philosophical system and Hindu teachings. Using a philosophical and comparative analysis approach, this study seeks to explore how these two major Asian traditions formulate the concept of harmony between humans, the universe, and the cosmic order. In Confucian thought, balance in life is realized through the teachings of Zhōngyōng or the Doctrine of the Middle Way, which emphasizes the importance of moderation, moral order, and ethical relationships between individuals as the foundation for creating social harmony. Meanwhile, from a Hindu perspective, balance in life is expressed through the principles of Dharma and Karma, which guide humans to live in harmony with natural law and their spiritual responsibilities. The results of the study show that although the two have differences in metaphysical and epistemological aspects, both place balance as the core of inner peace and social order. Therefore, this study confirms that Confucian and Hindu values have universal relevance in building the ethics of modern human life facing a moral and spiritual crisis.

Abstract

This study critically examines Tan Malaka’s thought in Madilog as the foundation for an emancipatory philosophy of science that is distinctive and contextual. By analyzing Tan’s three definitions of science—accurate thought, organization of facts, and simplification by generalization—the research constructs a tripartite analytical framework: epistemology, methodology, and abstraction. Through a conceptual analysis and contextual hermeneutic approach, this study demonstrates that Tan’s ideas are not merely an effort toward rational enlightenment but also a strategy for liberating collective reasoning from colonial domination, feudal customs, and religius mysticism. Compared to classical Western epistemology—such as the justified true belief model, Baconian scientific method, and Comtean positivism—Tan’s thought presents an original and practical synthesis. In this framework, knowledge is not only a tool for understanding but also an instrument for action. The study concludes that Tan Malaka’s tripartite method makes a significant contribution to contemporary philosophy of science discourse, particularly in the context of epistemological decolonization, critique of scientific neutrality, and knowledge as transformative praxis.

Abstract

Science (IPA) teachers in public schools face a gap between the Western-based scientific rationality of the curriculum and the value-laden local wisdom (Eastern philosophy) of Indonesian culture. This gap hinders holistic character education. This review article aims to analyze and reconstruct a value education model based on the ethnoscience of Balinese Arak, serving as a synergistic bridge between Eastern and Western philosophies. This study employed a narrative literature review method with purposive selection. 14 articles (2020-2025) from Google Scholar were analyzed using narrative-thematic synthesis. The analysis identifies three findings: (1) Balinese Arak is an Eastern philosophical entity embodying Tri Hita Karana (THK) values and intangible cultural heritage (WBTB) status. (2) It is a Western rational science object involving fermentation-distillation concepts and risk literacy (methanol). (3) The reconstructed pedagogical model successfully combines deductive structures (Eastern) with critical dialogue (Western) through safe, non-alcoholic simulations (salt-water distillation) and regulatory frameworks (Pergub Bali). The ethnoscience model of Balinese Arak proves to be a valid, applicable, and safe synergistic framework for science teachers to teach rational science while contextually instilling character values

Abstract

This study examines the revitalization of the meaning of land as a strategic effort to achieve agrarian justice in Sekadau, West Kalimantan, through a decolonial approach as articulated in the relational philosophy of Armada Riyanto. Within local and indigenous communities, land is not merely understood as an economic asset or a legal object, but as a living space imbued with historical, cultural, social, and spiritual significance. However, the persistence of colonial agrarian structures and the expansion of modern capitalism have substantially reduced this holistic understanding, resulting in unequal access to land, agrarian conflicts, and the marginalization of indigenous communities. A decolonial approach is employed as a critical framework to dismantle the dominance of hegemonic, legal-formalist, and positivist paradigms that overlook the ethical relationship between humans, land, and community. This study adopts a qualitative methodology with a philosophical-hermeneutic approach, analyzing Armada Riyanto’s thought alongside contextual reflections on agrarian realities in Sekadau. The findings indicate that revitalizing the meaning of land through a decolonial perspective constitutes a fundamental prerequisite for the construction of a more just, inclusive, and sustainable agrarian system. By reinterpreting land as a “shared home” and a locus of ethical relations, this approach offers a critical alternative for the development of agrarian policies grounded in human dignity and local wisdom.

Abstract

This article examines Epicurus's claim that death is not bad by analyzing the temporal structure of life that has been overlooked in his argument. Employing methods of argumentative reconstruction, external critique with temporal perspective, and comparative analysis, this study tests Epicurus's axiological foundations within two temporal frameworks: linear and cyclical time. Within the linear framework, through Heidegger's ontology of time, Nagel's deprivation theory, and Gilmore's concept of personal time, it is found that death is bad in a deprivative sense because it precludes the actualization of value, severs personal narrative, and ends the flow of experience that serves as the container for projects and meaning. Within the cyclical framework, through readings of Hindu-Buddhist traditions, Chinese philosophy, and Whitehead's process philosophy, it is found that death is bad as a discontinuity of value participation—a transition from active participation as a subject to passive participation as an object of memory and impact. Both frameworks, despite different ontologies, converge on the same conclusion: death is an objective loss irreducible to mere absence of sensation. The article concludes that Epicurus's claim survives only in a temporal vacuum, and the debate about death's badness is fundamentally a debate about the ontology of time.
