Abstract

This study aims to determine the feasibility and effectiveness of animated videos to improve English reading skills. This study is a research and development (Research and Development) which aims to produce learning media in the form of animated videos that can improve the English reading skills of junior high school students. The development model used is the 4D model, namely define, design, development and dissemination. This study was conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Stabat. The subjects of the study were 32 grade VII students. The object of the study was animated videos. The data collection techniques used were observation, interviews, questionnaires and tests. This study will use analysis techniques, namely (1) analysis of the feasibility of animated videos; (b) analysis of the effectiveness of animated videos. Based on the validation results from material experts, a percentage of 86.78% was obtained which was included in the "feasible" category. While the validation results from media experts showed a higher percentage, namely obtaining a percentage of 94.65% which was included in the "very feasible" category. There has been an increase in the English reading skills of grade VII students at SMP Negeri 1 Stabat. This is proven by the average pretest of 56.6 and the average posttest of 80.6. So the percentage increase is 42.65%. And the average N-gain of students is 0.5535 or 55.35% which is included in the moderate category. This shows that the increase in students' English reading ability after learning is quite significant. Based on the description above, it can be concluded that animated videos to improve English reading ability are feasible and effective for use in SMP Negeri 1 Stabat.

Abstract

This study examines how students in multilingual schools use code-switching when learning and working with English. Drawing on Vygotsky’s Sociocultural theory of language learning, the study surveyed 150 students joined by interviews with 10 English teachers from chosen senior secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. Respondents’ views were gathered using a set of structured questionnaires for students and a standard interview of teachers. The numerical data was looked at using descriptive statistics and the interviews were interpreted through a thematic analysis. According to the findings, using code-switching in moderation while teaching helped learners understand better and take part more, but doing it too often meant they had fewer opportunities to improve their English skills. The report shows that using code-switching in a limited way can help and suggests that immersion methods should be popularized in class alongside respecting many different languages. The study finds that sometimes code-switching helps and other times not, depending on its frequency and the reason for its use. Effective promotion of English language learning depends on strategic routines in multilingual classrooms.

Abstract

This study investigated the multifaceted impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology on environmental sustainability in Abraka Metropolis within Delta State Nigeria. It analyses how AI functions as both a powerful instrument and a potential weapon to impact public comprehension and behavioural participation at the nexus of communication studies and environmental concerns. Rationale by the media ecology theory, a mixed-methods research design necessitates the application of primary and secondary data. The population of the study is Abraka Metropolis residents. A sample of 150 respondents within and around Delta State University, Abraka were tested using a purposive sampling technique to reach experts, while a random sampling technique was used for surveying the public. Data collection methods include the use of questionnaires and interviews. For deeper insight into the subject matter, Key Informant Interviews (KII) were conducted with communication, environmental and AI technology experts within and around Delta State University Abraka. For data analysis, descriptive statistics summarized the analysed data, and the hypothesis was tested with inferential statistics using Spearman Rank on the Software app STATA 15.0 to analyse the data. This study concludes that AI technology creates numerous prospects for environmental sustainability communication, challenges such as deep-fake technology, algorithmic bias, and misleading AI-generated content could undermine public trust in environmental sustainability messages. It is recommended that stakeholders in communication and constituted authorities should strengthen AI literacy, enhance AI regulations, improve AI accessibility, integrate AI with human-led interventions, and encourage ethical AI development to develop both information and engagement regarding the preservation of humanity

Abstract

This study aims to examine the utilization of North Sumatra local culture as a learning resource in learning biology based on 21st century competencies and skills. The research method used was descriptive qualitative with a case study approach, involving observation, interviews with teachers and traditional leaders, and document analysis. The results revealed that local cultural elements such as ethnobotany, traditional agricultural systems, and environmental management wisdom can be effectively integrated into biology materials to improve students' concept understanding, learning motivation, and critical thinking skills. The implementation of local culture-based learning also encourages students' active involvement as well as the preservation of social and ecological values. However, the main challenge lies in the limited competence of teachers and the availability of adequate learning resources. This study recommends the development of local culture-based teaching modules and teacher training to support the sustainability of contextualized and sustainable biology learning. The findings provide an important contribution to the development of learning strategies that integrate local wisdom and 21st century competencies

Abstract

Visually impaired children is a term that refers to people with visual impairments, including children, both totally blind and very limited vision. Based on the results of initial observations and interviews with teachers and principals, it was seen that students were less able/difficult in recognizing Braille writing and one of the factors was because of the limited variation and creativity in using media to improve their writing skills and recognition of Braille writing. This type of research is analytical research. This study used a quasi-experimental plan with a one group pre-test post-test plan, namely measuring variables to groups from the results before and after treatment was given. The data collection technique in this study was through the test method. With the results of the study showing the analysis of the data obtained Zh is 2.05 greater than Zα 5% which is 1.96 so it can be concluded that there is a significant influence of the use of Braille Sound media in improving the literacy skills of blind children at SLB A Karya Murni Medan.
