Abstract

Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) undergoing lifelong hemodialysis often experience declines in quality of life across physical, psychological, social, and environmental domains. The demanding treatment schedule may also lead to fatigue and reduced motivation. Self-efficacy is considered an important factor influencing patients’ ability to adapt to chronic illness. This quantitative study used a descriptive correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The population consisted of 388 patients undergoing hemodialysis, with 80 respondents selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using the WHOQOL-BREF and General Self-Efficacy (GSE) questionnaires. Statistical analysis was performed using the chi-square test. The findings showed a statistically significant relationship between self-efficacy and quality of life (p = 0.001; p < 0.05). Patients with higher self-efficacy tended to report better quality of life across measured domains. Self-efficacy plays a crucial role in shaping patients’ health behaviors and their ability to cope with long-term treatment demands. Strengthening self-efficacy may contribute to improved overall well-being in patients undergoing hemodialysis.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health problem worldwide, with the incidence continuing to increase each year. One of the contributing factors to the high number of TB cases is the limited knowledge and inadequate preventive practices among family members of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the level of knowledge and preventive behaviors regarding pulmonary TB transmission among families of TB patients at the Helvetia Public Health Center, Medan. This study employed a quantitative method using a correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 48 respondents, consisting of family members of TB patients, were selected through purposive sampling. The findings revealed that most respondents had a moderate level of knowledge (54.2%), followed by low knowledge (31.3%) and good knowledge (14.6%). In terms of preventive behaviors, 41.7% of respondents demonstrated moderately good prevention practices, 35.4% showed good practices, and 22.9% had poor preventive behaviors. Statistical analysis using the Chi-Square test showed a p-value of 0.004 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant relationship between the level of knowledge and pulmonary TB transmission prevention behaviors among family members of TB patients. These findings suggest that improving family knowledge may contribute to better prevention practices in reducing TB transmission. Therefore, healthcare workers and community health volunteers are encouraged to strengthen educational interventions related to TB prevention and promote early detection when symptoms of pulmonary TB are identified.

Abstract

Hypertension is a non-communicable disease often referred to as a “silent killer” because it frequently presents without specific symptoms while increasing the risk of severe complications such as stroke and cardiovascular disease. Hypertension management can be conducted through both pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. One potential non-pharmacological intervention is the consumption of star fruit (Averrhoa carambola), which contains potassium, vitamin C, and dietary fiber that may contribute to blood pressure reduction. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of star fruit in reducing blood pressure among patients with hypertension in the working area of Medan Sunggal Public Health Center. This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach. A total of 30 respondents were selected using purposive sampling. The intervention consisted of administering 150 ml of star fruit juice once daily for three consecutive days. Blood pressure measurements were obtained before and after the intervention using a digital sphygmomanometer. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The results demonstrated a reduction in the mean systolic blood pressure from 147 mmHg to 139.33 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure from 93 mmHg to 78 mmHg following the intervention. Statistical analysis using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test revealed significant differences in both systolic (p = 0.000) and diastolic blood pressure (p = 0.008), indicating that star fruit juice had a significant effect on lowering blood pressure among hypertensive patients. In conclusion, star fruit juice was found to be effective in reducing blood pressure and may serve as an alternative non-pharmacological therapy for hypertension management.

Abstract

Hypertension is a non-communicable disease and one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Individuals with a family history of hypertension have a twofold greater risk of developing hypertension compared to those without such a history. The prevalence of hypertension increases with age, and men tend to develop hypertension earlier than women. Successful hypertension control is influenced by patients’ behavior in adhering to treatment, maintaining a healthy diet, engaging in physical activity, and attending regular health check-ups. This study used a descriptive research design with a purposive sampling technique. The research was conducted at Puskesmas Medan Sunggal from March to August 2025. The population consisted of 250 individuals, with a sample of 38 respondents. The results showed that hypertension was more common among women, accounting for 60.52% of respondents. The majority of respondents were aged 50–59 years (50%). Most respondents were employed (65.79%) and had a senior high school/vocational high school education (60.32%). Regarding knowledge about hypertension, most respondents had a good level of knowledge (57.9%). Positive attitudes toward hypertension were found in 71.05% of respondents, while good preventive and management behaviors were demonstrated by 73.68% of respondents. This study is expected to provide useful information for future researchers regarding hypertension. Health workers are also encouraged to further improve education and awareness programs related to the dangers of hypertension.

Abstract

Hypertension is a common health problem among elderly individuals and is often referred to as a silent killer because it may occur without obvious symptoms while increasing the risk of serious complications such as stroke, cardiovascular disease, and kidney failure. Aging causes physiological changes in blood vessels, including decreased arterial elasticity, which contributes to elevated blood pressure. In addition to pharmacological therapy, non-pharmacological interventions are needed to support blood pressure control. One alternative therapy is the use of noni juice (Morinda citrifolia), which contains active compounds such as scopoletin and proxeronine that have vasodilatory effects and may help reduce blood pressure This study is aimed to determine the effect of noni juice administration on blood pressure reduction among elderly patients with hypertension in the working area of Deli Tua Health Center, Deli Tua District, Deli Serdang Regency, in 2026. This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test approach involving an intervention group and a control group. The sample consisted of elderly patients with hypertension who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Blood pressure was measured before and after the intervention using standard measurement tools. The intervention involved administering noni juice twice daily for seven days according to the standard operating procedure. Data analysis included univariate analysis to describe respondent characteristics and blood pressure levels, and bivariate analysis using the Wilcoxon test to determine differences in blood pressure before and after the intervention. The results showed a decrease in blood pressure among elderly patients after consuming noni juice. Statistical analysis revealed a p value of 0.001 (p < 0.05), indicating a statistically significant effect of noni juice administration on blood pressure reduction in elderly patients with hypertension.

Abstract

Chronic kidney failure (CKF) is a condition that causes a gradual and irreversible decline in kidney function, requiring hemodialysis therapy in the end-stage of the disease. One of the problems patients often experience during hemodialysis is pain. The. Quran recitation therapy, which is safe and easy to use, is a non-pharmacological approach to pain management. The purpose of this study was to determine how Al-Qur'an murottal therapy affects the pain intensity of patients suffering from chronic kidney failure and undergoing hemodialysis at Sembiring Deli Tua General Hospital. This study used a quantitative design with a quasi-experimental approach. It used a single group pretest-posttest design. The sampling method was used to select the research sample from 21 respondents. Before and after Al-Qur'an murottal therapy for ±15 minutes, pain intensity was measured using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). The Wilcoxon Signed Rank test was used to analyze univariate and bivariate data. The results showed that Al-Qur'an murottal therapy reduced pain intensity. There was a significant relationship between Al-Qur'an murottal therapy and decreased pain intensity in chronic kidney failure patients undergoing hemodialysis, according to the results of statistical tests, with a p value of 0.001 (p <0.05). This study found that Al-Qur'an murottal therapy significantly reduced the pain intensity of CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis. Therefore, this therapy can be recommended as a non-pharmacological intervention to help reduce pain and improve patient comfort during hemodialysis.
