Abstract

Tafsīr is one of the religious activities in the month of Ramaḍān that do not only sustain the spirituality of the Muslims but also strengthen the socio-moral aspects of their lives. But that do the significance of Ramadan Tafsīr in the Islamic societies cannot be underrated as it has positively impacted the Muslim Ummah in general and Iwo town in particular. It is therefore necessary to expose and document its impacts on the Muslim Ummah in Iwo land with a focus on Iwo town. To achieve this, historical, analytical and phenomenological methods of research had been used. In accounting for the historical background of Iwo and Ramadan Tafsīr in the town, historical method had been employed while analytical method was used in explaining the impact of Ramaḍān Tafsīr on the Muslim Ummah in Iwo town. Phenomenological method was used in relating these impacts to the people of Iwo town so as to determine the extent to which these impacts have taken effects on their lives. The paper discovered that the Impacts cut across the socio-moral and economic as well as spiritual aspects of the Muslims in Iwo town. It also revealed that most of the Mosques where Ramaḍān Tafsīr is done in Iwo town are facing challenges among which are non recording of Tafsīr; not broadcasting it on social media and lacking public address system as the Muffassirun are always talking on top of their voices. The paper concluded by advocating good treatment of the Mufassirūn by the well to do Muslims in the town as well as prompt recording and live broadcasting of the Tafsīr with the intention of wider coverage.

Abstract

The debate over Sharia implementation in democratic countries remains a persistent issue, driven by political, economic, and social challenges that fuel the demand for alternative governance systems. This study examines the discourse through the perspectives of Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na’im, the concept of NKRI Bersyariah (Sharia-based Indonesia), and the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) Civilization Fiqh. Using a library research method, primary and secondary sources were analyzed comparatively to identify key themes and concepts. An-Na’im advocates for a secular state that upholds pluralism and individual freedom, arguing that Sharia should not automatically serve as the basis for state law but must evolve within diverse social and political contexts. In contrast, NKRI Bersyariah is justified through arguments of alignment between Sharia and Pancasila, Indonesia’s Muslim majority, its utility in reducing crime and state expenses, and its role in safeguarding against extreme ideologies. NU’s Civilization Fiqh integrates Sharia with human rights, emphasizing contextually relevant Islamic laws while rejecting the formalization of Sharia as state law to maintain Indonesia’s pluralistic identity. Islamic political parties, including PKB, PKS, and PAN, adopt different approaches to the implementation of Islamic Sharia through legislation, prioritizing electoral gains while navigating Indonesia’s democratic principles, reflecting the complexities of reconciling religious values with a pluralistic and democratic society.

Abstract

This study analyzes Masnun Tahir’s thoughts on Nationalist fiqh as a solution to the challenges of pluralism, intolerance, and radicalism in Indonesia. Masnun Tahir proposes a paradigm of Nationalist fiqh that integrates Islamic values with the multicultural context of Indonesian nationhood. The study employs Jurgen Habermas’s Critical Hermeneutics theory as an analytical framework to explore the transformative dimensions of this thought, encompassing interfaith dialogue, education, and the strategic role of religious scholars (ulama) in fostering social harmony. Using a library research methodology and textual analysis, this research examines Masnun Tahir’s works and the relevance of his ideas in the social context. The findings indicate that Masnun Tahir’s Nationalist fiqh offers a comprehensive approach that balances Islamic teachings with national values, positioning pluralism as a strength to enhance unity. This paradigm encourages the application of contextual Islamic law that respects local values and aligns with societal needs. Interfaith dialogue emerges as a central pillar of this paradigm, functioning as a tool to strengthen social integration and minimize conflicts arising from differences in belief. Education based on Nationalist fiqh is also identified as a key element in shaping a tolerant and patriotic generation. The analysis reveals that the paradigm of Nationalist fiqh is not merely normative but also transformative, providing practical solutions to the challenges of intolerance and radicalism. However, its implementation faces obstacles, including social resistance and the need for cross-sectoral support. With inclusive and sustainable strategies, Nationalist fiqh holds significant potential as an instrument for inclusive social transformation in Indonesia. This study contributes to the enrichment of theoretical discourse and offers a new perspective on bridging religion and nationhood in the Indonesian context.

This research addresses religious and community diversity to prevent exclusive religious expression in multireligious communities in Mojokerto, East Java, especially in Pohjejer Village. The village has a diverse social and religious background, with the majority of the population adhering to Islam, but there are also small groups of followers of other religions. The informants in this study consisted of 15 individuals selected purposively, including religious leaders, community leaders, members of religious organisations, and villagers involved in daily interfaith interactions. They were selected based on their central role in the social and religious dynamics of the village and their influence on the existing diversity. This study identifies factors that can trigger exclusive religious expression and provides insights into how interactions between religious communities can be managed to minimise potential conflicts. The findings show that an inclusive approach, interfaith education, and interfaith dialogue are key to maintaining harmony. The new contribution of this study is an emphasis on the importance of a more holistic understanding of social interaction in the context of Indonesia’s heterogeneous Islamic society, which can be an essential reference in Islamic studies related to the management of diversity in regions with similar characteristics.
