Abstract

The main objectives of this study are to map and analyze the multiculturalism pattern in Muslim civilization history during the period. Analyses are developed with historical and socio-cultural perspectives. Several patterns of multiculturalism in Islamic civilization are found: Firstly, during the Prophet and al-Khulafa ar-Rasyidun era, Islam–as a doctrine and religion system–had accomodative patterns to the cultural form in al-'ashabiyyah al-qabaliyyah tradition and began to perform as Arabic culture-based civilization. Secondly, during the Daulah Umayyah era, disregarding that the civilization was developed using Arabic politics, the policies regarding Islamic expansion encouraged acculturation of Arabic-Muslim and non-Arabic or non-Muslim communities, leading to the multiculturalism in Islam at that time. Finally, during the Daulah Abbasiyah era, multiculturalism became more obvious as a pattern of Islamic civilization, indicated by the roles of non-Arabic cultures in Islamic civilization development.

Abstract

A few months ago the USA was overcome by nationwide protests that continue to this day; these protests expanded internationally. The protests were sparked by the death of George Floyd, an unconvict African-American man. The incident indicates that racism is still prevalent. This article shall argue that Islam condemns racism and that it came with a plan to end slavery, which was very popular in pre-Islamic days and also to end racist action in all its forms. According to Islamic teaching, racism should have disappeared fourteen centuries ago. This article shall present Qur’anic verses and Prophetic hadith to the effect that in Islam all people are supposed to live in harmony and equality. There should be no discrimination on bases of race, money, skin color or religious believes.

Abstract

Painting or drawing is a penchant for some humans, especially pictures or paintings that are seen as beautiful as images of humans, animals, plants, and others. However, on the other hand it becomes a problem if the painting is worshiped or cultured. This paper seeks to present the elasticity of the understanding of the hadith of M. Syuhudi Islam concerning threats to painters by using library research and descriptive-analysis approaches from the sociological aspects of knowledge and historical-sociological. The findings show the elasticity of M. Syuhudi Ismail in understanding the hadith of painting. Hadith of painting had been understood temporally and locally which occurred when the hadith was delivered by Rasulullah when the new societies came out of idolatry worshiping idols or statues including animate images so that hadiths appeared on the prohibition of painting or drawing because they feared they would do the same again. According to Syuhudi Ismail, the prohibition was seen from ‘illah al-hukm (legal cause), namely worshiping and culturing paintings or drawings so that in today's context it is permissible for painters to aim not to be worshiped or cultured but to be used as a field of economic endeavors to fulfill everyday life.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the thought of an orientalist–‘Abdallah ‘Abd al-Fadi–which states that the Qur’an has no perfection. He poured his thoughts into a book Is The Qur’an Infallible? In his book, he states that the Qur’an contains 22 Arabic syntax errors. His thoughts effected in many Muslims doubtful towards the authenticity of the Qur’an. In addition, non-Muslims also increasingly undermine the authenticity of it. Considering that this issue is a matter that must be addressed, the researcher will research further in this case. The purpose of this study is to refute the thoughts of ‘Abdallah ‘Abd al-Fadi and to maintain the purity, image, and authenticity of the Qur’an. The research method used in this research is descriptive analysis with the qualitative approach. The finding of this research indicates that ‘Abdallah ‘Abd al-Fadi’s thoughts on Qur’anic verses are wrong and this is due to his lack of understanding of Arabic theories especially the theories of Arabic syntax.
