Abstract

The interconnected dynamics of agricultural productivity and gender equity present complex challenges and opportunities for food security in agrarian regions. In Indonesia, West Java is a leading rice producer, yet food security disparities persist, highlighting the need to examine both production capacity and gender development. This study analyzes the impact of rice harvested area and the Gender Development Index (GDI) on food security across 27 districts/cities in West Java from 2018 to 2022. Using panel data and fixed-effects regression, the study evaluates both additive and interaction effects while controlling for GDP per capita, poverty, and population. The interaction model explains substantial variation (R² = 0.721). Rice harvested area (β = 0.024) and GDI (β = 30.874) each positively influence food security. The interaction term (β = 0.087) confirms that higher gender development strengthens the positive impact of agricultural production. Marginal analysis indicates that increases in rice production have stronger effects in high-GDI regions, where women have greater access to resources and economic opportunities. Conversely, poverty negatively affects food security (β = −0.281), limiting household access to food regardless of production levels. These findings suggest that uniform agricultural policies are insufficient. High-GDI regions should prioritize value-chain development and income diversification, while low-GDI regions require simultaneous investment in agricultural capacity and women’s empowerment. Achieving equitable and sustainable food security requires integrated policies that balance agricultural development with gender equality

Abstract

This study aims to analyze research trends and formulate policy strategies for homeless mobility in accessing basic services sustainably in public spaces. Existing systematic reviews are generally partial, focusing only on clinical health aspects or housing availability issues. However, there are very few comprehensive studies examining the mobility of the homeless in accessing basic services in public spaces. This study used a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method with data from Scopus filtered through the PRISMA protocol, resulting in 25 relevant articles being selected. Bibliometric analysis was conducted using VOSviewer and RStudio (Bibliometrix), followed by thematic analysis for policy synthesis. The results indicate a steady annual growth rate of 8.01% from 2016 to 2025, in international collaboration remains low (8%), reflecting a localized research focus. The results show fluctuations in scientific production with a significant peak in 2022, but reveal a knowledge gap (research gap) where the integration of public space and mobility remains a minor (niche) theme compared to health issues. The policy strategies are divided thematically into social, environmental, educational, and economic aspects. This study recommends more concrete practical implications, including the provision of inclusive public transportation, elimination of exclusionary architecture, and simplification of bureaucracy for accessing basic services. In conclusion, city policy must shift from mere order-based management to fulfilling the right to the city through cross-sector collaboration that ensures the welfare of vulnerable groups in the city

Abstract

Floods are a dominant hydrometeorological disaster in Indonesia, requiring early preparedness from the students. However, observations  show a gap between the high risk of flooding in the students' environment and their low spatial thinking skills and preparedness attitudes due to the dominance of conventional learning. This study aims to examine the effect of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model based on contextual problems on students' spatial thinking skills and preparedness attitudes towards flood disasters. This study used a quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group design, with two classes as research subjects, namely the experimental class and the control class. The data collection instruments used were a validated spatial thinking ability test and preparedness attitude questionnaire. Data analysis used the Independent Sample T-Test and Mann- Whitney U tests. The results showed that the PBL model had a significant effect on spatial thinking ability (p 0.001), with a large effect category (d = 1.045). In addition, PBL also had a significant effect on disaster preparedness attitudes (0 = 0.026), with a medium effect size (r = 0.306), as indicated by a change in category from "ready" to "very ready." This study proves that the integration of contextual flood problems in PBL syntax effectively stimulates students' spatial visualization and facilitates the internalization of risks that shape disaster response character. This study contributes to the development of geography learning strategies on disaster preparedness attitudes and emphasizes their application for a young generation that is resilient in facing hydrometeorological disasters

Abstract

Local environments provide meaningful learning resources for geography education by enabling students to connect geographic concepts with real-world spatial phenomena. This study examines the spatial distribution of environmental learning resources, their utilization in geography instruction, and the teaching methods applied at State Senior High School 1 Purwokerto. The study employed a mixed-methods design that integrated GIS-based spatial analysis with an exploration of teachers’ instructional practices and experiences. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis, and were analyzed using an interactive qualitative model combined with nearest neighbor analysis in ArcGIS 10.4. The findings identified 11 main learning resource locations across Banyumas Regency representing natural, social, and cultural environments. These locations were found to have a random spatial distribution; however, their use in instruction was determined mainly by relevance to learning materials, accessibility, and safety rather than geographic proximity. Teachers utilized the environment through observation, interviews, environmental analysis, basic mapping activities, and disaster simulation. The instructional approaches included field study, Project-Based Learning, Problem-Based Learning, and discovery learning, all of which promoted active, collaborative, reflective, and scientific learning. The study highlights the importance of integrating spatial analysis and environment-based pedagogy in developing contextual geography learning resources at the secondary school level

Abstract

Urban flooding in rapidly urbanizing coastal cities increasingly exceeds the capacity of conventional monitoring and response systems to capture its localized, time-sensitive, and socially differentiated impacts. This study examines the potential of social sensing as a complementary approach for understanding urban flooding as a socio-spatial process shaped by everyday experiences, digital participation, and governance practices, with an empirical focus on Makassar City, Indonesia. Drawing on citizen-generated Instagram content collected between January 2019 and March 2024  (retained posts: n = [N]; geotagged posts used for spatial analysis: [P%]), the research integrates spatial, temporal, and qualitative signals derived from geotagged locations, posting timestamps, and visual–narrative materials to analyze flood dynamics. Social sensing outputs are triangulated with institutional flood information (incident logs, response records, and hazard layers) to assess correspondence, gaps, and governance relevance. The findings indicate that social sensing captures impact-oriented flood information in locations where inundation disrupts everyday urban activities, provides early temporal signals associated with flood onset and escalation, and reveals qualitative dimensions of lived flood experience that are not represented in hydrological or administrative data alone. While spatial and temporal patterns broadly align with institutional records, citizen-generated reports can precede formal documentation and highlight highly localized effects (e.g., temporary road closures or neighborhood-scale ponding) that remain underreported in official datasets. Methodologically, the study advances a human-centered analytical framework that bridges digital geographic analysis with qualitative interpretation, prioritizing transparency, interpretability, and ethical handling of publicly available social media data (e.g., de-identification and quotation minimization). From a governance perspective, the results demonstrate the value of integrating social sensing into hybrid urban flood governance to support more adaptive, context-sensitive, and inclusive approaches to flood risk management.

Abstract

This study examines the spatial transformation of agrarian cultural tourism in the Muria Volcano Region, Indonesia, through the integration of markerless augmented reality (MAR) and cross-generational community empowerment. Using a mixed-methods design, the research combines a quantitative survey of 150 agritourism-related micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) with qualitative data derived from focus group discussions, field observations, and an intensive empowerment and training programme involving a purposive subset of 35 MSME participants representing different generations. Quantitative analysis using PLS-SEM and IPMA explores the relationships between agrarian cultural values, business financial management, digital technology adoption, and profitability, while qualitative insights are used to interpret socio-spatial dynamics, learning processes, and local practices shaped through empowerment activities. The findings indicate that agrarian cultural values and digital technology adoption mediate how local communities engage with tourism spaces, while cross-generational empowerment enhances digital readiness and interpretive capacity. MAR contributes to spatial storytelling and visitor engagement by enabling interactive representations of cultural landscapes, although its implementation remains constrained by uneven digital skills and infrastructure. This study contributes to social and tourism geography by demonstrating how digital spatial media can support community empowerment and sustainable tourism development in peripheral volcanic landscapes. It also offers insights for geography education through its emphasis on spatial representation, place-based learning, and technology-mediated understanding of cultural landscapes in tourism contexts.

Abstract

Institutionalization, understood as the spatially embedded process of translating ideas into formalized programs, governance arrangements and practices, that critical in strengthening community resilience, particularly within the context of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). Despite growing global research in DRR, the geographic dimensions of community institutionalization and its influence in local-level disaster governance remained underexplored. This study adopted a geographic perspective to examine global patterns and regional disparities in research in DRR institutionalizational governance. A systematic review combined with Bibliometric Analysis (BA) was conducted to map the global research lanscape. Using VOSviewer, 41 peer-reviewed journal articles indexed in Scopus were analyzed to identify key trends, thematic clusters, and geographic concentrations of scholarship. The findings revealed that while scholarly interest spans multiple continents, research output was disproportionately concentrated in high-income or more developed countries. Regions with high disaster exposure, particularly Asia and Africa remain underrepresented in international peer-reviewed literature. This imbalance does not reflect an absence of DRR practices in these regions; rather, it stems from structural, historical, and institutional differences affecting research production, publication and visibility. Many Asian and African DRR initiatives are robust in practices but often documented in grey literature, government reports, or local-language publications rather than peer-reviewed journals. As a result, critical dimensions of community institutionalization such as local governance structures, decision-making processes, and institutional sustainability remain underexamined, due to the dominance of technical and engineering-focused research. The complexity of community institutions, limited social-science funding, and political sensitivities further constrain scholarly attention. This study highlighted the need for inclusive, context-sensitive and geographically grounded research approaches alongside sustained investment in local research capacity for enhancing DRR effectiveness and sustainable adaptive resilience.

Abstract

The Muaro Jambi Temple Compound, recognized as one of the most extensive cultural heritage sites in Southeast Asia, faces numerous threats stemming from both natural phenomena and anthropogenic activities. This study aims to systematically identify and assess potential risks, determine their severity and probability, and propose effective risk management strategies to support the site's long-term conservation. Utilizing the HIRADC (Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, and Determining Control) framework, the research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative analyses supported by Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and SPSS-based statistical tools. The findings highlight five major risks: coal dust pollution, climate-induced flooding, artifact theft, vandalism, and inadequate conservation funding. Among these, coal dust pollution is identified as the most critical threat due to its high frequency and substantial impact on both the structural integrity of the temple complex and surrounding community health. The study proposes mitigation strategies including strengthened industrial regulations, improved drainage infrastructure, and active community engagement in heritage preservation efforts. This research underscores the necessity of an integrated and collaborative risk management approach to safeguard cultural heritage assets like the Muaro Jambi Temple Compound in the face of escalating environmental and socio-economic pressures

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of implementing an encyclopedia-based case study learning model on students’ critical thinking and collaboration skills in geography learning within the Society 5.0 era. Although contemporary educational demands require geography learning models that strengthen these competencies, classroom practices remain largely dominated by conventional approaches that do not optimally support their development. Geography education plays a strategic role in responding to environmental and social challenges, highlighting the need for innovative and contextual learning models. This study employed a quasi-experimental method using a pretest–posttest control group design. The participants consisted of 76 senior high school students, divided into an experimental class (n = 38) and a control class (n = 38). The experimental group implemented the encyclopedia-based case study model, while the control group received conventional instruction. Data were collected using a critical thinking skills test and a 45-item Likert-scale collaboration questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted using ANCOVA, with pretest scores treated as covariates, after meeting assumptions of normality, homogeneity of variance, and homogeneity of regression slopes. The results indicate that, after controlling for students’ initial abilities, there were significant differences between the experimental and control groups in critical thinking skills (p 0.05; ηp² = 0.302) and collaboration skills (p 0.05). These findings demonstrate that the encyclopedia-based case study learning model is effective in enhancing students’ higher-order thinking and collaboration skills and is highly relevant for implementation in geography education in the Society 5.0 era.

Abstract

Students' knowledge of wetland concepts is quite diverse due to the very complex presentation of wetland material. This is one of the primary challenges in the geography learning process in the era of Education 4.0, particularly in the Regional Development Geography course. Learning components that incorporate the use of learning resources and the selection of appropriate learning strategies, integrated with technology, play a crucial role in improving and maintaining students' knowledge in the long term. To address this challenge, it is essential to develop a digital book on wetlands that integrates Reading-Questioning-Answering RQA). The purpose of this study was to measure the effectiveness of the E-Wetland Book Integrated RQA in improving wetland area development knowledge among students at Lambung Mangkurat University. The subjects were 30 students taking the Regional Development Geography course in the Geography Education Study Program at Lambung Mangkurat University, as all students had relatively similar reading and cognitive literacy skills. This study employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest-only design. The analysis used a paired sample t-test. The e-wetland book, which integrates RQA, enables students to learn about wetland development related to tourism, settlements, transportation, and agriculture in South Kalimantan. The implementation of the e-wetland book, integrated with RQA during classroom learning activities, can enhance students' knowledge, critical and creative thinking skills, speaking abilities, and overall learning outcomes. The implications of developing an e-wetland book integrated with RQA can provide an alternative approach to digital learning resources and effective learning strategies, thus improving student learning outcomes and the quality of learning in the digital era.
