Abstract

This article explores the role of the Qur'an in perpetuating the rejection of female presidential candidates in the context of Presidential Elections in Indonesia from 2004 - 2024. To date, Indonesia has not had a female president directly elected by the people. In 2004, Megawati Soekarno Putri became the first woman to run for president. There was both support and rejection of Megawati's candidacy. The rejection response by some groups was based on the teachings of Islam. The rejection of women's leadership as president was based on the Qur'an surah An-Nisa verse 34. After the 2004 and 2009 presidential elections, there were no presidential candidates from among women. The use of the Qur'anic verse to reject a female president is a latent problem even though there are no female presidential candidates in the presidential elections in Indonesia. This means that the use of the Qur'an to reject a female president in Indonesia could still happen in the future. The method used is a literature study with qualitative analysis by utilising primary sources on presidential elections and female presidential candidates. In this article, three discussions will be discussed. First, the use of the Qur'an to reject women's leadership in the presidential election in Indonesia. Second, the rejection of the president with the legitimacy of the Qur'an is a latent problem of the future. Third, how does the alternative narrative of al-Qur'an support women's leadership in the realm of presidential elections?

Abstract

Islam, as a comprehensive and universal way of life, governs not only worship but also politics, statehood, economics, and social systems. Al-Maududi proposed an Islamic state based on the Qur’an, Sunnah, and practices of the companions, advocating for a caliphate system over a monarchy. He argued that the decline of Islamic politics began with the abandonment of the Khilafah system, emphasizing that true sovereignty belongs to God, with humans as executors of God’s will. A government enforcing God’s rules commands the people’s obedience. Al-Maududi outlined three state institutions: executive, legislative, and judiciary, functioning independently. The head of state, also the executive leader, must consult the Shura Council but isn’t bound by its majority opinion. The people must monitor the head of state, who can be dismissed if driven by personal desires. To prevent dictatorship, the head of state’s powers should be administratively limited, though Al-Maududi did not specify the term of office. In legislative elections, self-nomination is discouraged as it undermines political and social morale, contrary to Islamic law. Al-Maududi also opposed Muslim women holding key government positions or sitting in the Shura Council and People’s Council. Establishing an Islamic state is deemed essential to implement Allah’s commands in all life aspects.

Abstract

Minangkabau is one of the cultures or ethnic groups in Indonesia that remains a popular subject for research from both cultural and religious perspectives. This is understandable given that the traditions within Minangkabau culture offer intriguing aspects for scholars to analyse. For instance, the matriarchal system in Minangkabau presents a paradox between the matrilineal perspective in culture and the patrilineal perspective in religion, showcasing the Minangkabau community's efforts to accommodate and reconcile cultural and religious approaches. This paper aims to explore the social relations within the Minangkabau community from Hamka's perspective as presented in Tafsir Al-Azhar. This study falls into the category of literary research with a qualitative approach. The data sources for this research are drawn from various library references, including the Tafsir Al-Azhar as the primary source and other related books as secondary sources. The data analysis method employed is content analysis. This research indicates that Hamka has a unique reading of social relations in Minangkabau, highlighting the distinctive influence of matriarchal/matrilineal practices on the social order of Minangkabau society. The explanation of social relations in Minangkabau exists in his tafsir as a tool to provide analogies or explanations of the meaning of verses, making them easier for readers to understand, considering that Tafsir predominantly has a social orientation.

Abstract

This paper discusses the leadership relations between men and women in Islam, especially in the context of qiwāmah based on the views of Muhammad Sa'id Ramadhān al-Būthī in the book al-Mar'ah bain Thughyān al-Nidzām al-Gharbiy wa Lathā'if al-Tasyri' al-Rabbaniy. The purpose of this study is to examine in depth the meaning of qiwāmah according to al-Būthī and how this concept is applied in the relationship between husband and wife. This study uses a qualitative method by analysing the main text of the book, as well as other literature related to the issue of qiwāmah. With a moderate and comprehensive tafsir approach, al-Būthī interprets 'qiwāmah' as the husband's responsibility to protect and nurture the family, not domination over the wife. The husband's leadership is based on his physical advantages and his role as breadwinner, but without demeaning the wife. In essence, wives still have the right to work and contribute economically as long as the work does not burden them.

Abstract

This article aims to discuss the philosophy of life of Stoicism , focusing on the concept of the dichotomy of control and control bias. Stoicism teaches individuals to understand the limits of control over their lives and encourages a focus on things that are within control, such as actions, thoughts, and attitudes, rather than getting caught up in things that are beyond control. This concept provides a futuristic space to face problems in a wiser and more mature way. Stoicism emphasizes the importance of surviving in the midst of impermanent life changes, and making every challenge an opportunity to learn to become a better person. Then the criticism of Stoicism , especially related to the illusion of control bias. This bias refers to the human tendency to believe that everything can be controlled or that they have absolute knowledge of all phenomena. This illusion can create a sense of overconfidence and errors in assessing situations, which is contrary to the Stoic principle of awareness of the limitations of control. Keywords : control bias, dichotomy of control, stoicism
