Abstract

Rhizophora apiculata (bakau) and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (tumu) in are commercial export species of mangrove forest. Both species are the dominant species in mangrove forest at HPH PT. Bina Lestari I (Gaung and Mandah River Forest Complexs), Riau Province.  To ensure a continuous production of wood, detailed knowledge about standing stock obtained through inventories is needed. To facilitate and improve the reliability of inventories, volume table is indispensable.  The results represent mensurational study on 100 purposive selected sample trees, 50 samples for each species. Two models are developed, in which, bakau used a volume/diameter function (tariffs),while the other (tumu) used volume/diameter/height function to estimate the volume of individual trees. The dveloped tariffs of bakau is : V = 0.000107152 D 2.4; while the tariffs of tumu is : V = 0.000134896 D1.61 T, where V is volume from the base of tree up to diameter limit 7 cm outside bark and without root/shrunk; D is Diameter outside bark at 20 cm over the root/shrunk; and H is Total tree height.

Abstract

The study describes the implementation of the sylviculture system of Indonesian selective logging and planting (TPTI) in lowland tropical forest. The study area, which is located in the forest concession area of PT. Hugurya (Aceh), is dominated by species of kapur (Dryobalanops aromatica) and meranti (Shorea leprosula). Within the study area, tree species currently exploited include Shorea leprosula, Dryobalanops aromatica, Dipterocarpus grandtjlorus (Dipterocarps family), and Scapium macropudum (Sterculiaceae family). The species in tree and regeneration stages that were found either in primary forest or logged-over forest are dominated by commercial species, especially tree species from the Dipterocarps family. The number of nucleus trees (seed trees) is sufficient and fulfills the requirement of Indonesian selective cutting and planting. The condition of natural regeneration is also sufficient and will ensure the forest's sustainability at the next cutting cycle.

Abstract

A study of peasant's choices to agriculture crops is important to understand what is its preferencies, consideration, and constraints. This knowledge of peasant' choices could help the scientists and extensionists for sharing their knowledges with the peasant communities to improve agriculture productivity, product optimalization, and products prices. The objective of the research is to explain what reasons/ consideration is taken into account by peasants when he choose a kind ofplant species. The research found that peasant choose kebuntalun crops with some reasons i.e. (1) to get numerous products; (2) to get various products (daily and continuously, for household subsistence and for income); (3) to be easy maintenance; (4) to be easy to sell products; (5) its price is stable or increase; (6) heritage from our parent; (7) small plot of land; (8) to be suitable with land condition. This finding show that the peasant has productive, efficient, and commercial orientation as well as prefer to diversity of products. Based upon this finding the author suggest that the role of extensionist is to provide basket ofplant choices which can be productive, efficient, easy to maintain, easy to sell, stable or increase price, and diversity ofplants.

Abstract

Biomass studies using combination of destructive and non-destructive sampling were conducted in the tropical rain forest od Dustum Aro, Jambi, In non-destructive sampling, biomass densiry was estimated using algometric equation from Brawn (1997) mainly for trees with diameter at breast height greater than 5 cm.

Abstract

A comparison study on the efliciency of the use of smaN format non-metric aerial photographs(SFNAP) and conventional (metric) aerial photographs (CAP) was performed. The relative efficiency was computed based upon the implementation of double sampling with regression technique in comparison with the use of simple random sampling. The study found that, for estimating stand volume of teak wood, the SFNAP provided better sampling error as well as relative efficiency than those provided by the CAP. The relative efficiency of the SFNAP is 296.7% while therelative efficiency of the CAP is 225.7%. Economically this study expressed that, the use of the SFNAP for forest inventory using double sampling technique is cheaper than using the CAP.

Abstract

This study present a case of forest land dispute between Private Forestry Company and Local Community and its resolution processes. The study focus on the strategy options, implemented by interest groups. The strategies include law option (customary law, state law, letter of agreements) and conflict resolution models option (negotiation, mediation, etc). Which strategy implemented by interests groups will determine the results of the resolution process. This study describe which laws, models of resolution, and the results. The local community has chosen the letter of agreement, i.e. the forest land boundary, as the basis of (forest) land claim, while the Private Forestry Company, on the other hand, has chosen the state laws (decrees of forestry ministry). The NGOs has chosen her position as the community representative, while the government (forestry department, provincial government), on the other hand, tended to be the company agent. Neither of the local community and the NGOs or the company has satisfied yet to the result of the conflict resolution.

Abstract

Abstract

This paper describes the feasibility of small format non-metric aerial photographs (SFNAP) for forestry purposes. The analysis covers evaluation of the stereoscopic vision quality and the use of SFNAP for estimating stand variables such as tree height, crown diameter, crown density and number of trees. The study found that the SFNAPs were feasible to be applied for forestry purposes. Although the marginal information such as fiducial mark and nivo that usually used for determining the principal point and tilt are not available in the SFNAP, the study found that the stereoscopic vision could be made quite easy, and the stand variables could be well measured. Also, even though the SFNAPs were printed using enlargement process (not contact printing), the produced photographs were quite sharp and have good contrast.
