Abstract

One of the major problems in teaching social sciences is finding the appropriate strategies to deliver the lessons to students. The researchers are determined to develop proper guidelines in using educational strategies to improve the learning process, one of which is the Utilization of Technology-Aided Strategies, that a social science teacher could implement inside the four corners of the classroom, especially in the 21st century, where one of the major problems of teachers are engaging students’ participation. Descriptive quantitative research method was used in conducting this study. Through the process of purposive sampling technique, a total number of 50 teachers in a national high school was selected to participate in the study. The major instruments used were survey questionnaires. The data gathered were analyzed. The findings demonstrated the importance of understanding the Utilization of Technology-Aided Strategies, when it comes to teaching Social Science. In order to make sure that the right tools and materials were available for them to work with, teachers should be aware of the profiles and learning styles of the learners. The teaching and learning process should be improved by teachers and school officials, boosting its effectiveness and efficiency.

Abstract

This paper is concerned with developing a model of analysis of sectarianism in terms of critical pragmatics. It aims to introduce a critical pragmatic approach to the sectarian discourse. Based on critical discourse analysis of relevant approaches, pragmatic notions and domains, critical pragmatic analyses and linguistic realizations of sectarianism as a social practice within the speech event of preaching, the model is structured and introduced. Certain observations and comments on the models are raised as a matter of setting an adequate model for the analysis of sectarian discourse under critical pragmatics. Using the model, the paper has come up with certain conclusions such as that pragmatics plays a key role in manifesting and uncovering sectarian discourse as a hidden ideology, and that sectarianism is revealed by preachers only through critical pragmatic strategies, for which the present approach can be f use to de-sectarianize such discourse.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to examine the impact of blended collaborative learning on Iranian learners’ understanding concept of English texts. Among the statistical population of eighth grade male students in Birjand in the academic year, 2021 which numbered 637 people, 30 students were purposefully separated into two experimental and control groups using the available sampling method. After taking the Oxford Placement Test and the purposeful appointment of learners in experimental and control groups, a pre-test was taken. Students in both groups were trained in English text comprehension techniques and skills for 4 weeks. Analysis of test results showed that students who were taught by the blended collaborative method, compared to students who were taught by the individual blended method, in understanding the concept of English texts, correct understanding and recognition of words and proper vocabulary in order to complete incomplete texts in the post-test and delayed the post-test stages have been performed much better. In understanding the reading of English texts, there was a meaningful difference between the performance of the experimental and control groups in the post-test, but no meaningful difference was obtained in function of the control and experimental groups in the delayed post-test.

Abstract

Feminism is an organized movement to defend women's rights, whose roots go back to the Periods of European Enlightenment (Renaissance). Throughout its long history, this movement wanted to overthrow the patriarchal system and eliminate the rule of gender discrimination. Feminism officially began its activity at the end of the 18th century and has gone through a period full of ups and downs since then. The three important waves of this movement are considered to be one of its most important activities, whose basic goals are "preserving the right to vote for women, and emphasizing protest against gender, social and economic differences and inequalities." After the feminism movement, feminist criticism emerged followed the reflection of women's voices and their experiences in literature and started its activities from the second half of the 20th century. The works of famous writers such as “Virginia Woolf” and “Simon de Boir” are eminent examples of this movement. In this article, we have reviewed the methods that can be used to study literary works from the perspective of feminist criticism, as well as the things that a literary critic can do to write a good and interesting critique of a work based on the theory of feminism. The result showcased that Critics who take a feminist approach in criticizing literary texts do not deny the existence of differences between male and female characters in the works. It may be said that the view that women are different from men basically corresponds to patriarchal ideology, but it must be said that the third wave feminists do not deny the existence of a difference between men and women, and in their opinion, the difference between women and men can even be seen in the readiness or potential ability of women to establish interpersonal communication and recognize it as a symbol of compassion, empathy and kindness. In addition, we have also stated that it can be a good guide in the field of writing feminist criticism on literary and artistic works.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the reading level of the grade 7 learners before and after the conduct of intervention and to determine the effectiveness of Directed Reading-Thinking Activity (DRTA). The reading level was measured using the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) tool where word recognition and comprehension are the variables used. On word recognition, mispronunciation, repetition, substitution, omission, insertion, reversal and transposition are considered miscues while the comprehension level was determined by the scores in the comprehension questions. Reading level is determined by their level in word recognition and comprehension taken from the Phil-IRI formula. The researcher used experimental group of respondents in teaching reading using the DRTA. The respondents are the grade 7 learners of Mindanao State University-Maguindanao who experienced modular learning for the last two school years in elementary, 2020 – 2022. The study was conducted in September to October 2022. The instruments are the reading selection consisting of 134 words and the 10 comprehension questions. Results revealed that there is a significant difference on respondents’ reading level in terms of word recognition with the t-value -8.388 and comprehension with t-value -14.357 after the use of Directed Reading-Thinking Activity (DRTA). It is therefore concluded that DRTA has a positive effect in improving the reading skills of the grade VII.

Abstract

The Wide Sargasso Sea - (1966). After years of contemplating Charlotte Bronte's Creole madwoman Bertha Mason, Jean Rhys set out to give voice to what is mute in Bronte’s Jane Eyre. Rhys lets Antoinette narrate her tale, revealing the "other side" of Bronte's story: what occurred in the years before and after Mr. Rochester's first marriage in Jamaica. As a twentieth-century West Indian writer, Rhys was able to expose implicit assumptions and ideals in Bronte's writing, such as imperialist England's attitude toward her colonies. The natural environment is a mirror of interior states of being and emotion, a remark on the novel's characterization and action. Even though the two books seem to be identical, they are not. Rhys flips Bronte's Victorian Romantic symbols, Wide Sargasso Sea appears more contemporary and realistic. This paper aims to highlight the victimized characters in both novels and gives a real comparison of the most victimized ones. Both works, respectively, show women fighting patriarchy and injustice at any historical time. From a feminist standpoint, this study compares, Bertha Mason, in the two narratives. Even though Wide Sargasso Sea is a forerunner to Jane Eyre, Rhys expressed a more progressive and revolutionary feminist viewpoint. Bertha Mason is a more victimized female than Jane of the patriarchal system and colonization. These feminist works have left an indelible effect on literature. Most literary commentators have concentrated on Jane, the protagonist of Charlotte Bronte's narrative, on the other hand, there is Bertha Mason, the insane lady on the upper floor imprisoned, as just Jane's evil twin. Bertha has received much less attention than Jane, not as an evil side of Jane, but as a stand-alone figure. This study compares Bertha Mason's representation in Jane Eyre and Wide Sargasso Sea. Bertha, who acts as an impediment to Jane's pleasure in Jane Eyre, is recognized as a victim of society.

Abstract

Understanding the factors that influence students' perceptions may also assist administrators in making informed decisions about course and organizational design, as well as guiding professional development workshops for instructors. The goal of this sentiment analysis was to describe students' opinions about teachers' teaching performance in online classes. It sought to ascertain the most frequently occurring words in relation to their sentiments, as well as the emerging clusters derived from their sentiments. This study used a descriptive qualitative method employing sentiment analysis of Orange text mining software. Sentiment analysis extracts information from positive and negative words in text, from the context of those words, and from the linguistic structure of the text. The 237 college students were the participants of this study. The findings show that the emerging clusters derived from the sentiments of the students were the teachers facilitate learning and motivate students to learn. Teachers act as facilitator and motivator of students to learn in online classes. The teaching performance of the teachers can be manifested in how they facilitate the teaching-learning process and how they give feedbacks and motivations to students. Consequently, the teaching performance of the teachers in online classes is one of the indicators of the students’ sentiments. This implied that, once the teacher performed very well in the class, students become satisfied and perform better in the class.
