Abstract

Coping styles are essential for those with mental health problems during the COVID-19 pandemic. This could result in either positive or negative mental health outcomes. It includes cognitive and behavioral efforts used by an individual to solve problems and reduce stress caused by these problems. This paper explores the coping styles among college students during the COVID-19 pandemic. The researchers utilized a descriptive-quantitative research design to identify the coping styles used by BSED students in the new normal due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The respondents were 101 BSED English Students from the second year to the fourth year. The survey questionnaire was used as a data-gathering instrument in the quantitative approach. Based on the findings of the study, the coping styles are moderately used by the BSED students. This means the students practiced coping styles sometimes during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, it indicated that students' most popular coping styles, such as seeking social support and avoidance, followed by mental disengagement and humanitarian. The study was anchored on the theory of Lazarus and Folkman (1984), which stated that a person's conscious and unconscious efforts solve problems and relieve stress. To help students cope with the stress of the pandemic and build resiliency, the school should offer stress management workshops and webinars. The students require assistance from the school. These stress management training sessions aim to recognize common emotions and issues associated with the ongoing pandemic.

Abstract

This paper concludes that parents of Betawi ethnicity in Tangerang city area have different perceptions about higher education for their daughters. Some of the differences in perception include: 1) Considering higher education very important, because women when they are married and have children, the mother becomes the "first madrasa" for her children and the intelligent mother will give birth to an intelligent generation as well; 2) Consider it unimportant, because they assume that girls when married are more focused at home to be housewives; 3) Although many of the Betawi ethnic parents expect higher education in their children, many of them are at a weak economic level. In principle, this paper aims to photograph the phenomenon of reasoning of Betawi ethnic parents related to higher education for girls in Tangerang City. In its analysis, this paper uses a descriptive qualitative method that assumes that researchers are not only actors in the field but can also be the subject of research. This research is indeed considered less than perfect; therefore, it is necessary to conduct further research at least through this research to provide an overview of how Betawi ethnic perspectives concern higher education for their girls. A study that describes social phenomena in the perspective of ethnomethodology in Betawi society.

Abstract

This study determined the effectiveness of the Professional Education lessons embedded with environmental concepts and principles using the materials from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). It involved the 399 third Teacher Education students from the eight member institutions of the National Network of Normal Schools (3NS) during the first term of the academic year 2016-2017. Data gathering strategies were parallel pretest and posttest, focus group discussion, document analysis, and process documentation of the class project implementation. Data sources were the results of validated researcher-made Test on Environmental Concepts and Principles, focus group discussion, analysis of the curriculum guide, and the documentation of the students’ environmental project implementation. The t-test (4.443) between the pre-test mean of 14.50 and the post-test mean of 18.83 showed a significant increase in the test at 0.05 level of significance. The results show that the EE-enriched lessons in Professional Education courses were found effective in enhancing the level of environmental competence of the students based on the test results and supported by the students’ narratives and project implementation. The institutionalization of the integration of environmental education in the Professional Education courses in the Teacher Education curriculum is strongly recommended.

Abstract

Decision-making process relative to educational and career aspirations has a very significant part in planning career guidance which helps the students to effectively choose the career track/strand in senior high school curriculum. This study aimed to investigate the influence of socio-economic status of students on their educational and career aspirations. Descriptive correlational research design was employed in which a researcher-made checklist was answered by the randomly chosen Grade 10 Maguindanaon students. Frequency, percentage and Chi-square were appropriately applied to provide good inferences and implications of the results. Findings revealed that most of the parents of Grade 10 Maguindanao students finished high school level. Majority of the fathers were farmers and the mothers were housekeepers whose combined monthly income ranged from ₱10,000 to ₱15,000. Socio-economic status of Maguindanao students was significantly related to their educational and career aspirations. Higher social standing of the parents led to the higher educational and career aspirations. Low family income hampered the students to take up career track with high standard. Thus, Esperanza National High School should initiate an intervention program to inspire Maguindanaon students to pursue their educational and career aspirations despite of the financial woes they experience in life.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to develop materials of reading descriptive text as supporting learning for grade X computer and network engineering students at SMKS Harapan Al- Washliyah Sigambal. The research was conducted by using the simplication of Research and Development theory by Borg and Gall (2003) which simplified by Puslitjaknov (2008). The data was taken through observation, questionnaires, and interview. The materials were validated by an English lecturer and an English teacher by using validation sheets which is adapted from BSNP. The data were collected by using descriptive analysis and the materials were arranged based on Scientific Approach. The study’ results revealed that: (1) the materials used do not support the students study program because the topics of the materials are still considered general, (2) relevant reading materials are needed by students in vocational school especially in computer and network engineering study program, (3) the developed reading materials based on Scientific Approach have been validated with the score 3.52 from the first expert and 3.65 from the second expert which is in the range of 3.25 < ≤̅ 4.00 and categorized as “Very Good”. The reading descriptive text materials have been developed in accordance to the students’ needs based on Scientific Approach.
