Abstract

Being accepted as out of the four essential language skills in the language learning process, writing seems to be difficult for numerous EFL learners. This research is an endeavor to explore if learners can grow out of the writing difficulties with topic-based writing activity. 78 third-year students at the Faculty of Foreign Languages of Phan Thiet University in Phan Thiet City, Binh Thuan Province participated in the study. These students were in the two writing classes, one class was treated as the experimental group (EG) and the other as the control group (CG). Research findings exposed the benefits of topic-based writing activity in nurturing learners' writing motivation and enhancing their writing skill. Furthermore, this activity gave students good chances to widen their knowledge on the topic, enrich their emotion on disadvantaged people, and build a friendly learning environment outside the classroom. The necessity and usefulness of the application of topic-based writing activity was predominantly recognized among students.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of aesthetics based teaching on students' attitudes toward school. This is an all-experimental study of pre-test-post-test design with a control group. The statistical population of sixth grade students in schools Fardis in the academic year of 1997-98 was. The sampling method was simple random and the selected students were divided into experimental and control groups. The sample size was determined using Morgan table and the number of sample people in each group was 16. Experimental science course was taught in the experimental group by aesthetic teaching method and in the control group by traditional teaching method. To assess the attitude towards school, McCoach (2003) school attitude questionnaire (SAAS-R) was used with a reliability of 0.96. The obtained data were analyzed by multivariate analysis of covariance. The results showed that the level of attitude towards school in students who took the sixth grade experimental sciences course with aesthetic methods was different from the students who learned this course with the usual teaching methods in schools. Therefore, the aesthetic method can play a role as an active and effective method in students' academic achievement in science.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore factors impede teachers’ effective use of AVMs to teach ESS at Abba Pascal Girls’ School. The subjects used were 2 English teachers of grades 5, 6, 7 & 8 and sampled students. The grades had 2 sections that encompassed 50 students each. Convenience & systematic sampling techniques were employed to select the school & 32 informants among the population of 400. To get the exact number of the participants which are 4 of each section, the researchers divided the population’s number of the sections into the numbers of each student’s representation accordingly: 50÷4 = 12.5. Thus, every Nth participant was selected systematically according to their attendance lists. Therefore, 4 informants from each section were taken in the intention of the researchers. Both the teachers were directly taken as participants due to the manageable number of entire population. Then, the researchers employed mixed research approach after collecting data through questionnaire, interview & classroom observation. Quantitative data were analyzed in percentages; while qualitative were thematically organized & categorized in a statement form. Conclusion & recommendations were forwarded based on the findings. The findings are learning ESS using AVMs benefit teachers & students. Conversely, the challenges drawback teachers’ effective use of AVMs were underpinned in categories of, the challenges related to classroom, gadgets, teachers & students. Therefore, stakeholders of the school should facilitate technical training sessions for teachers & consider the class size. Finally, the windows of the classrooms should be painted with non-translucent paints.

Abstract

Teacher uses language as a medium of communication to teach, guide and instruct students in the classroom. This study aims to investigate the English teacher's directives and the students' responses to these directives. This study participants were an English teacher of a junior high school in Indonesia who teaches an eighth-grade class and her students who were chosen purposively. This qualitative case study was collected through observation, and interviews and were then analyzed by following Miles' interactive cyclical model. The results revealed that the teacher mostly produced directive speech acts types of commands and requests rather than suggestions. Commands have been the most commonly used type of directives since the teacher plays a control in the classroom because it is more understandable and familiar for the students. Hence, the students' responses varied, and depended on their response strategies and each personal reason.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the cognitive and effective learning outcomes of chemistry students using a scientifically based guided inquiry learning model. This study employed a quantitative methodology.. The population in this study consisted of 58 students from class XI at State Senior High School 1 Rote Timur, NTT For the 2019/2020 academic yea. Cluster random sampling was used to select the sample, which included two experimental and control classes. Tests, questionnaires, and observation sheets were used to collect data. The independent test samples t-test was used to analyze student learning outcomes. The finding showed that learning outcomes using the Scientific-Based Guided Inquiry Model and the direct method differs significantly from average high school learning outcomes. The results of the two aspects of learning outcomes, namely aspects of knowledge, and attitudes show a value of p <0.05 so that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. Thus, there are differences in student learning outcomes given the learning method using guided inquiry with students using conventional learning. However, from the results of data analysis, it was obtained that the p-value for the knowledge aspect was 0.000, the pvalue for the attitude aspect was 0.038.

Abstract

The covid-19 pandemic has affected the students’ learning mentality as they become passive during online classes due to what is happening around them. The focus of teaching now is to make the students feel comfortable learning despite distractions caused by the pandemic. This paper presents storytelling as an oral communication strategy during online classes to be comfortable and motivated in their learning. This study used the descriptive research method that describes storytelling as an instructional strategy in online classes for students to be engaged and motivated to learn. The study's findings indicate that the use of stories and the act of telling personal stories have developed the students' expressive language and provided students the opportunity to express their ideas in a non-threatening environment. It proved that storytelling during the online class positively impacted the students’ oral communication skills. It helped students communicate their thoughts and feelings without fear of being judged. Moreover, it offered opportunities for students to participate in class.

Abstract

The study set out to examine the relevance of the competence-based Advanced Level mathematics curriculum for entry into university mathematics-related degree programmes. The study adopted a qualitative approach ingrained in the interpretive paradigm which employed a case study design. Four A-Level mathematics teachers, eighteen Lower Sixth and six Upper Sixth mathematics major students were purposively sampled to respond to semi-structured face-to-face interviews and focus group interviews. The study found that the implementation of the competence-based Advanced Level mathematics curriculum was negatively affected by incompetent teachers and supervisors, lack of resources and lack of support from other stakeholders. The study concluded that these impediments impacted negatively on students who aspired to pursue mathematics-related degree programmes at university and that there is a mismatch on the mathematics units in the competence-based Advanced Level mathematics curriculum and university requirements for mathematics-related degree programmes. The study recommends ministerial corroboration fostering university degree programmes requirements to be taught in high school, stakeholder involvement and continuous professional development for mathematics teachers and supervisors.
