Abstract

This study examines how verbal and visual semiotic resources interact in the promotional materials of Zootopia 2 to construct social meanings and ideological messages. Drawing on Barthes’ concepts of denotation, connotation, and myth and Kress and van Leeuwen’s multimodal framework, the study employs a qualitative multimodal semiotic approach to analyze the official movie poster and soundtrack lyrics. Data were analyzed through iterative coding focusing on representational, interactive, and compositional meanings across verbal and visual modes. The findings reveal three interconnected themes: diversity and inclusivity, collective resilience and cooperation, and optimism and self-actualization. The lyrics promote social inclusion, collaboration, and personal empowerment through explicit linguistic expressions, while the poster reinforces these meanings through character positioning, visual composition, color, and symbolic representation. The interaction between verbal and visual signs constructs a broader cultural narrative that presents diversity as a social asset, resilience as a collective process, and optimism as a pathway to personal growth. The study contributes to multimodal semiotic scholarship by demonstrating how promotional media function not only as marketing tools but also as cultural texts that communicate social values and ideological meanings through the integration of multiple semiotic resources.

Abstract

This study explores how EFL students at an Indonesian state polytechnic collaborated on a narrative writing task in a hybrid setting combining face-to-face classes with online work through Google Docs. Data collected included classroom observations over 12 sessions, analysis of three essay drafts, and semi-structured interviews with one lecturer and six students. The research focused on three questions: how students manage collaboration across physical and virtual environments, the challenges and opportunities of the hybrid format, and its impact on writing quality. Students frequently shifted between online and offline modes, using face-to-face discussions to clarify ambiguities in asynchronous comments. The hybrid approach facilitated interactions among students who rarely spoke together and provided lower-achieving students with feedback from more experienced peers. Peer trust varied, participation was inconsistent, and language barriers in commenting caused friction. Despite difficulties, an essay starting at a low level across all five writing aspects improved to an excellent level after two collaborative revisions. The results suggest that a hybrid collaborative model can enhance EFL writing skills, provided that offline support is thoughtfully designed alongside the online tools.

Abstract

In language education, students develop four language skills: speaking, writing, listening, and reading. Speaking is one of the four language skills. From freshmen to seniors, they all experience difficulties in learning English. Some of the problems may change, some may stay the same, and some may even be more complex than before. The aim of this research is to explore the differences and similarities of speaking problems faced by freshmen and senior students of English Education Department in Muria Kudus University. The methodology of this research was qualitative method. To collect the data, the researcher used questionnaire and interview. The questionnaire was distributed to freshmen and seniors that consisted of 15-20 participant. While the interview was conducted with 2 freshmen and 2 seniors from the questionnaire. Based on the data obtained, there were some similarities of problems such as affective problem, lack of consistent speaking partner, and underutilization of department programs. There were also some differences found such as cause of anxiety, finding opportunity to practice their English, vocabulary knowledge, and grammar knowledge. With that conclusion, the researcher made some suggestion, namely for lecturers to assist students in managing their anxiety and encourage them to optimize the programs provided by the departments. For freshmen to expand their knowledge and practice their speaking more. For seniors to keep practicing their English and expanding their vocabulary and grammar further. For future researcher to use this research as a useful resource in the future. Keywords: freshmen, seniors, speaking problems
