Abstract

Vitamin A is considered as one of the essential micronutrients which are extensively associated with chemopreventiveand therapeutic modalities. Carcinogenesis is a complex disease where environmental and geneticfactors act as a predisposing cause bringing about alterations in the overall cell microstructure. Possible roleof Retinoid, which is a form of Vitamin A, has been recognized in suppressing breast cancer, lung carcinoma, cancer of the colon, prostate cancer, blood cancers and to some extent the cancers of the oral cavity. Retinoidis known to act through RAR/RXR receptors to form ligands and thereby affect the transcription processand controls angiogenesis, abnormal proliferation, and metastasis. Some varieties of leukemia have shownbetter results with Retinoid therapy. However its role in oral premalignant and malignant lesions are notmuch known. This review discusses the physiologic, epigenetic and molecular role of Retinoids in lesionsof the oral cavity.

Abstract

The word ‘Pemphigus’ has been derived from a Greek term meaning “blister”. Pemphigus vulgaris is a chronicautoimmune vesiculobullous lesion primarily manifesting as intraoral blisters, gradually involving otherparts of the mucous membrane and skin. Though the exact etiology is unknown the lesion is characterizedby the production of autoantibodies directed against the intercellular substances thus categorizing it as anautoimmune disorder. Early diagnosis and management determine the course of the lesion hence dentalpractitioners should be well aware of the clinical features of pemphigus vulgaris as early diagnosis is ofconsiderable value since therapy is simplified when the lesion is confined to the mouth. Here we are reportinga case of a 40 year old female presenting with pain and burning sensation in the left retromolar area alongwith an overview of the disease.

Abstract

Successful osseointegration is achieved by the primary and secondary stability of dental implants. Theprimary stability of any successful dental implant is dependent on the quality and quantity of bone. Besidesthe experience of the surgeon and bone-implant contact (BIC)at the time of implant placement is equallyimportant. Similarly the high insertion torque helps in obtaining primary stability. Several techniques havebeen introduced to enhance the bone quality and quantity in an attempt to achieve primary implant stability. One commonly used technique is under preparation of the osteotomy site by use of a drill that is one sizesmall than the implant diameter. However undersized osteotomy compromises the healing between the boneand implant and hampers secondary biological fixation. Osteotomes have also been used in an attempt toincrease the bone width buccolingually and improve the peri-implant site bone density. However studieshave reported that there was only an increase in bone density at the periapical area with no influence onthe lateral margins and primary stability of the implant. The associated trabecular fracture with osteotomebone condensation may further damage the osteocytes and cause extension microfracturesand delayedhealing. Finally, the success of implant therapy relies largely on the stability and mechanical durability ofthe prosthesis delivered to the patient. As such several modifications, reinforcements and techniques havebeen suggested over the years to optimize the same. The latest in line is the non-subtracting osteotomy byspecially designed Densah burs. This article aims to review the theory, advantages and disadvantages of thistechnique as compared to traditional osteotomy

Abstract

Dentists as healthcare professionals have a duty and standard for patient care. Any violation in the duty andpractice makes dentists liable to negligence & legal actions. Abstract

Complete Dentures with perfect retention are complicated to attain and several method have been appliedfor obtaining the same the same. Ill-fitting dentures are due to residual ridge resorption causing difficultywhile eating and even dislodgment during talking causing embarrassment for the patient. Suction cup waswidely used for retention & stability of dentures but is said to be associated with complications like palatalperforations and oro-antral communications. Here we present a case report of denture stomatitis & palatalperforation due to the suction cup.

Abstract

In dentistry, indications of antibiotics are determined by multiple clinical and bacteriological epidemiologicalfactors. Treating odontogenic and non-odontogenic infections, for local infections, anti-microbial coverageis recommended. These act as an adjunct to dental treatment. The paper reviews the indications, usage, dosage of antibiotics, precautionary measures to be taken while prescribing them.

Abstract

It is an established fact that dental plaque as a biofilm is responsible for various types of gingival andperiodontal diseases. It is a multifactorial disease in which one of the important components is the hostdefense mechanism. Through many years of research, it has now been established that the bacteria alone arenot sufficient to cause the disease, it’s only when they evade the host defense, and in the course of protectingthe host, its immune system acts against the tissues resulting in native periodontal tissue damage. Thisreview tries to gain insight into the complex immune mechanisms which take place during the pathogenesisof periodontal diseases.
