Abstract

Purpose: The study sought to establish strategies to address barriers to entry into international trade by SMEs in Harare.  It was triggered by the need to increase the participation of Zimbabwean SMEs in foreign markets. Research methodology: The research study adopted an explanatory approach using a survey strategy and data was collected from 322 registered SMEs in Harare using questionnaires. Data was analysed using SPSS 27 to calculate descriptive and inferential statistics and Chi-square tests, correlation, and regression analyses were used to address the research questions. Results: Barriers to entry into international trade identified were a lack of managerial expertise and entrepreneurial skills and low advertising levels. The study recommends that SMEs increase the number of skilled personnel and develop SME management. SME management should also increase market knowledge and promote innovation to allow for SMEs to participate meaningfully in international trade. Limitation: The study was limited to SMEs operating in Harare only. It was quantitative and explanatory. Contribution: The study makes a significant contribution to the existing body of knowledge by bringing to the fore strategies that could enhance the international participation of SMEs, which are the backbone of economic growth in Zimbabwe.

Abstract

Purpose: The main purpose of this paper is the evaluation of the chain management model with an emphasis on intellectual capital in knowledge-based organizations using blockchain technology. Research methodology: First, by reviewing previous studies and researches, the framework for readiness to accept blockchain was extracted. Then, the different areas of the value chain of knowledge-based organizations were identified. Then, a questionnaire for pairwise comparisons was distributed using a hierarchical approach. Finally, the TOPSIS questionnaire was distributed to rank the 5 identified areas of activity in the value chain and knowledge management of knowledge-based organizations. Semi-structured interviews with the organization's experts have been used to explain the promising methods in the organization further to improve the efficiency of blockchain acceptance and meaningful research orientations for researchers. Results: These findings include the undiscovered potential of knowledge sharing and collaboration networks, the expected evolutionary stages of the Internet of Things, and eliminating intermediaries that lead to new business models such as token building and short-term rather than long-term relationships. Obstacles include staffing problems, legal uncertainty, loss of infrastructure and standardization, and unclear governance structures. Improving smart contract security and interoperability between private and public protocols will further expand technolog Contribution: The application of blockchain technology in the field of knowledge and intellectual capital management, due to the promotion of key indicators such as improving security in the context of non-forgery, unchangeable information, tracking, decentralization, and transparency, leads to the application of this technology in knowledge and intellectual capital management.

Abstract

Purpose: Prior research has demonstrated the critical role that climate change disclosure plays in solving global sustainability challenges connected to human existence and the long-term viability of businesses. The goal of this study is to add to the existing literature on the impact of climate change-related disclosure on the financial performance of oil and gas companies in Nigeria. Research Methodology: The study adopted an ex post facto research design, and the final sample consisted of eight oil and gas companies listed on the NGX for the year 2012-2021. The final sample consisted of a balanced panel of 80 firm-year observations. The dependent variable was Return on Assets (ROA). Data were analyzed using a multiple regression model. Results: The findings showed a positive relationship between CCRD and ROA, which was also confirmed to be significant at the 5% significance level. Limitations: The model includes leverage, audit quality, and firm size, in addition to CCRD, to account for their effect on ROA. Therefore, other factors that may affect firm performance are not included in the model. Contribution: This study addresses one of the most important but less explored issues of environmental research in one of the largest economies in SSA. The data collected from the content analysis are original and provide important evidence of the impact of CCRD on firm performance. These findings encourage oil and gas companies to reduce their carbon emissions and disclose their carbon management activities.

Abstract

Purpose: This study compares the determinants of liquidity of Islamic Banks (IBs) and Conventional Banks (CBs) based on the loan-to-deposit ratio (LDR) and financing-to-deposit ratio (FDR) between 2016 and 2020. Research Methodology: The data analysis technique used was panel data regression. Results: The results show Economic growth has a positive effect on banking liquidity risk, while non-performing loans (financing) have a negative effect on banking liquidity risk. Limitations: The frame time in this research was 2016-2020 which, before Bank Syariah Mandiri, Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) Syariah, and Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI) Syariah merged into Bank Syariah Indonesia. Contribution: This study can be used as a reference for preparing or perfecting regulations that can be bolder in expanding credit (financing). Commercial banks are expected to be able to manage liquidity so that the liquidity ratio is not less than or exceeds the tolerance limit, especially for CBs, and are used as evaluation material for the performance of IBs, especially CBs. Novelty: Several previous studies conducted separate analyses of the determinants of LDR and FDR in one type of commercial bank and showed contradictory results. This research did not conduct separate analyses in one type of bank but combined the determinants so that they could cause liquidity risk by measuring LDR on BUK and FDR on BUS to discuss these conflicting findings.

Abstract

Purpose: This study investigates the influence of various macroeconomic factors, including the exchange rate, interest rate, inflation rate, and Gross Domestic Product, on the performance of the Nigerian Stock Exchange NSE 100 index. Utilizing a decade of annual data spanning from 2011 to 2021, this research employs the Augmented Dickey-Fuller test to explore the impact of these macroeconomic variables on stock market performance. Research methodology: Within this context, the time series Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model is employed to discern the ramifications of naira/US dollar exchange rate volatility on Nigeria’s stock market performance. Results: Multiple regression analysis results indicate a significant negative effect of the exchange rate on share returns, revealing that a 10% increase in the real exchange rate correlates with a 0.15% decrease in the ASPI. Similarly, the inflation rate is associated with a negative coefficient, suggesting an adverse effect on stock prices. In contrast, interest rates and GDP exhibit positive coefficients, with 5% and 10% impacts on the ASPI, respectively. Limitation: All data used in this study were secondary. However, data from previous years were not readily available. This is the main limitation of this study. Contribution: Ultimately, this study underscores the importance of forecasting the exchange rate as a pivotal determinant of business success, offering recommendations for future endeavors.

Abstract

Purpose: The study intended to ascertain whether providing training and development facilities positively impacted the job commitment of entry-level garment employees in Bangladesh. Research Methodology: The response rate for the survey was 44.89%, derived from a sample size of 450 data points obtained by a basic random sampling technique. The study employed Microsoft Excel 2007, SPSS 22.0, and AMOS 23.0 to conduct exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling to assess the strength and reliability of the suggested research framework. Results: The study revealed a significant enhancement in the level of commitment among lower-level employees in the Bangladeshi garment industry when provided with training and development potential. Limitations: One primary constraint encountered in this study pertained to issues associated with  data collection. The target demographic consists exclusively of individuals with lower levels of educational attainment. Allocating funds for research in finance remained a significant area of focus. As a result of these limitations, the survey was unable to gather nationwide data. Contribution: This study is distinctive as it focuses on individuals occupying lower-level positions within the Bangladeshi garment sector, exploring the potential avenues for professional advancement. Practical Implication: The study may benefit Bangladeshi garment firms' HR strategy and training and development plans. Environmental and internal variables can stress workers. Professional progress and quality training will help dedicated workers overcome these challenges. Novelty: The study is unique in two perspectives: the bottom-level employees and the emerging economy like Bangladesh.

Abstract

Purpose: This study examines the impact of the COVID-19 health crisis on the behavior of actors and legislation on the Moroccan stock market. Research Methodology: This study uses the collection and exploitation of data from key institutional reports and legal data limited to certain laws and regulations (excluding relevant case law and doctrine) attesting to the orientations of capital market authorities following the declaration of a state of health emergency. Results: The analysis revealed that the measures taken by the government, central bank, and AMMC helped curb the capital market and provide investors with the tools they need to strengthen the resilience of Morocco's capital market. Limitations: The first concerns the difficulty of analyzing the long-term effects of a health crisis. The second limitation concerns the existing models, theories, and methodological limitations. Contribution: This documentary study synthesizes the psychic reactions and behaviors of Moroccan stock exchange market actors in times of crisis. In addition, it enables researchers to better understand the legal interventions taken to regulate and redirect behaviors influenced by the pandemic in the Moroccan capital market.

Abstract

Purpose: This study examines the role of AI in small business operations. Specifically, we identified areas where AI could be deployed, barriers to deployment of AI, identified AI tools in business, and ascertained the number of SMEs that consciously use any form of AI in their business operations. Research Methodology: This study adopted a descriptive design. The population of the study was 27546 small businesses that were registered under the Cooperate Affairs Commission (CAC), and a sample size of 379 was arrived at by adopting Krejcie and Morgan's 1970 sample size determination formula. The source of data was solely primary through interviews, which later formed a stepping stone for the structured questionnaire used for the study. The instrument was validated and tested for reliability. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics consisting of frequencies and percentages. Results: Most SMEs in Nigeria are still operating manually; hence, they do not enjoy the massive potential of AI deployment and remain perpetually small in size. Limitations: Descriptive statistics for the analysis were used to reduce the inferrability of the findings. Contribution: Given the increasing dependence on technology and AI, this study highlights the importance of AI not only for big and multinational corporations, but also for SMEs in Nigeria. Novelty: A study of this nature has not been undertaken in Nigeria, specifically focusing on southeast Nigeria, which has a large number of small businesses in the region.
