Abstract

Environmentalists are now seeking a new way to tackle environmental crises after the failure of the science-based approach to these issues. They look for an alternative perspective and mechanism on the basis of religion or wisdom of local tradition for the environment maintenance. Islamic law (fiqh) offers ethical grounds and norms for the conservation of nature. The grounds are not abstract norms but concrete guidance for humans as the God’s vicegerent on earth. Furthermore, fiqh has provided individuals and society the standard of ethic and practice to deal with nature. This article examines the norms and history of fiqh regarding human-nature relations or fiqh al-bī’ah (Islamic law of nature preservation). It shows that fiqh offers a detailed h\alal-h\aram provision as the scheme of standard consumption, hima (wildlife protection) and ihyā’ al-mawat (cultivation of unowned land). Abstract

Based on historical reports, Islamic epistemology paradigm has evolved from time to time bringing different schools each other. This paper aims at revealing such differences. Methods employed are philosophical Literary Review where compiled data are analyzed inductively to formulate theoretical constructions. Research findings reveal that peripatetic philosophers highlight their mind as a dominant tool to gain knowledge using demonstrative method (burhānī).Whilst illuminative philosophers, ‘irfāniyyīn, and Sufis believe that knowledge can only be derived from mystical intuition after purification of the heart (qalb) trough practices (riyāḍah). Different schools such as ones held by Mulla Sadra and Abed al-Jabiri are based on those distinctive principles.

Abstract

This paper analyses how inductive paradigm has been misperceived and mistreated by Muslims, and discusses the extent to which the inductive paradigm and the deductive one has long been competing to one another throughout the development of science in Islam. This paper argues that the backwardness of Muslim civilization is due to the fact that the inductive paradigm has long been neglected and has been misperceived by Muslim scientists as a Western type entity which should be deconstructed and, therefore, should be put aside. This attitude stems from the Muslims’ attitude towards the Qur’an and Hadith as direct sources of modern science, scientific corpuses from which modern theories of sciences emanate. In order to achieve an advancement of science, Muslims do not have any choice other than treating the inductive paradigm properly as an epistemological as well as methodological apparatus in developing sciences either natural sciences, social humanities and religious as well as Islamic studies.

Abstract

Philosophizing by philosophers is logical, independent, systematic, radical, and universal thinking on anything. Researchers have long been interested in investigating Islamic Philosophy, as a branch of science that develops later and commonly known as one rooted from Greece. This paper then aims at investigating the extent Islamic Philosophy interconnects with Greek Philosophy as well as their differences. Methods employed at this research are identifying Qur’an verses on Philosophy, and enriching them to reviews of related literature. Important findings are Islamic Philosophy is mainly derived from Qur’an values, its interconnectedness with Greek Philosophy does not mean it is integrated, and apart from different views on Philosophy, arguments where Qur’an reveals values of Philosophy is highlighted.

Abstract

Ontology dwells on the issue of how to explain substance, the nature of all that exists. Substance itself is an actual reality, not an artificial, deceiving, and changing reality. Since philosophy and mysticism are talking about substance, both fields of Islamic scholarship have a relationship to one another at an ontological level. This paper aims to elaborate interconnection between them. Elaborating the interconnection, the author analyzes the ontological aspects of al-Gazali’s sufism and Naqsyabandiah ṭarīqah. The author concludes that the ontological interconnection between both disciplines are very closely from the standpoint of the relation of God, man, and nature.

Abstract

Muslim philosophers thought on ethics is not just about what is good and good action, but also at the same time order muslims to commit teachings of the good action. It means that the study of ethics does not stand alone but linked and fused with moral teachings. The end objective to be achieved with ethical and moral teachings is happiness that is described as the combination of elements of safety, peace, and quiet. According to Muslim philosophers, happiness can be achieved through acts of decency and deployment of deep sense of intellegence. They assume that the happiness achieved through the second way has higher levels of morality than through the first one. This is so, partly, since they find that such special achievement can only be achieved by special people, namely the philosophers.

Abstract

Human beings are the only creature whose capability of knowledge enabling them to develop. However, this could be hampered by the wrong epistemology understanding based on a religion they believe. This research aims to encourage human thought to be dynamically progressive without jeopardizing values of Qur’an. This is carried out through placing the Islamic epistemology on the autonomy of ration and empirical experiences and conducting dialectical process between them and Al-Qur’an. Conclusions derived are that human knowledge can develop dynamically and progressively in line with the spirit of the Qur’an. It automatically has an impact on the development of holistic human resources. In this context, Islamic epistemology then is the main drive for the development of human resources.
