Abstract

This paper aims to scrutinize how Indonesian religious education, particularly the 2013 curriculum of junior high schools (7-9-year-old), has addressed environmental issues in its concepts or practices. In the Indonesian context, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) has been implemented since 2009, and it ideally should be integrative in the curriculum. Religious education as the core of the national curriculum has pivotal roles in guiding students on how to be good people. In line with the ESD vision in preserving this Earth, a religious education curriculum has visions similar to the ESD. Therefore, this research reviewed the religious education curriculum literature and conducted an in-depth interview with five religious education teachers. Its results conveyed that the ESD values have existed within the religious education curriculum. However, practically it is less effective because the curriculum tends to focus on cognitive goals. In addition, more training is necessary to increase teachers’ capacity.

Abstract

This research focuses on the legitimacy of Donald Trump’s speech in declaring Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel on December 2017. This research aims to: (1) identify the text structure of the speech, (2) describe the social cognition of this speech, (3) and to reveal the social context of this speech. The compiled data is analyzed by using Van Dijk’s CDA theory of socio-cognitive (1988). This theory has interrelated three dimensions of analysis consisting of text structure, social cognition, and social context. The method of this research is qualitative by using the descriptive analysis. The data source of this research is the speech text of Donald Trump declaration speech of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital on December 2017. The result of this research shows that there is semantic aspect (microstructure) used by Donald Trump: Background (7), Detail (4), and Presupposition (15). From the analysis, the researcher argues that Donald Trump tends to be pro-Israel. This is supported in the structure of the text by how it consistently uses direct language to influence the emotional attachment of the intended by using logical facts and emotional involvement to make negative out-group representations to get positive representations to them and their allies. Furthermore, social cognition reveals the ideology and partisanship of Donald Trump about this conflict. It can be identified clearly by correlating the context of this speech to something that related to Israel-Palestine conflict. In social cognition, as the president of the United States of America, Donald Trump has a massive influence to the international world, even though it caused pros and contras for all elements of society. Possible further research about critical discourse analysis can be conducted by analyzing other issues. In short, it is also a suggestion to the other researchers to investigate more variation data such as news, advertisement, movie, and so on

Abstract

Freud’s psychoanalytic approach has been one of the most controversial approaches to many fields of interest. Relating to education and educational psychology, this approach plays a significant role in modifying and enhancing one’s behavioral relationship among the educational elements like educators, parents, and students. Therefore, in many things, this approach has contributed a lot of inspiration in the development of education. In literary works, there seems to be a mutual fascination between psychoanalysis and literature whereas theory and approach, psychoanalysis explains literature and literature itself exploits psychoanalysis for creative purposes and works. Here, as a creative work, movie is considered literature because it can be interpreted and analyzed just like other written works of literature. As a learning instrument, movie evokes an affective domain that leads to changes in learning behavior and attitudes. Experiencing certain-themed movies can trigger particular reflective memories and reference toward events occurring on a daily basis and it can further strengthen the foundation for learning complex concepts like psychoanalysis.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the deconstruction of Peter Pan’s character in Kitsis’ and Horowitz’s work as described in Barrie’s Peter Pan. Kitsis’ and Horowitz’s Once Upon a Time, Season Three is the first film that deconstructs the character of Peter Pan from Barrie’s Peter Pan. The qualitative method is used in analyzing the main data that are taken from both works, Barrie’s Peter Pan and Kitsis’ and Horowitz’s Once Upon a Time, Season Three. The data analysis starts by selecting the data from re-watching and re-reading the works. Then analyzing them using the theory of deconstruction, character and characterization and cinematography. The theory is used to find the binary opposition and analyzing the characteristics of Peter Pan in both works. The cinematography is also needed to support the analysis and strengthens the argument of the analysis from the character’s deconstruction. The result of the analysis shows that the characteristic of Peter Pan in Barrie’s Peter Pan is deconstructed from hero into villain. It shows that there are four characteristics of Peter Pan as a hero that are deconstructed, namely, honest, fearless, polite and caring. Those characteristics are deconstructed into the character of Peter Pan as a villain who is manipulative, fearful, impolite and selfish. The four characteristics that are deconstructed can be seen from Peter Pan’s action towards other characters, from other characters’ explanation or the character’s emotions through every relevant scene in the film.

Abstract

Debate is a form of argument or discussion of a particular issue and it usually involves two or more speakers who express different views from each other. In a debate, speakers produce meaningful string of words to express their opinions and the words they produce may contain speech functions. The focus of this study is the speech functions realized by the first speakers in a debate competition. The debate being studied refers to a competition called Indonesian Varsity English Debate (IVED), a national debate competition held in Universitas Jenderal Soedirman. The objectives of this study are to find out the speech function choices realized by both the first speakers of the affirmative and the negative teams; and to see how the use of speech functions contributes to the development of argumentation in the debate. The data was taken from an English debate competition, i.e. the final round of IVED, which was recorded on a video compact disk. The qualitative method was conducted, and the speech functions were categorized based on the network of speech function developed by Suzanne Eggins and Diana Slade (1997). The results of this study show that the speech functions realized by the first speaker of the affirmative team are opening and continuing speech functions. The speakers of the negative team, by contrast, realized opening, continuing, and reacting speech functions because they needed to issue rebuttals of the affirmative arguments.

Abstract

The research aims to figure out factors causing Ellen, the main character of Noxon’s movie entitled To the Bone, experiences anorexia. The qualitative method is used to collect, interpret, and analyze data. Reading, rereading, collecting, sorting, grouping, interpreting, and analyzing are steps conducted to get the primary data taken from the movie. In addition, the researcher applied Psychology of Literature Theory, Anorexia Nervosa Theory, and Cinematography Theory to answer the research question. The result of this research shows that Ellen’s anorexia is caused by two factors. The first is internal factors (being stress, feeling lonely, and experiencing depression). This factor cannot be seen from other’s viewpoints, but it can be felt by Ellen only. The second is external factors because of her parents’ divorce. The divorce makes Ellen lack of affection and attention. This divorce also causes poor communication between Ellen and her parents. Thus, those two internal factors lead Ellen feels isolated and also makes Ellen’s self-esteem suffered which finally render Ellen experiences anorexia.

Abstract

This paper aims to investigate how genre is used to help the translator analyze, understand, and translate feature articles from English to Indonesian and the differences in the convention of feature article in other languages. The genre approach is used to give a brief understanding in analyzing the feature article. In this research, the researchers use the ESP (English for Specific Purposes) which sees that genre has the consistency of communicative purpose. Moreover, this research uses parallel texts in the Indonesian version to compare with the English version to know the convention of feature article. The result shows that genre approach, especially ESP, helps the translator overcome the problems in translating feature articles since genre can show the convention, communicative purpose, formulaic expressions, dictions, discourse strategy, discourse community, and discourse markers of the texts. Thus, the translator can find proper translations to fit those criteria.
