Abstract

The suweg tuber (Amorphophallus companulatus) is a potential feed ingredient found in the East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province. However, suweg tuber (AC) contains anti-nutritional compounds such as oxalic acid, requiring pre-treatment before being fed to chickens. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of AC flour on slaughter weight, carcass weight, non-carcass weight, and abdominal fat accumulation. The study was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatments, each replicated five times, totaling 20 experimental units. Each unit consisted of five broiler chickens, resulting in a total of 100 chickens. The treatments included AC00 (control, without AC), AC05 (5% AC), AC10 (10% AC), and AC15 (15% AC). The results of this study revealed that the inclusion of AC flour up to 15% could increase slaughter weight and carcass weight while reducing abdominal fat

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the effect of age on the fresh semen quality of Crossbred Boer Goats at young (8–12 months) and adult (13–16 months) ages. This case study was conducted in July 2024 at Kahfi Farm, located in Fajar Baru Village, Jati Agung District, South Lampung Regency, Lampung Province, involving three goats in each age group. The age determination of the goats was based on the replacement of their incisors. Fresh semen collection was performed using artificial vagina specifically designed for goats, in the morning, every four days, with a total of four repetitions. The observed variables included: (1) macroscopic semen quality, comprising color, odor, pH, consistency, and semen volume; and (2) microscopic semen quality, including mass movement and individual sperm motility. Data for each parameter were presented in tables as means and standard deviations (mean±SD) and analyzed quantitatively and descriptively by comparing the data for each variable between the young and adult age groups. The conclusion of this study was the fresh semen quality of Crossbred Boer goats in the adult age group (13–16 months) showed better values compared to the young age group (8–12 months), but the fresh semen from both age groups did not meet the requirements for frozen semen production to be used in artificial insemination

Abstract

This study evaluates the success of Limosin cattle embryo transfer (ET) and subsequent calf performance in Tuban Regency, Indonesia. The research employed a descriptive quantitative approach to detail observed events and relate them to research variables. Data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including Service per Conception (S/C) and Conception Rate (CR). The study found a 25% ET success rate, which is at the lower end of the national standard (25-35%). This was influenced by the limited availability of productive recipients (only 26.67% of 75 cows were deemed suitable), suboptimal physiological conditions and Body Condition Scores (BCS) of recipients, and technical challenges such as imprecise estrus synchronization and technician skill. Additionally, the tropical dry climate in Tuban contributed to heat stress, potentially impacting embryo implantation. Despite these challenges, the resulting calves showed good performance, with average birth weights of 27-28 kg and daily weight gains (ADG) of 777.8-898.9 g/day, categorizing them as optimal for superior genetic beef cattle. This indicates that in vitro fertilization (FIV) embryos from superior donors can successfully transfer desirable genetic traits even when raised by local recipient cows. The study concludes that while challenges exist, ET holds significant potential for improving cattle genetic quality in Tuban

Abstract

Paser Regency in East Kalimantan Province has considerable potential in the agricultural and plantation sectors, which generate substantial amounts of biomass residues that can be utilized as alternative feed resources for ruminant livestock. However, quantitative evaluations of the contribution of these residues to regional feed availability remain limited. This study aimed to assess the potential of agricultural and plantation residues as sources of ruminant feed in Paser Regency based on the availability of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), and total digestible nutrients (TDN), as well as to estimate the regional feed carrying capacity. This research employed a descriptive quantitative approach using secondary data obtained from the official publication "Kabupaten Paser Dalam Angka 2025". Data on harvested areas and production of major agricultural and plantation commodities were used to estimate the potential biomass residues and their nutrient contents. Feed carrying capacity was calculated by comparing the total nutrient availability with the annual feed requirements per livestock unit (LU). The results showed that agricultural residues produced approximately 32,635.46 tons of DM, 24,070.64 tons of CP, and 14,464.24 tons of TDN. Based on these values, the feed carrying capacity was estimated at 14,307 LU based on DM, 99,891 LU based on CP, and 9,211 LU based on TDN, with TDN acting as the limiting factor. Compared with the total ruminant population of 16,768.88 LU in 2024, agricultural residues could supply about 54.9% of the feed requirement. Plantation residues generated larger amounts of biomass nutrients but contributed only about 316 LU due to limitations in nutrient balance and digestibility. Overall, agricultural and plantation residues have complementary roles as local feed resources. Their integrated utilization through appropriate feed formulation can enhance feed availability and support sustainable ruminant livestock development in Paser Regency.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the sub-districts in Southwest Maluku Regency that have the potential for developing local buffalo livestock. The method used in this study was secondary data observation of Southwest Maluku Regency which was then analyzed using Location Quotient (LQ) analysis. The results of the analysis showed that Moa District had an LQ value of 2.73. West Wetar and East Wetar Districts as well as the Romang Islands also showed high LQ values of 2.74; 2.33; and 1.16, respectively. Meanwhile, there were other sub-districts with LQ values <1, meaning they were included in the non-basic category, namely Letii, Lakor, Wetar, North Kisar, and the Southern Islands Districts. Furthermore, several sub-districts in Southwest Maluku Regency, including North Wetar, Damer, Mdona Hyera, Babar Island, Wetang Island, East Babar, Masela Island, and Dawelor Dawera, even have an LQ value of 0, indicating a very low or unrecorded buffalo population. Moa District has a clear comparative advantage in buffalo farming compared to other sub-districts in Southwest Maluku Regency. Based on livestock population data analysis, this region has the highest recorded number of buffalo, 11,610 out of a total of 13,443 buffalo in the entire regency, or approximately 86.36% of the total buffalo population in the region. Moa District demonstrates outstanding potential as a center for local buffalo development in Southwest Maluku Regency. This potential also strengthens the role of the Moa buffalo as a superior Maluku germplasm that needs to be preserved and developed sustainably

Abstract

Skin diseases in livestock are a significant and often overlooked issue, but they greatly affect the quality of leather, the primary raw material for the tanning industry. Skins affected by diseases such as dermatitis, parasitic infestations, or other skin lesions are prone to defects that lower the economic and aesthetic value of the raw material. This decline in quality directly impacts the productivity and profitability of the tanning industry, as defective hides are of lower grade, reducing yields and limiting the ability to meet domestic and export market standards. This problem also affects livestock farmers through lower skin prices and can weaken added value throughout the supply chain. Our scoping study included papers retrieved from SCOPUS, PubMed, and Web of Science databases, as well as reports from various organizations. This review evaluates multiple types of skin diseases in livestock, the defects they cause, and their implications for leather quality and the broader economy. The findings of this review highlight the importance of multidisciplinary interventions in controlling skin diseases in livestock, thereby improving leather quality and enhancing the sustainability of the tanning industry.
