Abstract

The Nigerian work environment reflects the nation's kaleidoscope of cultures, ethnicities, languages, and religions. However, the importance of leveraging this robust diversity and achieving an inclusive workplace is rarely researched. Using the thematic literature review method, this paper explores the complex diversity and inclusion landscape in the Nigerian work environment, focusing on the opportunities it offers for growth, the challenges to overcome to harness these opportunities and the policies for addressing the issues of diversity and inclusion. Findings revealed that diversity and inclusion attract top talent, enhance innovation, corporate performance, and decision-making, and reduce biases, stereotypes, and employee attrition. It also revealed complex challenges, including change resistance, hidden biases, and communication barriers. Organisations can navigate these challenges by employing diversity training, inclusive leadership, equal opportunity, and general language policies. A contradiction was also revealed between the country’s ability to utilise its diverse potential and what is being achieved resulting from a low level of equity and inclusion in the Nigerian workplace and inadequate institutional and governmental structure to address the issues of inequality and discrimination. It is, therefore, imperative to formulate policies with broader coverage, expand existing ones and strengthen enforcement mechanisms to ensure compliance from both organisations and individuals. Abstract

The 21st century teachers have been affected by globalization, technological innovation and diversity in workplace thus affecting their professionalism. Teachers who develop unconcern attitudes and suffer neglect are likely to have their performance at work affected. Therefore, this study examined organizational cynicism and self-efficacy as predictors of professionalism among teachers in Oyo State, Nigeria. Cross-sectional survey design was adopted while purposive sampling technique was used to select one Local Government Area for the study. Data were collected from 300 teachers using validated scales and analysed using t-test of independent means and multiple regressions analysis to test three hypotheses at a p < 0.05 level of significance. The result revealed that organizational cynicism and self-efficacy significantly influenced professionalism among teachers. Also, organizational cynicism and self-efficacy jointly and independently predicted professionalism among teachers. Finally, organizational cynicism and self-efficacy independently predicted professionalism among study participants. The study concluded that organisational cynicism and self-efficacy are strong predictors of professionalism among teachers. Therefore, government agencies and other stakeholders should work together to improve teachers’ professional skills.

Abstract

Traumatic life experiences have an impact on learning, behaviour, and relationships in schools. A trauma-informed culture instilled in schools could significantly reduce the effects of traumatic experiences on learners, however, creating this may present challenges in schools. This article used secondary data from scholarly articles to investigate the practicality of creating a trauma- informed culture in schools. It was found that fostering a trauma-informed culture in educational settings is challenging since there are not enough qualified teachers or resources, and some activities cannot be done during school hours. It is recommended that proper training be provided to the educators and enough resources be availed to enable proper creation of a trauma- informed culture in schools.

Abstract

Migration is a conscious decision that comes with many difficulties and has been a feature of human history since the beginning of time. The process has increased in frequency recently as a result of globalization. These days, a large number of people from less developed or lower-income countries migrate to more developed or higher-income countries to gamble their fate in a new society in the hopes of ameliorating their lot in life, obtaining a more profitable job, raising their kids in a less hazardous environment, or attending top-notch universities. During their experience, they often endure hardships in the target country, such as resettlement stress, racism, unemployment, and/or language difficulties. Hence, the study of acculturation is crucial in understanding how individuals adapt to a new culture and cope with the challenges they may encounter. This article aims to explore the concept of acculturation by looking at existing theories and research on the topic.

Abstract

This article is the first of a two-part assessment of leadership practices in community development processes. In this first part, community leadership practices (CLPs) are established as everyday actions executed by community leaders in the administration of processes to achieve communal development. In which case, community development associations (CDAs) should be agents that facilitate community development. Therefore, the continued disbandment of CDAs by the government of Edo State Nigeria in the past 6 years is odd. Postulating that the prevailing anti-development leadership practices is the reason behind the disbandment, the authors assessed the state of CLPs in the study area to determine the justification or otherwise, for a Biomimetic leadership alternative. The assessment was by observation, news reports and document analysis. This article affirmed that dominant anti-development practices of CDA leaders are critical to lack of development and recommended drawing leadership lessons from resilient bio-communities for application in human communities.

Abstract

The subject of wealth and poverty is one of the major themes in the JudeoChristian Scriptures. The continent of Africa is one of the regions hugely affected by poverty. As such, there is an ongoing discourse about the biblical view of wealth and how it may be used in tackling the canker of poverty. At one breath, our contemporary materialistic culture is seducing Christians to accept the idea that poverty is a curse from God, whilst on the other extreme, wealth is viewed as an impediment to entering the kingdom of God. While a complete eradication of poverty remains a formidable challenge, particularly in vulnerable contexts, there exists an opportunity for more concerted efforts to alleviate the plight of the impoverished. As a contribution to the scholarly discourse, this paper examined what the Bible reveals about wealth and poverty and made relevant theological deductions for African church in dealing with wealth and poverty. This is timely against the backdrop that the “centre of gravity” of Christianity is in Africa which makes it befitting to address the menace of poverty from the biblical standpoint. The paper conducted a theological study of relevant biblical passages. The fact that one’s wealth does not necessarily indicate their acceptance by God and the need to share material resources were emphasized. Though the authors had the African continent in mind, the paper also applies to other contexts which share Africa’s socio-economic realities.
