Abstract

This study delves into the intricate nexus between politics of identity and democratic consolidation, focusing on the context of the 2023 presidential election in Lagos State, Nigeria. The research aimed to discern the impact of identity-related factors, namely ethnicity, religion, and region, on the process of democratic consolidation. Through the use of structured questionnaires and statistical analysis, data was collected from 150 participants across ten local governments in Lagos West senatorial district. The findings underscore the significance of politics of identity in shaping the political landscape of Lagos State during the 2023 presidential election. The study reveals compelling relationships between politics of identity and democratic consolidation. Firstly, it illuminates the pivotal role played by ethnicity in influencing political behaviour and electoral outcomes. Secondly, it highlights the relevance of religious identity in shaping political attitudes and decisions. Lastly, it emphasizes the continued significance of regional identity in the political discourse and consolidation process. In light of these findings, this study offers several recommendations to stakeholders in Lagos State's political arena. These recommendations advocate for inclusive politics, civic education, interfaith and interethnic dialogues, transparent electoral practices, equal representation, data-driven policies, grassroots engagement, effective conflict resolution mechanisms, and responsible media reporting. The ultimate goal is to foster a more inclusive, harmonious, and consolidated democratic system in Lagos State.

Abstract

The subject of wealth and poverty is one of the major themes in the JudeoChristian Scriptures. The continent of Africa is one of the regions hugely affected by poverty. As such, there is an ongoing discourse about the biblical view of wealth and how it may be used in tackling the canker of poverty. At one breath, our contemporary materialistic culture is seducing Christians to accept the idea that poverty is a curse from God, whilst on the other extreme, wealth is viewed as an impediment to entering the kingdom of God. While a complete eradication of poverty remains a formidable challenge, particularly in vulnerable contexts, there exists an opportunity for more concerted efforts to alleviate the plight of the impoverished. As a contribution to the scholarly discourse, this paper examined what the Bible reveals about wealth and poverty and made relevant theological deductions for African church in dealing with wealth and poverty. This is timely against the backdrop that the “centre of gravity” of Christianity is in Africa which makes it befitting to address the menace of poverty from the biblical standpoint. The paper conducted a theological study of relevant biblical passages. The fact that one’s wealth does not necessarily indicate their acceptance by God and the need to share material resources were emphasized. Though the authors had the African continent in mind, the paper also applies to other contexts which share Africa’s socio-economic realities.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the competency level of parents of children with special needs in providing assistance for acquiring self-care skills, the challenges they face, and their demographic profile. The study utilized a descriptive research design, including both survey questionnaires and focus group discussions. The participants consisted of 50 parents of children with special needs, ages 7 to 14, residing in Ilocos Norte, Philippines. The results showed that mothers played a significant role in providing direct assistance to their children. Secondly, parents in the age group of 35-54 may face additional challenges in managing caregiving responsibilities. Moreover, parents with low levels of education and limited financial resources may face additional barriers in accessing resources to support their child's development. The competency assessment revealed that parents may need additional support in some areas, particularly in growth and development and toileting practices. The study recommends thatpolicymakers, educators, and healthcare professionals collaborate to create and implement programs that provide parents with the support and resources they need to care for their children. This research highlights the need for more support and resources for families of children with special needs.

Abstract

Information and communication technology (ICT) is perceived as a powerful tool for improving the quality and efficiency of government services. The Zimbabwean government has also recognized the importance of the digital revolution for service delivery and has already taken significant steps towards capitalising on the potential benefits that technology brings. However, progress for Zimbabwe has been slow. This study being qualitative in its approach explores the conceptualisation of e-government and the service delivery models by drawing experiences and best practices from other countries. The study relied on the extensive review of purposively selected written documents which are then analysed using thematic and content analysis techniques.  Evidence from the selected countries reveals that government commitment towards e-government initiatives is a prerequisite for sustainable service delivery. The study highlighted that Zimbabwe can draw lessons in areas of political will and good leadership, resource commitment, data privacy and security, interoperability, accessibility among others.

Abstract

The scoping review was carried out to investigate the functionalist perspective on affirmative action for women in the workplace in the Eastern Cape Province’s selected South African universities. Given that university-specific information is available on affirmative action for women in the workplace, this scoping review employed a systematic review to investigate the implementation of the legislative framework for affirmative action policy in African-selected universities and ways to make improvements. Purposive sampling was used to select four higher education institutions (HEIs), in which there were two historically black and two historically white institutions, for representativeness. Evidently, affirmative action is indeed an existing policy in the selected institutions to redress the exclusion of women in senior positions in the past. While this review revealed the heightened visibility of women in executive positions in the four universities, women tend to be represented more than men in some executive categories. This demonstrates that the implementation of affirmative action for women has largely been successful in the country. Although with some challenges, the inclusion of women, without gender discrimination and biases, is a necessary ingredient for the sustainability of higher education administration in the country from a functionalist perspective.

Abstract

Woo SABAK," a music video clip, was created to promote agricultural tourism in Sabak Bernam. The video employs a dramatic theme to attract individuals and groups from urban areas to experience the serene agricultural landscapes and the tranquility of ‘Kampung life’. Social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Telegram were used to market Sabak Bernam as a desirable domestic destination, particularly targeting generations X, Y, and Alpha. The music video showcased local attractions like Laman Tebu Aidil, Lembah Bernam Restaurant, Ah Ma House, Bagan Nakhoda Omar Beach, Kerepek Tajuri Sdn Bhd, paddy fields, coconut plantations, fruit plantations, farms, and palm plantations. Music videos can effectively reach a broad audience and engage them, making it an ideal medium for this promotional effort. Abstract

This study aims at examining the academic performance of students in the Extended programme (4-year qualification) as compared to the Mainstream programme (3-year programme) in the Sociology Unit at the Walter Sisulu University. It aims to establish whether there is a significant difference between extended programme students and those registered in the mainstream programme. This study sought to investigate whether the Mainstream programme performs better than Extended Curricula Program students as expected by the South African Council of Higher Education and the Department of Higher Education and Training and this was done over a period of three years (2019, 2020, and 2021). Findings in the study indicate a positive percentage improvement for mainstream in 2020 and negative percentage changes for many extended curricula modules in 2021. This shows that extended curricula may develop or perform better than mainstream curricula over a three-year period. However, there are negative changes that indicate declines or poor performance in expanded curricula when compared to mainstream curricula. Overall, while the mainstream students outperform the extended curriculum ones in some modules and years, the extended curriculum students also paced over the mainstream in other instances. Mainstream. While it is established that the mainstream students are slightly ahead, the extended curriculum students are not comparatively worse off. Attention should rather be paid to module specificity to improve the performance of the extended programme students, where they lagged the mainstream.

Abstract

Terminology development as a tool that propels the evolvement of educational and translation materials and services besides enhancing the formation of a robust terminology is widely celebrated as a great linguistic tool. This is because of its’ potency in knitting together a multilingual society like Nigeria towards a common understanding and purpose. The afore-stated promotion of national unity, effective communication and the preservation of indigenous languages directed towards the creation of an inclusive nation are the same goals pursued by the National Policy on Education which couches Nigeria’s Language Policy. Consequently, this study titled, ‘From Trenches to the Crest, effectuatinga Greater Beneficence of Terminology Development to National Language Policy: The Nigeria Case’, primarily aims to explore the meritorious services of terminology development in the evolution, realization and implementation of an effective language policy in Nigeria. By surveying the historical development of Nigeria language policy, it identifies and condemns the overemphasis of the usage of English language for instructional and legislative purposes, pointing out its disservices to indigenous languages. The study also highlights the fundamental roles and challenges impeding a fuller beneficence of a symbiosis of terminology development and the National Language Policy in achieving national integration. Adopting the hermeneutical and content analysis methods of enquiry, the research in conclusion, suggests a novel pragmatic and proactive terminology development model, which will drive a vibrant language policy and implementation.
