Abstract

The Mover Teacher Program (MTP), released in 2021, is widely regarded as a crucial measure towards achieving substantial transformations in the field of education in Indonesia. The present study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the MTP in Sumbawa Besar City. Through this study, we sought evidence of lessons learnt from the field. To conduct the study, researchers employed a modified version of Kirkpatrick’s evaluation model. Three out of four postulates derived from the model were used to probe the phenomenon under investigation, i.e. (1) teachers’ reaction, (2) learning endeavor and (3) application of knowledge/skills gained. The fourth postulate regarding the assessment of students’ achievement was not included in the study as the MTP program just commenced in the research site. The study employed a qualitative research approach with a multiple-case design. Participants of this study were eight alumni of MTP teachers coming from four different schools. Data were collected through interviews, observations and study of related documents. The data collected were analyzed thematically through data reduction, data presentation, conclusion drawing and verification. Results of the study show that participants of the study benefitted from participating in the MTP program although they underwent various route of transformational learning. Regardless of disorienting problem in the beginning of the program implementation, participants were able to maintain their new skills and knowledge to improve their own teaching performance and other teachers in the impacted schools. The participants experienced transformation of learning and behavioral change after participating in the long and exhausting MTP program.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the problem of the reading literacy of deaf students, who are still relatively weak. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of local wisdom-based English reading teaching materials on improving the reading literacy of deaf students in class XI SMALB. This type of research uses a quantitative approach with an experimental research design. The sample for this study used the purposive sampling technique; the research sample was in class XI with 25 students. Data collection techniques include tests and documentation. Instrument testing uses validity and reliability. Data analysis techniques include descriptive analysis and pre-requisite tests, namely the normality test, hypothesis test, and N-Gain test. Based on data processing, the results of the study show that English reading teaching materials based on local wisdom effectively improve the reading literacy of deaf students. This is evidenced by the results of the sig value of 0.000> 0.05; thus, it can be said that there is an increase in reading literacy with local wisdom-based English reading teaching materials, which are in the high category, where the N-Gain value is 0.76.

Abstract

English teachers agreed that developing their students’ writing ability was the most chalenging than the other abilities This study explores the components of effective teaching descriptive writings. Specifically, this research examines a classroom practice of an English teacher at the State Islamic Junior High School (Madrasah Tsanawiyah) in Jember, East Java. This study focuses on how the English teacher enacted personal photograph in teaching writing and to investigate the students’ perceptions toward the use of personal photograph in writing descriptive text. This study, which employs qualitative research, portrays the reality that occurs in the field related to the enactment of personal photographs in teaching writing descriptive text. There was a successful modelling of personal photograph based on students’ views toward the learning that almost all beneficial. Aside from the successful practice, this research found minor drawbacks although did not impede the classroom practice.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate students’ views toward the use of the Think-Pair-Share teaching strategy on their oral communication skills. The primary focus of this study was to investigate the possible effect of the Think-Pair-Share teaching strategy on the students’ oral communication skills. The secondary purpose was to know the students’ view toward the application of this teaching strategy based on their experiences. Based on the purpose of the study, investigations were done by using interviews. The interviews were done with four participants consisting of the chosen students based on their experience. Zoom application was used during the interviews. Audio recordings were transcribed into text and translated into English. The keywords extracted from the transcriptions were used to determine the coding. Furthermore, the themes were reported as the study's findings and then supported by previous research. The result showed that the Think-Pair-Share teaching strategy could help the students enhance their self-confidence and could be helpful in improving their oral communication skills on condition that the students use English as the medium of discussion. Meanwhile, the findings for the secondary purpose revealed that the students found this teaching strategy was quite helpful in improving their teamwork and critical thinking skill. The students also felt that this teaching strategy offered varied activity, thus making the class become less boring. The findings reveal that the Think-Pair-Share teaching strategy needs to be implemented carefully in order to achieve its full effectiveness. As the implication, the Think-Pair-Share teaching strategy could be applied considering the advantages and the effects for the students.

Abstract

The presence of a technology-based speech learning application namely English Language Speech Application (ELSA), an artificial intelligence (AI) may promote EFL students' speaking performance because of its great features. This research attempts to examine EFL students' speaking performance by using the ELSA speak application, further explore their perceptions of using it, and find out the inhibiting factors influencing low performance in their speaking. A mixed-method research design was applied to obtain both quantitative and qualitative data. 21 EFL students (5 Males and 16 Females) from Universitas Teknologi Yogyakarta were involved in the data gathering process which was collected by using a test, questionnaire, and semi-structured interview. Furthermore, pre-test and post-test were conducted to examine their speaking ability, and a questionnaire using a 4-point Likert scale. In addition, a semi-structured interview was conducted to further explore the inhibiting factors of their low speaking performance. The findings revealed that students' speaking ability has significantly improved after using the ELSA application. It can be known the mean score of pre-test results was 75, meanwhile, the post-test score was 88. There was a 17% improvement after using the ELSA application. Furthermore, of 20 respondents, 18 (90%) of respondents feel confident in speaking English by using the ELSA Speak application. Only 2 (10%) of the respondents disagree and none strongly disagree about the statement. Of 20 respondents, 16 or 80% of respondents have positive perceptions that using ELSA may increase their speaking performance. Moreover, of 20 respondents, 19 or 95% of respondents perceived ELSA to be a great speech application that could boost their motivation to improve their speaking performance. 18 or 90% of respondents perceived that this application has a good quality learning design. Meanwhile, internal and external factors were identified as the inhibiting factors influencing their low speaking performance.

Abstract

Language development begins at the beginning of human life, but the stages are diverse. This study aimed at describing an 8 year old child speech delay and identifying the causes of the delay and its relation to language performance at school. A case study design encountered that AA could not speak clearly especially, and a hearer did not understand what she said except her mom. For almost one semester, the researchers tried to observe AA's speech pattern and found some speech error-unclear saying words containing H and Z, and X at the beginning and the end of the word. Often the researchers found her emotional when she was not able to perceive and deliver her feelings through words. Parents’ roles and background in the interview transcripts have also been one reason why AA got worse in speaking. However, the language subject result in the AA report book was not poor. The teacher had an alternative language learning to motivate The child to perform her best. Parent support is needed more as AA is under teacher supervision to learn in a higher class.

Abstract

The issue regarding female gender roles has been circulating for so many years in many cultures. The issue can be seen in many media including a novel where it brings up the matter along the plot in the story. This article aims to see women empowerment in comparison to the female gender roles represented in Crazy Rich Asians novel by Kevin Kwan. To support this research, the theory used is Eagly’s Gender Role theory and Malhotra’s Women empowerment theory. The method used in this study is a descriptive qualitative method to elaborate on the female gender roles and women empowerment. The results showed that this novel portrays that the female gender roles and stereotypes came from the residual culture and the women empowerment happened when the female characters can choose their own life path for their own sake by their own decisions. It shows that despite the culture that bonds the female characters for generations, they can still speak up for themselves and choose what is good for them.

Abstract

Due to their important role of a skilled and productive workforce for the nation's economy and progress, vocational high school graduates need special attention and efforts to improve their quality, including the English communication skill to support the mastery of their area of expertise. Their English mastery is greatly influenced by their mastery of vocabulary. So, developing mastery of English vocabulary needs to be done with various efforts, including utilizing information technology services in the form of mobile phone-based learning materials. In line with this, this research was aimed at conducting needs analysis on developing such materials.  The data were collected by using three questionnaires distributed to 76 students of Mechanical Engineering of vocational high schools, 13 English teachers from 6 vocational high schools, and 7 respondents who were vocational high school graduates in five districts/cities in Special Region of Yogyakarta. The research employed the quantitative (descriptive statistics) and qualitative data analysis (interactive analysis techniques). The results of data analysis, which included the list of required vocabulary, forms of activities, and other aspects that reflected the ways how the materials were presented, were then used as a basis for preparing the syllabus, grid, and initial draft of teaching materials.The data also included the types of services offered by the mobile-phone learning.

Abstract

TBLT represents an approach to language learning that prioritizes meaning but does not neglect form. It emphasizes the importance of engaging students' natural abilities to acquire language incidentally as they engage with language as a meaning-making tool. This study attempts to explore the effects of TBLI on Shambu Secondary School students' speaking self-efficacy beliefs in speaking skills performances during the intervention training if improve or not the students’ speaking self efficacy beliefs. To this end, two intact classes were selected in Shambu Secondary School using mixed method research. The treatment group went through twelve week teaching program, whereas the comparison group received the usual conventional instruction. The data were gathered from speaking self efficacy questionnaires and analyzed by using ANCOVA and content analysis was used to analyze the interview data. The results of the quantitative analysis revealed that TBLI increased the students’ English speaking self efficacy beliefs in the areas of their speaking performances. Moreover, the findings of the interview disclosed several themes about the merits of TBLI on students’ self-efficacy in speaking skills performance showing positive responses from the treatment groups. At the end, a range of implications is suggested for the different stakeholders.

Abstract

This research investigates the patterns of language use and maintenance of communities in Wakasihu State, Central Maluku, and highlights various factors that influence language maintenance. This research seeks to reveal the complexity of maintaining the use of regional languages in  Wakasihu State by looking at social variables such as age, gender, education and employment on language maintenance patterns. By using a quantitative descriptive approach enriched with mixed methods, this study combines the depth of qualitative insight with the breadth of quantitative data. Qualitative techniques, including observation, note-taking and interviews, provide a complex picture of the linguistic landscape of the Wakasihu community. To complement this, quantitative data was collected through a random questionnaire distributed to 50 communities. This questionnaire investigated the use of regional languages, their users, and how they are maintained. The findings of this study explain the dynamics of the use of interesting language in Wakasihu Country. Age is an important factor, the older generation shows a higher level of language retention. In contrast, the younger generation shows a lower level of retention of their local language. This generational shift signifies a change in the linguistic landscape in society. This study underscores the complex relationship between social dynamics, attitudes, and patterns of language use, offering a comprehensive understanding of how these factors influence language preservation and vitality. As the linguistic landscape develops, cultivating positive attitudes and awareness among the younger generation is essential for the survival of the Hitu dialect of the Wakasihu language. Moreover, the results of this research have implications not only for the Wakasihu community but also for similar linguistic contexts around the world, and constitute a strong call for proactive steps to safeguard our linguistic heritage.
