Abstract

The relationship between tree height and diameter is a key indicator for understanding growth patterns and the physiological balance of forest trees. In tropical agroforestry systems, this relationship is commonly used to estimate tree height, volume, and biomass without direct field measurements. This study was conducted on a seven-year-old Palaquium obtusifolium (Nantu) stand in Pandiri Village, Poso District, Central Sulawesi Province, to identify the pattern of the relationship between stem diameter and total height. Measurements were taken from 64 trees, which were measured with a Suunto clinometer and a phi tape. Data normality was tested using the Shapiro–Wilk test, and potential outliers were identified through boxplot analysis. The relationship between height and diameter was analyzed using a simple linear regression model in R Studio. The results showed a significant linear relationship between diameter and height, expressed by the equation H = 4,82 + 0,48D, with a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0,69. This indicates that approximately 69% of the variation in tree height could be explained by stem diameter. The regression model was statistically significant (p < 0,05) and could be effectively applied to estimate tree height in the field. Keywords:

Abstract

Hasanuddin University Educational Forest is a habitat for eagles on the island of Sulawesi, with shrubland areas spanning 86.01 hectares utilized by these birds as their roaming territory. This study aims to identify potential prey for eagles within the shrubland areas of the Hasanuddin University Educational Forest. The research was conducted over a two-month period, from August to September 2024. Data were analyzed using both quantitative and descriptive approaches. Quantitative analysis was employed to calculate population density, species occurrence frequency, ecological indices of prey species, and the activity of prey species at the time of discovery. Descriptive analysis was utilized to interpret the vegetation conditions in the observation area. The study was conducted at three shrubland points dominated by the species Chromolaena odorata, Lantana camara, Leea indica, Melastoma malabathricum, and Stachytarpheta jamaicensis. Eleven potential prey species for eagles were identified, categorized into three groups: birds (45%), reptiles (45%), and mammals (10%). Coturnix ypsilophora (bird group) and Eutropis multifasciata (reptile group) exhibited the highest population densities and occurrence frequencies among the prey species. Rattus sp. was the sole prey species identified from the mammal group. Ecological index analysis indicated that the diversity, richness, and evenness of eagle prey types in the shrubland area were moderate. The dominant activities of prey species when observed were perching (bird group) and traversing (reptile group). The findings of this study suggest that the primary potential prey species for eagles in the shrubland area are Coturnix ypsilophora, Eutropis multifasciata, and Rattus sp.

Abstract

Collection of stand parameter data has often not carried out thoroughly, including ignoring tree height measurements. Tree height has an important role to understand stand structure but it is difficult to do because of inadequate field conditions, limited availability of tools and methods as well as the skills of the individuals who measure them. The Purpose of this study was to build a model for estimating jati (Tectona gandis) height in community forests of Batupanga Daala Village, Luyo District, Polewali Mandar Regency, West Sulawesi Province. This research was conducted from January to May 2023. Data collection was carried out by measuring 70 trees in which 10 trees were obtained for each diameter class. The development of the high estimator model used five regression equations including those derived logarithmically and exponentially to estimate the dependent variable. The selection of the best model is based on four indicators, namely the coefficient of determination (R2), bias, error index, and Mean Square Error Prediction (MSEP). The results showed that the model with the highest score for estimating teak height in the Batupanga Daala Village community forest was Ŷ = 0.274X0.878 with an R² value of 0.881, bias = 0.845, error index = 77.39 and MSEP = 2.06. where Y is the estimated height and X is the diameter (DBH).

Abstract

Oryctes rhinoceros is a major pest of oil palm plantations, frequently causing serious physical damage, such as holes in stems and fronds, which can inhibit plant growth and development. The presence of this pest, especially on young plants, can reduce productivity and potentially cause significant economic losses for plantation companies.This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of two Oryctes rhinoceros pest control methods, namely the Pheromonas method and the Light Trap method, applied in oil palm plantations. The evaluation was based on the number of pest captures obtained during a 28-day observation period. The results showed that the Pheromonas method was considered effective because the number of pest captures exceeded the control threshold, which was more than 20 individuals per hectare per month. Conversely, the Light Trap method did not show optimal results, as the number of captures remained below this threshold. This indicates that Pheromonas is more effective at attracting and capturing pests than Light Traps under the environmental conditions of this study.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the marketing strategies and marketing effectiveness of fresh palm fruit (FFB) grown by independent smallholder farmers in Sarolangun Regency's Mandiangin area. The study location was chosen because Mandiangin's palm FFB distribution method involves multiple different marketing channels. The research involved 45 purposively selected respondents, with data collected through questionnaires distributed to independent farmers as well as related marketing institutions. The analysis was carried out by applying several indicators, including technical and economic efficiency indices, marketing costs, marketing margins, farmers’ share, and overall marketing efficiency. The findings show that there are four marketing channels for palm FFB in the study area, which involve collection points (RAM) and middlemen (toke). Among the four channels, Channel IV shows the highest level of economic efficiency, characterized by a marketing margin of IDR 0/kg, a farmer’s share of 100%, and an economic efficiency index of 4.55 IDR/kg. In contrast, Channel III demonstrates the highest technical efficiency, with a technical efficiency value of 14,29 IDR/kg/km. Furthermore, the MANOVA results reveal statistically significant differences in marketing efficiency across the four channels when assessed based on both technical and economic efficiency indicators.

Abstract

The adhesive industry still relies on petroleum-based synthetic adhesives, necessitating the development of more sustainable alternatives. This study explored the use of tannin extracted from mahogany (Acacia sp.) bark as the basis for a Tannin Resorcinol Formaldehyde (TRF) adhesive a bio-based formulation that has received limited attention as a binder for particleboard applications. Glycerin was incorporated as an extender at concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 15% to improve bonding performance. Adhesive properties were evaluated according to SNI 06-0121-1987, while physical and mechanical properties of particleboards (21 cm × 21 cm × 1 cm) were tested according to SNI 03-2105-2006. Adhesive viscosity ranged from 4.42 to 4.46 cP, which did not meet SNI requirements. Among all treatments, the 15% glycerin concentration yielded the best overall performance, producing the highest density (0,83 g/cm³), MOR (85,79 kgf/cm²), and internal bond (2,24 kgf/cm²), all of which met SNI 03-2105-2006. However, thickness swelling (14.66–16.29%) and MOE values across all treatments failed to meet the standard, indicating that glycerin alone is insufficient to ensure dimensional stability and board stiffness. These findings suggest that while 15% glycerin is the optimal concentration in this formulation, further optimization (such as increasing tannin solid content or combining glycerin with hydrophobic extenders) is needed to produce particleboard that comprehensively meets SNI requirements.

Abstract

Broiler chicken manure is widely utilized as an organic amendment to improve soil fertility and support sustainable agriculture. Its physicochemical characteristics may vary depending on housing management systems and bedding materials used during production. This study aimed to compare the physicochemical characteristics of broiler chicken manure obtained from three different management systems in Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The analyzed samples consisted of Km 16 (rice husk litter, closed-house system), MK (pure manure without litter, open-house system), and MH (sawdust litter, open-house system). Laboratory analyses were conducted to determine pH, moisture content, organic C, total N, and C/N ratio. The results showed variations among samples, with pH ranging from 7.72–7.98, moisture content from 19.70–20.71%, organic C from 23.01–31.09%, total N from 1.707–2.237%, and C/N ratio from 11.118–18.210. The Km 16 sample tended to have higher organic C content, while the MK sample showed relatively higher nitrogen content. All samples exhibited C/N ratios below 20, indicating relatively mature organic fertilizer suitable for agricultural application. These findings suggest that litter materials and housing management systems may contribute to differences in manure characteristics and their potential utilization for sustainable agriculture and post-mining land rehabilitation.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the characteristics of independent oil palm farmers, analyze the internal and external factors affecting their farming activities, and evaluate their effects on oil palm productivity, both directly and indirectly through the use of production inputs, in Mandiangin District, Sarolangun Regency. The study area was selected because it is one of the major smallholder oil palm production centers in the regency. Primary data were collected from independent oil palm farmers using structured questionnaires and analyzed using the Partial Least Squares (PLS) approach with SmartPLS and Microsoft Excel.The results show that independent oil palm plantations are still managed using conventional farming practices, while the use of production inputs has not fully complied with recommended standards, resulting in suboptimal plantation management. Farmers are generally of productive age, have primary to secondary education, moderate farming experience, and moderate levels of knowledge, motivation, and family dependency. External conditions indicate that marketing is still dominated by local collectors (toke), access to collection points is relatively easy, fertilizer availability is high, while fresh fruit bunch (FFB) prices remain relatively low. The structural model indicates that both internal and external factors have a positive and significant effect on oil palm productivity. Furthermore, internal factors have a positive and significant indirect effect through the moderating variable of production input use, whereas external factors have a positive but statistically insignificant indirect effect through the same variable.

Abstract

Sago is one of the strategic local food commodities in Indonesia that has great potential in supporting food diversification, especially in Merauke Regency. This study aims to find out the trading system of sago management in Merauke Regency. The method used in this study is a descriptive method with qualitative and quantitative approaches. The qualitative approach is used to describe the sago trading system, the pattern of relationships between business actors, the production process, processing, distribution, and the institutional roles involved. The results of the study show that the sago management business system in Merauke Regency is still dominated by the traditional system with indigenous peoples as the main producers, while distribution and marketing are centered on the local market. Sago processing began to develop from traditional to semi-modern methods so as to increase the efficiency, quality, and selling value of products. Sago has great economic potential as a source of local food and industrial raw materials, but its development still faces technological constraints, market access, capital, unstable prices, and land conversion. Therefore, government support, technological innovation, and strengthening of MSMEs are needed so that sago can become a leading commodity that supports food security and the welfare of the people of Merauke

Abstract

Fertilization constitutes a crucial maintenance practice in enhancing the growth and productivity of oil palm plantations. The effectiveness of fertilization management is strongly affected by the implementation of the 5T principle, which includes the appropriate type, dosage, timing, application method, and placement. This research was conducted to identify the implementation of the 5T principle in fertilization activities for mature oil palm plants (TM) and to assess its conformity with the company’s Annual Work Plan (RKT) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach using a case study method at Afdeling II Feliza Estate of PT Cahaya Anugerah Plantation. Research data were collected through direct field observations, interviews with fertilization foremen and workers, as well as documentation review consisting of SOPs, RKTs, and Foreman Workbooks (BKM). The sampling technique was carried out purposively in four plantation blocks, namely I002, I012, 1013, and K015. Data analysis involved several stages, including data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that the implementation of the 5T principle in fertilization activities had generally followed the company’s operational procedures. The indicators related to appropriate dosage, timing, and placement were implemented according to the established standards. However, discrepancies were still identified in the appropriate type and application method, particularly in terraced areas where the pocket method was recommended, yet the broadcasting system continued to be practiced.
