Abstract

Chili pepper is a strategic horticultural commodity with high vulnerability to food loss throughout its supply chain. This study aimed to assess the level of food loss mitigation implementation at five critical supply chain points and to analyze its effect on food loss levels among chili farmers in Umbulmartani Village, Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta. A quantitative descriptive method with multiple linear regression analysis was employed. Sixty farmers were selected through proportional random sampling from 15 farmer groups. Data were collected through structured interviews using a Likert scale 1–4 questionnaire. Mitigation implementation at harvesting (75.83%), sorting and cleaning (82.22%), packaging and transportation (79.17%), and storage (76.95%) fell in the high category, while loading-unloading (52.50%) was in the medium category. The average food loss reached 18.07% or 31 kg per farmer. All five mitigation variables simultaneously and significantly affected food loss (F = 5.329; sig. = 0.000; R² = 0.330). Partially, harvesting technique positively influenced food loss (B = 4.567; sig. = 0.000), while sorting and cleaning negatively affected it (B = −1.919; sig. = 0.031). It is concluded that strengthening GAP-based harvest techniques and improving GHP-based sorting practices through targeted extension programs are the most effective interventions to reduce chili food loss at the farmer level.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Chili pepper (Capsicum frutescens L.) is a commodity with numerous benefits and high economic value. One of the major pests causing yield losses in chili pepper cultivation is the fruit fly (Bactrocera spp.). Its control can be achieved through an integrated pest management approach utilizing traps, pheromones, and insecticides. This study aimed to determine the effect of two types of traps and the insecticide profenofos on the intensity of fruit fly (Bactrocera spp.) infestation in chili pepper plants. The study employed a randomized block design (RBD) consisting of four treatments: control (A0), yellow traps (A1), petrogenol-based traps (A2), and the chemical insecticide profenofos (A3). The observed variables included fruit fly infestation intensity, number of fruits, and fruit weight. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by an Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) test at a 95% confidence level. Petrogenol-based traps were effective in controlling fruit fly (Bactrocera spp.) infestation in chili pepper (C. frutescens L.) plants, with an infestation intensity of 1,83%, producing up to 162,80 fruits and a fruit weight of 34,34 g.

Abstract

The sugarcane marketing system plays an important role in improving farmers' welfare and ensuring the sustainability of sugar production in Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the effect of sugarcane prices received by farmers, marketing costs, and partnerships with sugar factories on the effectiveness of the sugarcane marketing system in Ponggok District, Blitar Regency. This research used a quantitative method with a survey approach. Data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 66 sugarcane farmers. The data analysis technique used multiple linear regression analysis with validity, reliability, and classical assumption tests including normality, multicollinearity, and heteroscedasticity tests. The results showed that the sugarcane price variable had a positive and significant effect on the effectiveness of the marketing system, the marketing cost variable had a positive but insignificant effect, and the partnership variable had a positive and significant effect. Simultaneously, all independent variables significantly affected the effectiveness of the sugarcane marketing system. The coefficient of determination value of 52.06% indicated that the effectiveness of the sugarcane marketing system could be explained by the variables studied, while the rest was influenced by other factors outside the model.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze insect diversity and community structure in rice plants across three ecosystem types: rice fields bordering forests, swamps, and settlements. The study was conducted from April to July 2025 in Tanah Miring District, Merauke Regency, South Papua Province. At each location, five observation plots measuring 5 × 5 m² were established. Sampling was carried out using the sweep net method during the vegetative and generative growth stages of rice. Data were analyzed using the Shannon–Wiener diversity index (H’), evenness index (E), and dominance index (C). The results showed that insect communities were dominated by pest groups across all ecosystem types. Rice fields bordering forests exhibited the highest insect abundance and natural enemy populations, while swamp-adjacent ecosystems showed lower abundance but more even distribution of individuals, indicating relatively stable community conditions. In contrast, ecosystems bordering settlements were strongly dominated by pests, particularly the family Cicadellidae, reflecting ecological imbalance due to environmental pressure, agricultural intensification, and pesticide use. The diversity index was moderate (H’ = 1.98–2.41), evenness was high (E = 0.73–0.91), and dominance was low to moderate (C = 0.14–0.24), indicating relatively stable community conditions.Varietal differences revealed that Cigelis and Agritan tended to have higher pest populations, whereas Inpari 32 and Inpari 42 exhibited a more balanced community structure. Landscape factors play a crucial role in shaping insect communities; therefore, ecologically based integrated pest management is essential to maintain the sustainability of rice agroecosystems.

Abstract

Caisim is one of the vegetable crops whose consumption continues to increase along with population growth, especially in urban areas such as West Java. The fulfillment of vegetable demand in urban areas still heavily depends on agricultural production from rural regions. This condition is caused by land conversion in urban areas, which results in decreasing agricultural land availability. Therefore, cultivation methods that can overcome limited land availability are needed, one of which is the hydroponic system, which is currently developing rapidly within the community. However, hydroponic systems are still constrained by relatively high production costs, making substitution with Liquid Organic Fertilizer (LOF) necessary. This study aimed to determine the best LOF substitution. The study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with one factor consisting of four treatments (100% AB mix, 70% AB mix + 30% LOF, 50% AB mix + 50% LOF, and 100% LOF), each with three replications, resulting in 12 experimental units. The results showed that the LOF substitution treatment that was not significantly different from the AB mix control was the 30% LOF treatment for all observation variables. However, no LOF substitution treatment was found to be significantly better than the AB mix control.

Abstract

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is the main food crop in Indonesia, and increasing its productivity is very important. The productivity of rice plants is strongly influenced by root system development, which is affected by soil physical and chemical properties, especially under low-fertility dryland conditions. The agricultural land in Bentenu Hamlet, Banyu Urip Village, West Lombok Regency is classified as dryland with low soil fertility characterized by low organic carbon and total nitrogen contents as well as slightly acidic soil pH. This study aimed to determine the effect of cattle manure application on root morphology and nitrogen uptake of M70D rice plants. The research was conducted from June to September 2025 using a Randomized Block Design (RBD) with four treatments, namely P0 (0 ton ha⁻¹), P1 (2.5 ton ha⁻¹), P2 (5.0 ton ha⁻¹), and P3 (7.5 ton ha⁻¹) of cattle manure, with four replications. The observed parameters included root morphology and nitrogen uptake. Data were analyzed using ANOVA followed by the Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) test at the 5% level. The results showed that cattle manure application significantly affected root morphology and nitrogen uptake of rice plants. Treatment P3 produced the best results with the highest total root length (298.3 cm), root length density (1.23 cm cm⁻³), root volume (4.9 ml), root dry weight (0.80 g clump⁻¹), and nitrogen uptake (13.65 mg clump⁻¹). The application of cattle manure improved soil conditions and supported better root development and nitrogen absorption. Therefore, cattle manure at a dose of 7.5 ton ha⁻¹ has the potential to improve root morphology and nitrogen uptake of M70D rice grown on dryland.

Abstract

The increasing volume of waste alongside the expansion of residential areas surrounding landfill sites has become a growing environmental and public health concern. This study aims to analyze community perceptions and the factors influencing public acceptance of the operational continuity of Bekotok Landfil, located in Loa Ipuh Village, Tenggarong District, Kutai Kartanegara Regency. A quantitative descriptive-explanatory approach was employed, involving 70 respondents compirising 61 community members, 3 academics, and 6 local goverment officials, selected through purposivee sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, field observation, and documentation, then analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and Chi-square test. Results indicate that the majority of respondents (57.4%) reported being disturbed by TPA operations, with odor nuisance and reduced environmental comfort as the primary complaints (88.5%). Despite these negative perceptions, 91.8% of respondents supported the continued operation of the Bekotok Landfill, reflecting a pattern of utilitarian acceptance. Length of residence showed a moderate positive correlation with odor disturbance (r = 0.465), while education level was significantly associated with operational support (p = 0.0048). Community expectations centered on odor reduction (88.5%), improved recycling systems (85.2%, and better waste management practices (82%). These findings suggest that the sustainability of Bekotok Landfill depends not only on technical improvement but also on strengthened public communication and environmental management quality.
