Abstract

This study has the objective to analyze the conflict which is being faced by the main characters and also analyzing how the conflicts construct the plot of the movie Venom: Let There Be Carnage. The Movie Venom: Let There Be Carnage as the data source would be analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method. In analyzing the data, two theories related to the topic had been taken namely theory of conflict proposed by Kenney (1966) used to analyze the conflict faced by the main characters and theory of plot proposed by Killman (1977) used to analyze how the conflicts constructed the plot. After doing the analysis, there were 12 conflicts found in the movie, which were categorized by each type. There were 2 conflicts categorized as internal conflict and 10 conflicts categorized as external conflict. All the conflicts faced by the main characters in the movie Venom: Let There Be Carnage were also proven construct the plot of the movie. All the conflict played each role according to part of the plot where the conflict happened. The relation among the conflict as brought the plot until it reached the climax and end in the resolution of the movie. Keyword- Conflict, Plot, Character, Movie, Movie Venom: Let There Be Carnage

Abstract

Speech acts refer to the action performed by produced utterances. Speech acts are found not only in everyday life but can also be found in a movie or novel, but this study discussed about speech acts in a movie. People can perform an action by saying something. The directive speech act is used when the speaker wants the hearer to do something for him or her. The directive speech acts consist of activities such as requesting, commanding, questioning, order and suggesting. This research aimed at finding the function of directive speech act in Ella Enchanted movie. The method used in this research was the descriptive qualitative method to describe the data in words and sentences containing directive speech acts. The data were collected from Ella Enchanted movie. The steps of data collection were watching and reading the movie script, then identifying, classifying and describing the data qualitatively. The data was taken from the movie script. The theory proposed by Searle (1969) and Austin (1962) was used to identify the types of directive speech act that was relevance in this movie. The data were classified into four directive speech act functions; they were 33 data categorized in Commanding, 6 data categorized in Asking, 16 data categorized in Requesting, and 12 data categorized in Ordering.

Abstract

The aims of this study are to find out the types of directive act and its function that is found in American Disney movie entitled Cruella which released in 2021. The study conducted with observation method and analyzed using quantitative and qualitative methods. The researcher collect the data through several steps, such as watching the movie several times, taking note the utterance indicated as directive act and classifying the utterance into the types of directive. The theory proposed by Searle (1979) was applied in order to analyze the data. Therefore, the result of this study found there are 51 utterances consider as directive act. The data divided into five types including ask (16), suggest (10), forbid (7), order (9) and request (3). From the total data, asking become the most frequencies found in the movie since the character frequently used the question to get the hearer give an answer or the information. It followed by the occurrence of suggest on the second rank of total data found. The speaker produces the type of suggestion in order to suggest the hearer in doing an action.

Abstract

Abstract— This article aimed to analyse the figurative language used in the Bible Old Testament. The objectives of this research are to find out types of figurative language and the meanings in the Bible Old Testament. To analyse the data, the author uses the main theory proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963) entitled Interpreting Literature and the theory of meaning proposed by Leech (1981) entitled Semantics. This article analysed the data by using a qualitative method. The data were collected by reading the Bible, taking note and classifying the sentences that contain figurative language. The data was taken from the Bible Old Testament. The types of figurative language found in Bible Old Testament were simile (3 items or 37,5%), metaphor (1 item or 12,5%), personification (1 item or 12,5%), paradox (1 item or 12,5%), and hyperbole (2 items or 25%). Simile is the dominant type and there are 3 types with the least result found in the Bible Old Testament namely metaphor, personification, and paradox. Abstract

One of human communication tools is language. Language can be divided into two types, formal and informal language. Taboo words are included in informal language, since taboo words cannot be spoken in all situations or places. Taboo words have their own functions when spoken and used by several people. The aim of this study is to find out the functions of taboo words that are used in “Ready or Not” movie. This study used theory from Wardhaugh (2006: 239) to find out the functions of taboo words. The method being used in this study is a descriptive qualitative method and observation technique to collect the data. In general, it is found three out of four functions of taboo words, those are to show contempt, to draw attention to oneself, and to be provocative.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to examine the verbal and visual signs found in the Samsung Galaxy S22 x BTS advertisement. The data from this study was downloaded through the official Samsung Indonesia Instagram post. The method for identifying and analyzing verbal and visual signs in advertising is based on Saussure theory (1959) which are signified and signifier. Barthes theory (1983) was utilized to analyze the meaning of verbal and visual signs and it was supported by Wierzbicka’s theory (1998) about analyzing about the meaning of colors. This analysis was conducted using a qualitative research method. The result of this research reveals all of the hidden meanings in Samsung advertisement collaborated with BTS. The signs of this study consist of the brand name, type of smartphone, and additional information about the features in the smartphone as well as the icon, color, and pose of the model in the advertisement.

Abstract

Examining the illocutionary acts present in a movie dialogue can offer a valuable understanding of the tactics of communication employed by the characters and the underlying significance of their expressions. This study analyses speech act, especially illocutionary acts. This study collect data from a film entitled Kissing Booth 3 and focused on types of illocutionary act from the main character's utterances named Elle Evans. To analyze the data for this study, a qualitative descriptive methodology was employed. The researcher of this study used Searle's (1979) theory to categorize various illocutionary acts. There were 92 pieces of data discovered that had various types of illocutionary act including assertives, directives, commissives, expressives, and declaratives.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyse the type oflanguage functions communicated in KFCadvertisements video, as well as the sentence types used to convey those language functions. A descriptive qualitative method was performed on the data todescribe the language functions and sentence types. The study also used of a quantitative method to highlight and illustrate the occurrences of language function types and sentence types. The data was collected through observation method. This investigation used two theories to achieve its objectives. Theory by Jakobson (1980) used to analysed the types of language function, contrasted with the theory by Quirk and Greenbaum's (1990) which was used to analysis of the sentence types employed to present those language functions. As the result, the KFCadvertisements video had 31 utterances contained language functions in KFC advertisements video. There were referential functions, emotive functions, conative functions, phatic functions, metalingual functions, and poetic functions.

Abstract

The article embarks on an in-depth exploration of the diverse directive illocutionary acts depicted in the 2021 film "The Guilty." Its primary aim lies in meticulously analyzing and categorizing the instances of directive illocutionary acts portrayed by the characters throughout the movie, drawing data from their dialogues and interactions. Guided by the theoretical framework of Searle and Vanderveken, the research employs a qualitative descriptive methodology to dissect the nuances of each directive illocutionary act, revealing four distinct types prevalent in the film: commands, requests, advice, and asks. With a total of 44 instances identified, including 25 commands, 12 requests, 4 instances of advice, and 3 asks, this thorough examination not only sheds light on the prevalence of directive illocutionary acts within "The Guilty" but also underscores their significance in shaping interpersonal dynamics and propelling the narrative forward.

Abstract

This research focuses on analysing deixis contained in Pamungkas' song Please Baby Please. Deixis is one of the essential things that humans do by speaking, known technically as "deixis" (from Greek). Through language, this means "pointing". Deixis is usually used to analyze conversations, speeches, song lyrics, movie scripts, etc. This research has two objectives; the first is to analyze the types of deixis contained in Pamungkas' song Please Baby Please and analyze the context of the situation contained in the song. Deixis determines who, to whom, and where a reference is made. Person deixis, spatial deixis, temporal deixis, social deixis, and discourse deixis are some deixis forms that refer to the theory of Cruse (2000). This research uses the qualitative method, where the qualitative method is used to describe the types of deixis found in Pamungkas' song. The total deixis data found in this study amounted to 14 data, of which the number of each primary data, where persona deixis amounted to five data (38.7%), then followed by temporal deixis as much as four data (28.5%), followed by spatial deixis as much as three data (21.4%), and social and discourse deixis showed the same result, namely one data (7.1%).
