Abstract

This study focus on the external conflict the minor character faces in “The Martian” movie. External conflict occurs between the character and something outside of himself. External conflict are divided into three: a conflict between a man, a conflict between man and society, and a conflict between man and nature. This study aims to find out what external conflict the minor character face in the movie faces and how they resolve the conflict. The data for this study were taken from the movie "The Martian" and the screenplay using note-taking techniques. The data was analyzed using qualitative research methods. The theory used is from Kenney (1966) and Rahim (2002). Based on the analysis, found man against man happens mostly in the movie. Furthermore, for handling conflict that the main character found mostly is dominating, from 5 types of conflict management: Integrating, obliging, dominating, avoiding, and compromising.

Abstract

In society, directive illocutionary is very important to establish good communication. Directive speech is used in giving commands, requests, and suggestions to make the hearer do something. This study entitled “Command Directive Illocutionary Performed in Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV Movie” It aims for finding out the command directive illocutionary acts and the context of situation of directive illocutionary acts utterance performed by the main characters and the secondary characters. This study also focusses on finding command illocutionary act that used imperative and declarative as their sentences. The command directive illocutionary acts are discussed using the theory of directive illocutionary acts proposed by Kreidler (1998: 189-190) and the context of situation is discussed using theory of the context of situation proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1985: 12). In collecting the data, the writer watched the movie and noted the utterances that contain command directive illocutionary acts in the movie script. The method used in analysing data was descriptive qualitative method. In presenting the findings, formal and informal methods are used. The formal method is used to show the percentage of sentence structure of command directive illocutionary acts using table and the informal method is used to explain the data descriptively through words. In this study, 21 data were found regarding illocutionary acts of directive command. The finding in the analysis also shows command uttarance that uttered by the characters in the film Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV used declarative sentences and imperative sentences in their uttarances.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the types of moral values and the context of the situation when conveyed the types of moral values expressed in the film “Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck It Ralph 2”. Moral values were discussed based on the theory of Moral Values proposed by Audi (2007) and the context situation based on the theory proposed by Halliday & Hasan (1985). In collecting the data, the first step was to watched the film and marked the utterances that contain moral values in each scene and film dialogue. The data analyzed was conducted by used qualitative method. Qualitative method was a type of social science research that collects and works with non-numerical data and that seeks to interpret meaning from these data that help us understand social life through the study of targeted populations or places. In analyzed the data, there were some steps in order to solved the problem of the study. First discussion there was an analyzed of moral values and then the second was an analyzed of the context of the situation such as field, tenor, and mode so that the data analyzed was more accurate. Next, nine types of moral values were discussed in the film “Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2. The study classified the data based on moral values and then analyzed the context of the situation. In terms of moral values, there were nine types of moral values expressed, namely Bravery 1, Self Confidence 3, Respect 3, Love and Affection 1, Kind and Friendly 2, Optimism 3, Never Give Up 2, Peace Ability 1 the total is 16 data including the meaning with the context of situation that consists of the field, tenor and mode. Meanwhile, the type of moral values of Strong Belief was not found in this film because in the context of Strong Belief, meant was one's relationship with God or religion. While in the movie "Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck It Ralph 2" told about how Character in a virtual video game or avatar game solves the problem and does not find any religious element at all. In the film "Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck It Ralph 2", the type the most dominant moral values ​​found are Self Confidence, Optimism, and Respect because, in this film, their mission was to succeed in improving the Vanellope game.

Abstract

songs as one of literary works often used figurative languange, such as personification. To gives a human attribute to things, animal or abtract object. The theory used is the theory of (Zhu, 1991) about Non-living personification and describe the meaning of the lyrics using the theory of meaning from (Leech, 1981)., The method used in this study is qualitative research, where the data is collected by observation and note taking methods. After analyzing the data, the writer concludes that in each of the selected songs, namely: Sucker of pain, Speed ​​me up, Medicated, Hope less romantic, there are some lyrics that contain Non Living personification based on personification theory by (Zhu, 1991), The result shows there 5 data for non-living personification in the lyrics. The sentences that contained this personification have conceptual, connotative, social and thematic meaning based on the theory of meaning by (Leech, 1981).

Abstract

Abstract— this research is entitled “Command Directive Illocutionary Act Discovered in Central Intelligence Movie by Rawson Marshall. This study aims to determine the directive illocutionary speech acts and the context of the situation in the directive illocutionary speech acts expressed by the characters in the film. The directive illocutionary acts are discussed using the theory of directive illocutionary acts proposed by Kreidler (1998: 189-190). The context of the situation is discussed using the situational context theory proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1985: 12). In collecting data, first, the writer watches the movie and marks the utterances that contain the illocutionary act of directive commands in the film script. The method used in analyzing the data is a qualitative descriptive method. The writer classifies the data based on the sentence structure of the directive illocutionary acts of commands and then analyses the context of the situation. In presenting the findings, formal and informal methods are used. The formal method is used to show the percentage of the sentence structure of directive illocutionary acts using tables, and the informal method is used to describe the data descriptively through words. In this study, 21 data were found regarding illocutionary acts of directive command.

Abstract

Abstract— In the current era of globalization, it is very easy to find the phenomenon of code switching. This phenomenon is used in various sectors. Code switching can be found in the education, technology and entertainment sectors. This study focuses on the entertainment sector and aims to determine the types of code switching, namely Tag Switching, Inter-sentential Switching and intra-sentential switching contained in one of Najwa Shihab's YouTube channels entitled Ngobrol bareng Niki: yang dirindukan dari Indonesia. This research confirmed by using observation method and descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the data. Researcher collect data in several steps. Namely, opening YouTube with the keywords Najwa Shihab next, looking for videos of Najwa Shihab with Niki Zefanya with the title Chat with Niki: yang dirindukan dari Indonesia. Watching the video repeatedly to identify, then take notes the utterances that contain code switching. The theory used in this study is the theory proposed by Poplack (1980). Total of the data in this research were 21. The most dominant type used in the video is inter-sentential switching with 10 (47,6%) data. Next is 6 (28,6%) data of intra-sentential switching, and the last, tag switching is as the lowest with only 5 (23,8%) data.

Abstract

This article was created with the aim of exploring the use of the figurative language in selected songs from Selena Gomez's album Rare and their meaning. There were three songs chosen, namely Cut You Off, Vulnerable, and A Sweeter Place. This study has two problems formulated in this research, namely: what kind of figurative language is found in Selena Gomez's album entitled Rare and what is the meaning of figurative language found in Selena Gomez's album entitled Rare. The theory to describe figurative language is from Abrams' theory (1999) while the meaning is from Leech's theory (1981). The author found three types of eight types of figurative language, namely 1 simile, 3 hyperbole, and 1 metaphor and found one type of meaning according to Leech (1981), namely connotative meaning

Abstract

This research was made to find out and examine the meaning of slang, the types of slang and the types of meaning contained in the film that is used as data, the film entitled The Last Rescue, this film tells the journey of a Private James Lewis and his friends surviving attacks and pursuit of the Nazis. This study uses qualitative methods to collect data from the formulation of the problem as much as possible so that it can be researched, describes and explains the problems found. In this data research is carried out by taking from the script, watching the film used as research and applying it to several stories used in the research. This research is similar to the theory of slang words proposed by Kipfer and Chapman (2007) with the title of the book "Dictionary of American Slang" which explains and classifies slang into two parts, namely primary slang and secondary slang and the theory of types of meaning proposed by Leech (1981). "Semantic the Study of Meaning" which explains and classifies into seven meanings, namely, conceptual meaning, connotative meaning, collocative meaning, social meaning, affective meaning, reflective meaning and thematic meaning, one of these seven meanings will be classified into a slang words in the data.

Abstract

This study analyzes the figurative language used in song lyrics of Michael Buble’s song lyrics. The song lyric was analyzed based on the theory proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963) to find out the types of figurative language in the song lyrics and the theory of meaning based on theory proposed by Leech (1981) to find out the meaning of each figurative language. The study aims to provide a better understanding of the figurative language types and the meaning of figurative language on Michael Buble’s song lyrics. This study used qualitative method to collect data. The types of figurative found in Michael Buble’s song consist of 11 types, they are simile, metaphor, personification synecdoche, metonymy, imagery, symbol, allusion, paradox, hyperbole, and irony. Meanwhile, the types of meanings of figurative language found were only 5 out of 7 types, they are conceptual meaning, connotative meaning, collocative meaning, affective meaning and thematic meaning

Abstract

This lesson is entitled "Analysis of Imagery and Meaning found in Elizabeth Alexandre's Poerty." This lesson focuses on each type of imagery contained in Elizabeth Alexandre's poetry. This study identifies imagery and meaning in this poem and the data is taken from the stanzas analyzed in Elizabeth Alexandre's poetry. The data of this study were analyzed using a qualitative descriptive method. The first step of the analysis is observing the collected data, then classifying the data based on the type of imagery that occurs in Elizabeth Alexander's poetry lyrics using the theory of Arp & Perrine (1991).
