Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of demographic factors (child mortality, age of first marriage, type of contraception) and non-demographic factors (economic factors represented by income; social factors consisting of mother’s education and work status; and cultural factors represented by ethnicity and religion) on fertility in Indonesia. By applying Ordinary Least Square (OLS) method, this study uses cross-sectional data from Indonesia Family Life Survey Wave 5 in 2014. OLS regression results show that demographic factors that influencing fertility in Indonesia are child mortality, age of first marriage, and type of contraception (IUD and tubectomy). Meanwhile, non-demographic factors that have an effect on fertility in Indonesia are income and mother’s education. Moreover, the significant effect of cultural factor on fertility in Indonesia is only shown partially among ethnic groups.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the patterns of family planning services during the pandemic and the providers' strategies in facing the new normal in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY). This research uses a mixed method with a sequential explanatory design. This study found that the pattern of family planning services in DIY experienced changes when the COVID-19 pandemic occurred. Changes occurred in contraceptive coverage, types of contraception, methods, counselling behaviour and distribution of respondents serving family planning. Several providers have also conducted counselling through online media to increase family planning in the new normal period. However, they have not been able to solve the problem of family planning acceptors. The new family planning service strategy must pay attention to health protocols to minimize the risk of being infected with COVID-19 and increase the coverage of family planning acceptors. Therefore, a strategy is needed to realize the commitment and creativity of providers to improve the quality of counselling services through online media and provide services following health protocols in the era of the new normal.

Abstract

Warung Tegal or warteg (a food stall with cheap food) is a local economic phenomenon that is rapidly growing in the Jakarta area, particularly for the lower middle-class society. This growth is due to the connection between warteg business and remittances sent to their hometowns. This paper aims to (i) explain the informal economy of warteg traders who provide economic opportunities for other migrants in Jakarta, (ii) describe the remittances economy of warteg traders to their families in their hometowns, and (iii) explain the economic contribution of remittances to the development of migrants' origin villages. This research uses a qualitative approach with case studies of warteg traders around Bangka IX, Pela Mampang, and Mampang Prapatan. Data were obtained by direct observation that was carried out from March 2016 to January 2017. The interviewees include five warteg traders who sell in the Pela Mampang region, as well as the children of the traders and village officials of Dukuhjati Kidul, Tegal. The results of the study show that warteg can increase the wealth of migrant families. Remittances serve as a form of social bonding and responsibility to their families. They are used for consumption and productive activities, such as building houses that are considered a symbol of success in running warteg.

Abstract

Reservation wage is the main variable in the job search model. Age effect based on the life course can also explains the differences in job search behavior. This study aims to understand the effect of reservation wage and age on job search duration. Using Indonesia’s Labor Force Survey, we first estimate the reservation wage of labour force aged 15-64 years with a Two-Step Heckman regression. The results show that reservation wage and age effect have an impact on job search duration. A per cent increase in reservation wages will extend job search duration by 0.97 months. The average reservation wage of the unemployed is higher than employed with a longer job search. The study found indications of discrimination against young job seekers (15-22). They are more likely to accept any work and vulnerable to receive indecent wages and hours. The higher their education and skills, the shorter their job search duration. The study also presumes a gap in agriculture, trade, and the construction industry and informal sector, indicated by high job turnover. The synergy among the workforce, firm, and government will support the utilization of Indonesia’s demographic dividend moment.

Abstract

This study aims to identify critical elements needed to enhance community participation in Smart City policies. Although several studies have discussed the role of citizens in smart cities, these studies focused only on one aspect, whether it was the societal aspect, government/municipality, or technology. In order to fill the gap in the literature, this study seeks to extract the important elements of citizen participation based on the three aspects as a whole by using the systematic literature review (SLR) method. The SLR method is useful for mapping comprehensively when information or knowledge about a particular topic is being developed with limited empirical evidence. A total of 103 articles published from 1999-2021 were analyzed as the unit of analysis for this study. There are 12 critical elements to encourage community participation, and all these elements should not be considered partially. This study argues that it is essential to synchronize each element to make substantive participation. By doing so, the community will have the opportunity to make a transformative impact on smart city development.

Abstract

Nowadays, Community-Based Organisation (CBO) has been admitted as a more successful activity to empower the community than other organisations, such as Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO). This article aims to emphasise how activism of the Forum of Indonesian Migrant Workers or the Forum Warga Buruh Migran (FWBM), as a CBO initiated by Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) at the grassroots level, works to empower ex-Indonesian migrant workers and their families in their areas of origin. This article used the qualitative methodology of the CBO framework and the perspective of community empowerment with a case study in Cilacap Regency, Central Java. Primary data was collected by in-depth interviews and focus group discussions, while secondary data was collected by literature review. The data was processed using content analysis techniques. This research found that the activism of  FWBM has been manifested in four holistic community empowerment programmes. Through these programmes, ex Indonesian Migrant Workers and their families can improve their quality of life. They can be more empowered, economically independent, and wealthier. However, the FWBM still has limitations in terms of volunteers and financial resources to support sustainable activities.

Abstract

State border areas are often considered rigid and isolated spaces, and this assumption is usually not in accordance with reality on the ground. Communities in border regions of Indonesia have kinship ties across countries, such as life across borders that occur in the upper Sembakung River. The river flows in the border area of North Kalimantan and upstream in Sabah, Malaysia. The problem occurs when to conduct social interaction, the population in the border area must conduct various negotiations on the rules of the spatial state. The natural morphology of the Sembakung River crossing connects the ethnic interactions of the population at the country's borderline, which is often assumed to threaten sovereignty. The concentration of state territory space, a legacy of colonial cartography, is not in line with the social boundaries of the population formed by the natural morphology of the Sembakung River channel, which provides space for residents to penetrate state boundaries. This paper explores cross-border interactions through the flow of the Sembakung River, which is strengthened by life cycle rites through the Mauss gift scheme, which is prone to creating marginalization of women. Cross-border social ties have penetrated rigid territorial boundaries. This situation resulted in the infiltration of economic commodities mobility intertwined with people's cultural activities in hulu Sembakung, a group of population with dual citizenship, and the practice of rites of exchange that are vulnerable to women's marginalization.

Abstract

Agriculture-based policies for rural development and food sufficiency lead to the welfare of farmers. However, the implementation of these policies often cannot address these issues. This study examines the impact of implementing agropolitan area and Sustainable Food Agricultural Land (LP2B) policies on paddy field farmers in the Ciwidey Agricultural Area. A review of the literature on regulations related to these two policies was conducted to identify their application in the Ciwidey area. Furthermore, a phenomenological qualitative approach was carried out to observe rice field farmers as the object of these policies. Agropolitan policies can create capital flows in agricultural areas that open opportunities to diverse farmers' livelihood portfolios. This capital inflow would be followed by activities of primitive accumulation that changed paddy field land tenure. In a strategic location, this change will increase the risk of the paddy field's conversion to non-agriculture. The LP2B policy is used to control this transfer of function. Unfortunately, the policy puts farmers with small land at risk of being in the survival strategy because their livelihood portfolio is limited. Their cultivated rice fields have less economic value compared to horticultural commodities. Although the LP2B policy can generally control land use conversion, paddy field farmers retain their identity. The primitive accumulation that follows the capital inflow due to agropolitan policy raises the risk of LP2B farmers become vulnerable in land ownership, changed from land owners to agricultural laborers. In general, this impact keeps the welfare of farmers below expectations.
