Abstract

The fertility dynamics are related to the direction of population policies and socio-economic conditions of the community. From the 1970s to 1990, Soeharto had succeeded in reducing fertility rates. Unfortunately, population control had weakened in 2000 when the government adopted regional autonomy. Consequently, population control was no longer a priority due to the merger of institutions with the full authority of population and family planning. In addition, improving the socio-economic conditions of society poses challenges to population control efforts. This paper aims to analyze fertility and contraceptive prevalence rate trend in Indonesia based on the 2017 Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey data. The data were analyzed using inferential statistics. The results indicate socio-economic conditions affect people’s mindset in deciding the use of contraception and pregnancy. People are aware of birth control but tend not to use modern contraception and move to traditional contraception. The socio-economic improvement of women, which causes negative child value, is sufficiently a sufficient condition to maintain or reduce fertility. Other factors such as improvement of maternal education, maternal participation in work, and increased family welfare that is important to keep fertility at a low level.

Abstract

Good quality of life is an essential aspect of human capital development. The impact of COVID-19 pandemic not only influenced critical economic sector, such as unemployment problem, but also affected fulfilment of basic needs, such as health, education, assets ownership that are indicators of quality of life in the community. The effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the quality of life in provinces in Indonesia may vary, given the different levels of spread of COVID-19 in each province. This study aims to create clustering based on the level of quality of life of provinces in Indonesia and review whether there were cluster changes among the cluster members due to the COVID-19 pandemic and whether the position of the cluster changed from the centroid position after the COVID-19 pandemic. The data used in this study are life expectancy, school expectancy, economic growth rate per capita, and percentage of homeownership in 2018-2020. The method used is K-Means using the Rapid Mining Studio tool. The results showed changes in the provincial clusters from the transition period to the period after the COVID-19 pandemic.health; education; economy; cluster; quality of life; COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract

Currently, the demographic dividend era is in progress, but improving the quality of competitive human resources is still a challenging process. Human capital investment needs to be implemented to make the older person healthier, independent, prosperous and dignified in the future to reach the second demographic dividend. This study provides an overview of the older person and province characteristics in the era of the demographic bonus. The data sources are the 2019 National Socio-Economic Survey (Susenas) and other official publications. The analysis was carried out descriptively on a provincial scale for individuals aged 60 years or over. The results showed a dependency ratio below 50 (namely demographic bonus), but several provinces still needed to decrease fertility and mortality. Based on the older person's current condition, most still have low access to income, education, health services, and communication technology. Various efforts need to be implemented in collaboration between the government and other stakeholders to enhance the better quality of the older person in the next future. It is necessary to provide people with job opportunities, knowledge, and health and financial security skills to prepare for old age.

Abstract

This study aims to determine factors influencing outpatient treatment of elderly population in East Java Province. The analysis used raw data of the 2017 National Socio-Economic Survey (Susenas) conducted by Statistics Indonesia. The unit of analysis is population aged 60 years and over, with a total sample of 6,511 persons. Multilevel binary logistic regression model was employed for the analysis. The results showed that nearly half (49.6%) of the unwell elderly population did not seek treatment. The reasons for this behaviour include they did not have enough money (especially in rural areas), chose to self-medicate, and felt no need for treatment. For the elderly who seek outpatient treatment, the most visited health facility is doctor or midwife practice. The results also show that factors affecting the behavior of elderly population in outpatient treatment are economic status, working status, activity disruption, and health insurance ownership.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of demographic factors (child mortality, age of first marriage, type of contraception) and non-demographic factors (economic factors represented by income; social factors consisting of mother’s education and work status; and cultural factors represented by ethnicity and religion) on fertility in Indonesia. By applying Ordinary Least Square (OLS) method, this study uses cross-sectional data from Indonesia Family Life Survey Wave 5 in 2014. OLS regression results show that demographic factors that influencing fertility in Indonesia are child mortality, age of first marriage, and type of contraception (IUD and tubectomy). Meanwhile, non-demographic factors that have an effect on fertility in Indonesia are income and mother’s education. Moreover, the significant effect of cultural factor on fertility in Indonesia is only shown partially among ethnic groups.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the patterns of family planning services during the pandemic and the providers' strategies in facing the new normal in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY). This research uses a mixed method with a sequential explanatory design. This study found that the pattern of family planning services in DIY experienced changes when the COVID-19 pandemic occurred. Changes occurred in contraceptive coverage, types of contraception, methods, counselling behaviour and distribution of respondents serving family planning. Several providers have also conducted counselling through online media to increase family planning in the new normal period. However, they have not been able to solve the problem of family planning acceptors. The new family planning service strategy must pay attention to health protocols to minimize the risk of being infected with COVID-19 and increase the coverage of family planning acceptors. Therefore, a strategy is needed to realize the commitment and creativity of providers to improve the quality of counselling services through online media and provide services following health protocols in the era of the new normal.

Abstract

Reservation wage is the main variable in the job search model. Age effect based on the life course can also explains the differences in job search behavior. This study aims to understand the effect of reservation wage and age on job search duration. Using Indonesia’s Labor Force Survey, we first estimate the reservation wage of labour force aged 15-64 years with a Two-Step Heckman regression. The results show that reservation wage and age effect have an impact on job search duration. A per cent increase in reservation wages will extend job search duration by 0.97 months. The average reservation wage of the unemployed is higher than employed with a longer job search. The study found indications of discrimination against young job seekers (15-22). They are more likely to accept any work and vulnerable to receive indecent wages and hours. The higher their education and skills, the shorter their job search duration. The study also presumes a gap in agriculture, trade, and the construction industry and informal sector, indicated by high job turnover. The synergy among the workforce, firm, and government will support the utilization of Indonesia’s demographic dividend moment.
